Observations on the performance of dry bean seeds under different storage conditions

The effects of several storage conditions on the longevity, vigor (accelerated aging), stand, and yield of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seeds were studied. High seed moisture (14.2%) and high storage temperature (30°C) were extremely damaging to the germination and vigor of the seeds which adversely affected field emergence and yield. The storage conditions of 6.7% seed moisture at 20°C storage temperature and 14.2% seed moisture at 30°C were respectively the better and the worse of the five storage conditions studied. The temperature effect was more pronounced on seeds with high moisture content. The germination and vigor of the harvested seed were not affected by the physiological quality of the planted seeds.
