Regional experiments with sugarcane varieties from 1970 to 1973

Two series of experiments with sugarcane varieties were conducted in the State Of São Paulo in the same areas where sugar and alcohol factories plant their own sugarcane. Twenty-five varieties were compared in a series of 10 experiments in partially bal-anced 5 x 5 lattices. Other 17 varieties were studied in a series of 6 experiments in randomized blocks. The objective was to choose the best varieties for cultivation, among some varieties that were already planted and some other obtained either from the breeding program of the Instituto Agronômico (Campinas) or recently introduced in the State. The experiments were planted in 1970 and three harvests were obtained: plant-cane, first ratoon and second ratoon. Results showed that the varieties NA56-79, IAC52-326, IAC57-259, CP51-22, IAC52-150 and IAC58-480 can be cultivated in the State of São Paulo, besides IAC51-205 and CB41-76. NA56-79 was superior to CB41-76 in sugar yield per area. The others did not differ from the controls IAC51-205, IAC50-134 and CB41-76. IAC52-150, NA56-79 and IAC58-480 showed higher sugar content. IAC58-480, CP51-22 and IAC52-326 showed the best ratooning.
