SUMMARY

This paper contains field observations on adults of Allocolaspis brunnea (Jacoby, 1900) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae), of the subfamily Eumolpinae, in the Campinas region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Observations were made on adult habits, seasonal occurrence, type of damage and plants used for food.

The adults of this species of leaf beetle spend the day hidden in the soil, near the main stem of the plant which they feed upon. At night they leave the soil and eat on petioles and young stems of the plant. Some petioles are cut by their feeding action and this results in a dry leaf which remains on the plant hanging from the cut petiole. They were never observed eating the leaves. The habits of the larvae are not known.

The adults occur only in November, December, January and February.

They are polyphagous and have been observed feeding in 9 different plant families. Plant species and families already observed being used for food by the adults are: okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) of the family Malvaceae; grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) of the family Vitaceae; soybean (Glycine mas (L.) Merrill) and cockscomb coral bean (Erythrina christa-galli L.) of the family Leguminosae, subfamily Papilionoideae; ramie (Boehmeria nivea Gaud.) of the family Urticaceae; Brazilian spiderflower (Tibouchina sp.) of the family Melastomataceae; jequitibá (Cariniana rubra Miers) of the family Lecythidaceae; silk-cotton tree (Ceiba erianthos K. Schum.) of the family Bombacaceae; Belangera tomentosa Cambess., of the family Saxifragaceae, and calabur tree (Muntingia calabura L.) of the family Tiliaceae.
