International Classification for Nursing Practice research and development center of the Nursing Graduate Program of the Universidade Federal da Paraíba

In 1989, during the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Quadrennial Congress, Seul, South Korea, the representative council of the several organizations members of the ICN approved a resolution for the development of an International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) system(1). This classification system would be used worldwide for practice (nursing actions/interventions) to address human needs (nursing diagnoses) and achieve specific results (nursing outcomes).

Since then, the ICNP® is in continuing development. In 2000, the ICNP®became an official program of professional practice area, which is one of the building blocks of the ICN. In 2003, the Research and Development Centers were created through the ICNP® program. The centers for ICNP® Research and Development vision would be consistent with the ICNP® as being an integral part of the global information structure informing health care practice and policy to improve health care worldwide(2).

Up to July, 2007, there were five ICN accredited ICNP® Research and Development Centers: The group of German language consisted by organization of Austria, Germany, and Sweden; the research center for nursing practice of Canberra Hospital and University of Canberra in Australia (inactivated recently); the center of the University of Concepción in Chile; the center of the school of nursing at the University of Wisconsin in the United States; and, the center of the school of nursing at the University of Minnesota in the United States.

Being involved with the study and utilization of the ICNP®in the graduate program and nursing practice, we from the Federal University of Paraíba submitted a proposal to create and receive ICN accreditation for an ICNP® Research and Development Center. In July 2007, our proposal was approved and the center was named "Centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento da CIPE® do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem da Universidade Federal da Paraíba (Centro CIPE® – PPGENF-UFPB) – ICNP® Research and Development Center of the Nursing Graduate Program of the Federal University of Paraiba (ICNP® Center – NURSGP-UFPB)". This center's mission is to support the continuing development of the ICNPâ, to promote the ICNP® in nursing practice, education, and research, and to collaborate with ICN accredited ICNP® Research and Development Centers in the refinement of the classification system to become the terminology to be used worldwide in enhancing professional goals in practice, education, and research. The main goal of the NURSGP-UFPB is to develop a database of nursing terminology, specific to our cultural background, and subsequently, to contribute to the ICNP® catalogues that apply to professional practice within specific environments and specific clienteles. In agreement with its main goal, the objectives of the NURSGP-UFPB consist of the development and validation of terms that reflect nursing practice in specialized clinical areas, primary care and public health, and contributing for the development of the ICNP® , suggesting new terminologies or adapting/refining terminologies or definition that exist in the classification system that reflect cultural relevance.

Internal partners include the "Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Fundamentação da Assistência de Enfermagem, do PPGENF-UFPB – The Group for the Study and Research in Foundations for Nursing Practice of the NURSGP-UFPB"; "Grupo de Sistematização da Assistência de Enfermagem do Hospital Universitário Lauro Wanderley-UFPB – The Group of the Nursing Process of the Lauro Wanderley University Hospital-UFPB"; "Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Administração e Informática em Saúde, do Centro de Ciências da Saúde-UFPB – The Group for the Study and Research in Health Administration and Informatics"; "corpo docente do Departamento de Enfermagem de Saúde Pública e Psiquiatria, e do Departamento de Enfermagem Médico-Cirúrgica e Administração, do Centro de Ciências da Saúde-UFPB – Faculty of the Public Health, Psychiatric, Medical-Surgical and Nursing Administration Departments of the Health Science Center - UFPB.". External partners include the "Grupo de Sistematização das Práticas de Enfermagem em Saúde Coletiva, da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Curitiba, Paraná – The Group of Nursing Process in Community Health of the Municiptal Distirct Health Department of Curitiba, Paraná", and the "Subcomissão de Sistematização da Prática de Enfermagem, vinculada à Comissão Permanente de Prática Profissional, Diretoria de Assuntos Profissionais, Associação Brasileira de Enfermagem – Sub-commission of Nursing Process of the Permanent Commission of Nursing Practice of the Directory for Professional Issues of the Brazilian Association of Nursing, created in 2008 in replacement of the Department of Classification of Nursing Diagnoses, Interventions, and Outcomes.

The ICNP® Center – NURSGP-UFPB is open to an individual and groups interested in participating and collaborating in the development of databases of classification of phenomena of nursing practice using the ICNP® and in the implementation of this classification as a technological instrument useful for nursing practice.
