Editorial note

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria has lost its Editor-in-Chief. We are in mourning.

Antonio Spina-França Netto transformed this journal into what it is today, through great dedication and effort, and he devoted to it the best of his time and talents. His partner and right hand in these endeavors, Marília Lange Spina-França, also departed from us little more than a year ago.

Over the last few years, Spina-França demanded increasing engagement in editorial tasks. Sensing that the journal needed to become more professional, he started to publish the journal in English, promoted migration to the SciELo online submission system and hired an additional secretary, a proofreader and a specialist company with experience in scientific and neurological advisory services, in order to improve the texts in English and standardize the style of the journal's articles.

With his approval, we created Area Supervisor positions, which are listed on the initial pages of the journal. These supervisors are individuals with great prominence in specific areas of neurology, who are chosen from among the most active participants in the task of assessing scientific studies through the peer review system who are able to make time available to carry out more of this voluntary activity. This is not a closed circle of collaborators; other colleagues can and will be called on to contribute, according to the needs.

One of the modifications introduced from the middle of 2009 onwards was to reduce the participation of Case Reports, which had reached the point of filling almost half of the journal's pages. Beginning in October 2010, we will move over to accepting submissions of Case Reports in a different format, in the Letters section, with publication envisaged from February 2011 onwards. The Letters section will receive succinct communications of interesting cases, with up to 500 words, up to five references and one table or figure; without summary in Portuguese, without abstract in English and without key words in either language.

It has also been necessary to reconstitute the membership of the Associação Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria Dr. Oswaldo Lange (the entity that publishes the journal), which will now have contributions from Luiz Alberto Bacheschi, Carlos Alberto Mantovani Guerreiro, José Píndaro Pereira Plese, Acary Souza Bulle Oliveira, the Editors of Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria and also two younger members, Maria Fernanda Mendes and Carlos Augusto Takeuchi, along with the administrator Adriana Spina-França Machado.

As one of Prof. Spina-França's last measures, he acquired a physical head office for the journal. This was a long-cherished dream that has become a reality thanks to the voluntary non-remunerated work of all of the constituents of the Associação Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria Dr. Oswaldo Lange since it came into existence. The new office is a commercial suite of 30 m2, which will house the journal's physical and juridical head office. It is in the same complex as the new permanent headquarters recently established by the Academia Brasileira de Neurologia (Brazilian Academy of Neurology). Its address is Rua Vergueiro 1421, sala 804, Edifício Top Tower, Torre Sul, CEP 04101-000, São Paulo.

We hereby make an appeal to everyone, and especially to the Editorial Board, to our advisors, to our authors who honor Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria by publishing their work in it, and to our readers. Participate actively in this new phase of the journal. Send us your suggestions and criticisms, to help us improve the level of the published papers. Submit at least some of your work for publication in Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria and, in your manuscripts, do not fail to cite studies published in this journal. We need to have an official journal of the Academia Brasileira de Neurologia that is increasingly worthy of this name, and with ever greater recognition within Brazil and abroad.
