SOCIO-RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE INTRODUCTION SECTION IN ACADEMIC ARTICLES OF THE DISCIPLINARY CULTURE IN THE HISTORY AREA

ABSTRACT

This study aims to describe how the History area produces and understands the Introduction section of academic articles. For this, we rely on studies by Swales (1990)SWALES, J. M. Genre Analysis: English in academic and research settings. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990., regarding his conception of genres and his methodological proposal CARS (Create a Research Space). Regarding the study of disciplinary culture, we have the theoretical contributions of Hyland (2000HYLAND, K. Disciplinary discourse: social interactions in academic writing. Singapura: Pearson, 2000., 2009HYLAND, K. Academic discourse: English in a global context. London: Continuum, 2009.) and Bhatia (2004)BHATIA, V. K. Worlds of written discourse: a genre-based view. London: Continuum, 2004.. Our research, of an exploratory-descriptive nature, presents a corpus of thirty academic articles, distributed in four journals in the History area, with stratification A1 according to WebQualis Capes, valid for 2013-2016. According to the investigation, we noticed that the Introduction of academic articles in the area under study is configured as an extensive section in which the authors present the context of the object of analysis, the exposure of previous research, the indication of the objectives of the study and the presentation of methodological aspects that made the research feasible.
