Inscription and archive in El error, by César Aira

Abstract

This article proposes a critical reflection on the literary project of the Argentinean writer César Aira, focusing on two related and complementary fields: the field of “inscription” (considering the way in which Aira’s fiction mobilizes signs through situations in which meaning is always unstable and ambivalent) and the field of “archive” (considering the way in which Aira’s fiction makes use of the archive of language and literary tradition through an archival dynamic that is always, also, unstable and ambivalent). The central hypothesis of the article holds that the category of “error” is decisive for the relationship between inscription and archive in Aira’s work, a postulate developed on the basis of the analysis of Aira’s1997 novel El error.
