SPECIES OF FRUIT-FLIES (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE) ASSOCIATED TO GUAVA CROP (PSIDIUM GUAJAVA LINNAEUS) IN FORTALEZA, CEARÁ, BRAZIL

ABSTRACT

The goal of this study was to learn about the species of fruit-flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) associated to guava crop (Psidium guajava Linnaeus) (Myrtaceae) in Fortaleza, Ceará, including population dynamics and quantitative analysis of the population. Collections of these Tephritidae were accomplished, weekly, in guava orchard located at the Universidade Federal do Ceará, from November of 1999 to October of 2000. McPhail traps containing 50 mL of attractive solution (corn glucose) at 100% were used to capture the insects. To determine the association between the host plant and the species of Tephritidae in the area, systemic collections of fruits were made during the same period. Ripe fruits were collected directly from the plants as well as some newly-fallen fruits. Anastrephasororcula Zucchi, Anastrepha zenildae Zucchi and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) were the fruit-fly species associated to guava crop in Fortaleza. The fruit-fly C. capitata was the most abundant species, occurring practically during the whole period of this study.
