Occurrence of glaucoma after surgery for congenital cataracts

RESUMO

Com o objetivo de investigar a freqüência de glaucoma pós cirurgia de catarata congênita, foram avaliados prospectivamente 51 olhos de 44 crianças portadoras dessa enfermidade. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que o glaucoma manifestou-se em 4 casos (7,8%). Em todos, a patogenia do glaucoma envolveu acentuado processo inflamatório e a presença de humor vítreo, na câmara anterior. Nos 4 casos, o glaucoma foi detectado nos primeiros 30 dias do período pós-operatório.

SUMMARY

Aiming the investigation of the occurence of glaucoma after surgery for congenital cataracts, 51 eyes of 44 children with this disease were evaluated prospectively. Results showed incidence of glaucoma in 4 cases (7.8%). In all of them the mechanism of glaucoma involved inflamation associated with the presence of vitreous humor in the anterior chamber. Glaucoma was detected in all cases within the first month cifter surgery.
