Cardiology and Public health: 40 years

Dear Editor,

A year ago, in 2011, in the UN, a high level meeting took place with the goal of reinforcing the prevention policies of circulatory diseases and other chronic conditions in the national agendas of public health¹. Some proposals still depend on better evaluation², but the dialog between cardiology and public health has been enriching both areas. In Brazil, this dialog celebrates 40 years, counted from the inauguration of the first Preventive Cardiology ambulatory in the public health system of Rio Grande do Sul by Prof. Aloyzio Achutti, in 1972, remembered here with a picture. The pioneer speech uttered then is available in the Internet³.
