High School students with Bolivian immigrant backgrounds: experience reports on languages, cultures and identities

Abstract:

This article aims to present and discuss the cultural experiences of Bolivian high school students in Brazil. The empirical research was conducted in a public school in São Paulo between 2018 and 2019. Twenty-one students from the 3rd grade of High School were interviewed, 14 bolivians and 7 brazilians with bolivian backgrounds. The results indicate the relations between youth and their languages (Spanish, Portuguese and native languages), with the Bolivian folk fraternities, and how they identify themselves. The analysis of the reports reveals singular, diverse and heterogeneous experiences, showing different appropriations of languages, varying degrees of contact with bolivian culture and different forms of identification.
