As festas da Independência brasileira promovidas pela Sociedade Comemorativa da Independência do Império no Rio de Janeiro revelam um significativo engajamento popular com o Estado imperial. O controle dessas celebrações pelo 'povo' da capital do Brasil aos poucos chegou a preocupar tanto membros da elite - perturbados diante do controle dos símbolos nacionais como a estátua equestre de d. Pedro I por patriotas populares - como republicanos que rejeitavam a monarquia, pois os patriotas populares demonstraram um monarquismo preocupante. Depois da morte do fundador e principal líder da Sociedade, em 1886, um grupo de homens estreitamente associado ao governo conservador tomou o seu controle e tentou impor celebrações convenientes e disciplinadas.

The celebrations of Brazilian independence promoted by the Society for the Commemoration of the Empire's Independence in Rio de Janeiro reveal a significant popular engagement with the imperial state. The control of these celebrations by members of the Brazilian capital's povo (common people) gradually came to preoccupy both members of the elite, disconcerted at the control of national symbols like the equestrian statue of Emperor Pedro I by popular patriots, and republicans who rejected the monarchy, since the popular patriots demonstrated a disturbing monarchism. After the death of the society's founder and driving force in 1886, a group of men closely associated with the conservative government took over the society and sought to impose their vision of appropriate, disciplined celebrations.

Uma imagem religiosa de obscuras origens medievais tornou-se casualmente objeto de um culto cívico religioso voltado para a construção da memória da Independência da Colômbia. Em meio às políticas de memória ativadas pelo Bicentenário, cabe perguntar pelos esquecimentos e silêncios que são parte constituinte e necessária desse típico lugar de memória.

A religious image with obscure medieval origins became by chance the core of a civic religious cult aimed to the construction of the memory of Colombian Independence. Among the policies of memory activated by the Bicentenary, the silence and oblivion as necessary components of such a typical 'place of memory' need to be examined.

O artigo discute a consolidação da Revolta da Chibata (Rio de Janeiro, 1910) como um tema da memória nacional brasileira, pela análise de diferentes momentos e tentativas de recuperação, apropriação e comemoração do levante. Discute como a edificação do marinheiro negro João Cândido como herói nacional foi, ao longo do século XX, um processo complexo, que revela valores de diferentes temporalidades, contextos e lugares sociais. Analisando três níveis de memória - coletiva, nacional e individual -, busco compreender como as celebrações relacionadas a essa revolta revelam também violências, silêncios e esquecimentos, ao mesmo tempo em que embates são travados na procura por reconhecimento e legitimação de um ícone na época da celebração de seu centenário.

This article discusses the consolidation of the "Chibata Revolt" ("The Revolt of the Whip") (Rio de Janeiro, 1910) as a theme in Brazilian national memory, through the analysis of different moments and attempts at the restoration, appropriation and commemoration of the rising. I discuss how the building of the black sailor João Cândido as a national hero was a complex process during the twentieth century, which reveals values of different temporalities, contexts and social places. Analyzing three levels of memory - collective, national and individual -, I seek to understand how the celebrations related to this revolt also revealed violence, silence and forgetfulness, at the ecebido: março / 2011; aprovado: maio / 2011 time that clashes occur in the search for the recognition and legitimacy of an icon in the celebration of its centenary.

Com base na nova historiografia alemã, o artigo trata de algumas formas de compartilhar a experiência, do dever da memória e do reescrever da história no que tange ao genocídio durante a guerra colonial (1904-1907) no sudoeste africano. A história e a memória passam por um processo de descolonização, tanto na Alemanha quanto na Namíbia, que transcorre por meio de petições por reparações ou protestos diante de monumentos do período (pós-)colonial ou de rituais de comemorações. Sobre essas experiências, as histórias nacionais de países africanos apresentam tensões intrínsecas ao caráter multicultural ou pluriétnico das sociedades pós-coloniais.

Based on the new German historiography, this paper deals with some forms of sharing experience, with the task of memory and of rewriting history in view of the genocide during the Colonial War (1904-1907) in South West Africa. History and memory undergo a process of decolonization both in Germany and in Namibia, which takes place by means of petitions for reparations, or protests in front of monuments of the (post-)colonial period, or commemoration rituals. About these experiences, the national histories of the African countries present tensions intrinsic to the multi- or pluriethnic character of the post-colonial societies.

O artigo trata das tensões na memória pública da Revolução Constitucionalista, baseando-se na análise da invenção do culto cívico dos mortos em combate entre 1932 e 1937. Busca compreender a relação entre o luto como expressão dos sentimentos pessoais da perda e o culto cívico dos mortos, que estabelecia um sentido político preciso para a morte dos combatentes.

The article deals with the tensions in the public memory of the Constitutionalist Revolution based on the analysis of the invention of the civic cult of the dead soldiers between 1932 and 1937. It seeks to understand the relationship between grief as the expression of personal loss and the civic cult of the dead, which established a political and historical meaning for the death of combatants.

O artigo analisa o processo de constituição de funerais em liturgias cívicas, destacando sua relação com outros fenômenos históricos, como a conformação dos imaginários nacionais, o processo de individualização moderno e as mudanças nas formas de lidar com a morte. Assim, pretende conjugar elementos que permitam refletir sobre a conformação de um campo específico de pesquisas, cuja potencialidade permanece ainda pouco explorada. Chamando a atenção para os limites das análises centradas apenas nos usos políticos e intencionais do passado, ressalta a importância de considerar as dimensões utópica e imaginária presentes nos rituais e festas cívicas, sugerindo a relevância de tal reflexão para pensar o próprio desenvolvimento da prática historiográfica.

This article analyzes the process of constitution of funerals in civic liturgies, emphasizing their relationship with other historical phenomena, as the conformation of the national imaginary, the modern individualization process, and the changes in the ways death is dealt with. So, it intends to conjugate elements about the configuration of a specific field of research, which is not really developed. Criticizing the analyses centered exclusively on the political and intentional uses of the past, it emphasizes the importance of considering the utopian and imaginary dimensions of the rituals and civic parties, and suggests the relevance of this reflection to think about the development of historiography.

O artigo focaliza as celebrações do jubileu de prata integralista. Entre 1957 e 1958 promoveu-se uma série de eventos comemorativos do movimento fundado em 1932. Com o compartilhamento de sua cultura política, o integralismo vinculado ao Partido de Representação Popular (PRP) projetou estratégias e eventos que objetivaram a manutenção de sua presença e aderência militante. Tais investidas foram marcadas pela realização de dois eventos especiais: o XVI Congresso Nacional do PRP em Vitória (ES), em julho de 1957, e as festividades dos 25 anos do Movimento Integralista, que ocorreram durante o mês de outubro do mesmo ano. Ambas as celebrações marcaram a retomada ritualística do integralismo, fator que acentuou ainda mais sua já contraditória presença no período pós-guerra.

This article looks at the commemorations of the integralist silver jubilee. Between 1957 and 1958 the integralists promoted a series of events to celebrate the trajectory of the movement, founded in 1932. Sharing its political culture, the integralism linked to the Popular Representation Party (PRP) designed strategies and events that focused on maintaining its presence and activists. This was marked by two special events: a) the Sixteenth National Congress of the PRP in Vitória (ES) in July 1957; b) the festivities of the 25th anniversary of the integralist movement - held in October of the same year. Both celebrations marked the ritualistic resumption of integralism, a factor that further accentuated the already contradictory Integralist presence in the post-war period.

O artigo apresenta uma análise dos 'usos políticos do passado' feitos pelos militantes do movimento estudantil na década de 1970 no intuito de reforçar a identidade associativa e legitimar a resistência contra a ditadura militar. A instrumentalização do passado se fez a partir da ênfase no martírio de estudantes vítimas da repressão: a morte de Alexandre Vannucchi Leme (aluno da Geologia da USP e militante da ALN) pelos agentes do Exército em 1973, e o 'desaparecimento' de Honestino Guimarães (último presidente da UNE na clandestinidade). Nesse culto às vítimas da ditadura, também se relembra a morte do estudante secundarista Edson Luís, baleado por policiais durante uma manifestação de rua, em 1968.

This paper presents an analysis of 'political uses of the past' made by activists from the student movement in the 1970s in order to strengthen associative identity and legitimate resistance to the military dictatorship. The instrumentalization of the past was made through an emphasis on the martyrdom of student victims of repression: the death of Alexandre Vannucchi Leme (a geology student in USP and ALN militant) by army agents in 1973 and the 'disappearance' of Honestino Guimarães (last underground president of UNE). In the cult of victims of the dictatorship also remembered is the death of Edson Luis, a secondary school student shot by the police during a street demonstration in 1968.

Estudo sobre a comemoração funerária das mulheres em Atenas a partir dos epigramas. Trata-se de explorar a hipótese de que os contextos funerários, como espaços de 'publicização' e de exposição, mostram uma relação positiva da comunidade políade com as mulheres, através da valorização de temas como o das relações de philia e da recorrência de elogios derivados da tradição épica, em épocas anteriores destinados apenas aos elogios fúnebres masculinos. Discute-se essa positividade sob a ótica da tese de Vernant sobre a forte conexão entre espaço público e identidade política, concluindo que a apresentação feminina em espaços funerários pode ser concebida como uma das formas pelas quais a sociedade políade representa sua identidade, ultrapassando o quadro restrito dos valores cidadãos.

This paper analyses the funerary celebrations of women in Athens, focusing particularly on Attic epigrams. It explores the thesis that funerary contexts, viewed as 'publicizing' and exposing spaces, highlight a positive relation of the polis community towards its women, by means of the valorization of question such as philia relationships and the recurring epic traditional eulogies, which formerly applied only to men. I seek to discuss this positivity, drawing on Vernant's thesis of a strong connection between the public space and political identity, arguing that female presentation in funerary spaces can be conceived as one of the ways by which polis society represents its identity, moving beyond the restrictive frame of citizen values.

O artigo estuda o registro de testemunhos em som e imagem, bem como os efeitos desse registro e das mídias, em geral, sobre as pessoas entrevistadas. O autor expõe sua experiência com depoimentos de sobreviventes da Segunda Guerra Mundial na Alemanha e analisa diversos aspectos, como a ética no uso dessas entrevistas em filmes, e as relações entre ciência, pedagogia e jornalismo. O autor comenta a reinterpretação de depoimentos pelas gerações posteriores e recorre a quatro exemplos de sua própria família para expor como são variáveis e complexos os julgamentos de personagens antigas no decorrer da história.

This article looks at the recording of witnesses in sound and image, as well as the effects of this recording and of the media in general on the people interviewed. The author discusses his experience with statements from survivors of the Second World War in Germany and analyzes various questions, such as ethics in the use of these interviews in films, and relations between science, pedagogy and journalism. The author comments on the reinterpretation of statements by later generations and draws on four examples from his own family to show how the judgment of old characters during history is complex and variable.

O artigo tem por objetivo examinar a presença do cinema nas exposições universais entre 1893 (World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago) e 1939 (New York World's Fair). Integrante de uma cultura visual construída por esses espaços dedicados a celebrar o capitalismo, o cinema tem sua trajetória identificada à das diferentes feiras mundiais pela sua capacidade de entreter e, ao mesmo tempo, educar. Consolidando-se como meio de comunicações de massas em meio à Primeira Guerra Mundial, participará de maneira mais intensa das disputas simbólicas de um mundo prestes a entrar em seu segundo conflito mundial. Atingirá um público mais amplo, constituindo-se na principal 'vitrine' em que a nação projeta as virtudes a serem comemoradas. O novo grande espetáculo visual assumirá, nesse quadro, maior destaque por meio de filmes idealizados como verdadeiros monumentos cinematográficos.

The objective of this article is to examine the presence of cinema in World Fairs between the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and 1939 (the New York World's Fair). As an integral part of a visual culture constructed by these spaces to celebrate capitalism, the trajectory of cinema is identified with these world fairs due to its ability to entertain and, at the same time, to educate. Cinema was established as a means of mass communication during the First World War and afterwards would participate more actively in the symbolic disputes of a world about to enter the second global conflict. It would reach a broader public, becoming the main 'showcase' in which nations projected virtues to be celebrated. The new striking visual spectacle assumed, within this context, greater emphasis through films idealized as true cinematographic monuments.

O objetivo deste artigo é, sob uma perspectiva pós-estruturalista, examinar a cobertura dos atentados de 11 de setembro de 2001 pelos jornais O Globo e Folha de S. Paulo, os jornais brasileiros impressos de maior circulação na época, no dia seguinte aos ataques. O argumento central que procuramos desenvolver é o de que a atuação de tais meios de comunicação foi fundamental na definição de práticas de exclusão no nível internacional. Ao situarem o Brasil como um insider com base na maior aproximação a valores internalizados no contexto de transbordamento global do espaço político norte-americano após o fim da Guerra Fria, desenvolvem uma 'política externa' em que sociedades e grupos não adaptados a tal padrão são classificados como 'disfuncionais' e 'anômalos' numa ordem de atores 'civilizados'. Consolida-se, assim, o entendimento da diferença - no caso, as organizações terroristas e seus patrocinadores - como alteridade, e se naturalizam hierarquias entre identidade e diferença.

The main purpose of this article is to examine, from a post-structuralist perspective, the coverage of the attacks of September 11, 2001 by O Globo and Folha de S. Paulo, the newspapers with the largest circulation in Brazil, on the day after the attacks. The central argument is that the performance of such papers has been fundamental in the definition of exclusionary practices at the international level, because, when they locate Brazil as an insider due to its approximation to the US and Western values after the end of the Cold War, they develop a 'foreign policy' in which societies and groups that are not adapted to this standard are classified as 'dysfunctional' and 'anomalous' in an order of 'civilized' actors. Thus, the understanding of difference - in this case, terrorist organizations and their sponsors - as otherness is consolidated and hierarchies between identity and difference are naturalized.

A ação do DIP tem recebido particular atenção, sobretudo quando se trata de evidenciar o caráter repressor e controlador que o órgão de fato exerceu. Menor ênfase tem sido dada a sua ação como editor e financiador de obras favoráveis ao regime: no mais das vezes, não se vai além da citação de uma lista de títulos favoráveis ao regime, que comprovam o investimento na imagem do chefe. Pesquisa realizada em dois acervos norte-americanos permitiu manipular um rol significativo de obras publicadas no período, as quais apontam para uma trama complexa entre autores, editores e gráficas. Além disso, a presença desse material no exterior indica os esforços do regime para atingir uma audiência internacional.

DIP's actions, especially its repressive ones, have attracted considerable attention among scholars in Brazil and abroad. Less emphasis has been put on DIP's efforts as an editor and financer of books that were well-inclined to the government. Most of the time all that is given is a list of titles favorable to the regime, which is considered to prove the investment in the image of the head of the regime, Getúlio Vargas. Research in two north-American collections allowed an ensemble of books published in the period to be put together, which pointed to the complex relations established among authors, publishers and printers. Furthermore, the existence of these foreign materials abroad indicates the existence propaganda efforts of the regime targeted towards an international audience.

O presente artigo tem como propósito oferecer uma análise sobre a dupla dimensão do movimento intelectual de história das ideias, organizado na América Latina por volta da década 1940, sob a liderança destacada do filósofo mexicano Leopoldo Zea (1912-2004). A primeira dimensão, denominada 'projeto disciplinar', expressa os fundamentos de uma história das ideias latino-americana como disciplina específica, abarcando os pressupostos filosóficos, epistemológicos, teóricos e metodológicos que lhe deram sustentação. Já a segunda dimensão, denominada 'projeto extradisciplinar', caracteriza-se pela função pragmática e identitária atribuída pelos representantes do movimento à história das ideias latino-americana. A reflexão sobre as íntimas relações entre essas duas dimensões ou projetos, ou seja, entre a disciplina História das Ideias e suas funções, constitui, em última instância, o objetivo principal deste trabalho.

The goal of this article is to analyze the double dimension of the intellectual movement of History of Ideas, organized in Latin America in the 1940s, under the leadership of the prominent Mexican philosopher Leopoldo Zea (1912-2004). The first dimension, known as 'disciplinary project,' sets the grounds for a history of ideas in Latin America as a specific subject, including the philosophical, epistemological, theoretical, and methodological assumptions used as a foundation for his work. The second dimension, called 'extradisciplinary project,' is characterized by a pragmatic as well as an identity function assigned to the Latin American history of ideas by the representatives of the movement. Ultimately, the main objective of this work is to reflect upon the intimate relationship between these two dimensions or approaches, that is, between the History of Ideas discipline and its functions.

Este artigo analisa os projetos existentes para a ocupação ou exploração econômica do antigo Maranhão, antes de 1626. Tais projetos - francês, inglês e holandês - concorrem com o plano luso-espanhol de ocupação da fronteira entre o norte do Estado do Brasil e as Índias de Castela entre os séculos XVI e XVII. Assim, a conquista do Maranhão (1615) será discutida com base em duas questões: 1. A disputa por espaços de atuação nesta parte do Atlântico; 2. As grandes mudanças ocorridas no universo luso-brasileiro com a União Dinástica (1580-1640).

This article analyzes the projects for the occupation or economic exploitation of the old Maranhão before 1626. French, English and Dutch projects competed with the Luso-Spanish plan for the occupation of the border between the North of Brazil and the Indies of Castile in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Thus, the conquest of Maranhão (1615) will be discussed in relation to two questions: 1. Competition for spaces of action in this part of the Atlantic. 2. The major changes in the Luso-Brazilian universe following the Dynastic Union (1580-1640).
