Women urinary incontinence in post-menopause lifetime: a public health problem

Abstract

Objectives: to verify urinary incontinence prevalence in women who are experiencing post-menopause period and to identify factors related to this condition. Methodology: a cross-sectional descriptive study. The sample comprised 130 women, aged between 50 and 65 years old, resident in Catuípe county, Rio Grande do Sul State and who had at least one year of amenorrhea. Data collection occurred in interviews using a questionnaire containing variables on socio-demographic, gynecological-obstetric and genitourinary description factors. The evaluation of weight and height also established the body mass index. A descriptive analysis was used for data treatment. Results: women's age average was 58±4.39 years old, and amenorrhea average time was 10.6±7.1 years. In relation to co-morbidity, the systemic arterial hypertension was the most prevalent. Concerning gynecological-obstetric description, most women had natural parturition. For urine loose, 25.3% reported it positively while coughing and climbing stairs. It was noticed that women that had the highest body mass index showed higher incontinence periodicity. Conclusions: data suggest that urinary incontinence has important prevalence in post-menopaused women and that this condition is in part related to possible advised factors, indicating need for intervention in this population.
