Work Levels and Embeddedness in a Drug Rehab Center Social Network

There are several studies about the intensity of the relationships and strength of actors in a network within an organizational scope, but only a few include the concept of work levels. Thus, we conducted a multilevel survey in a network of 38 drug rehab centers (Comunidades Terapêuticas [CT]) in the Region of Curitiba, Brazil. We investigated the CT leader's work level and the positioning of the CT in an intraorganizational net (when belonging to multi-branch institutions) within the network and with institutions beyond this network. High degrees of work levels were associated with internal network centrality (inDegree) and coordination with actors outside the network; intra-network positioning did not correlate with work levels. Higher work level leaders belonged to organizations with central positions in the network; they also manage more contacts outside the network. The correlation between the leaders' work levels and organization centrality in the network does not necessarily mean a causal relationship. We merely stated that the relationship exists and that probably the two movements occur simultaneously.
