What do we want to know when we research life stories of teachers?1 1 Apoio: Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES).

Abstract

In light of postmodern perspectives, the article analyzes epistemological and methodological aspects of research with life stories of teachers, trying to understand the nature of the knowledge produced from this research. Resonating with the paradigm presented by the study, the article, more concerned with questioning than with exposing conclusions, finds support in different theories. However, the analysis understands that research with life stories does not intend to describe, to explain or to grasp a given reality, but to reveal and to raise educational issues which allow for a comprehension of the meaning of the educational processes experienced by the teachers that narrate their own experiences. These teachers are no longer objects, but participants, authors that (re)frame their trajectories over the course of the investigation, offering clues that lead to a rethinking of Education.
