Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to investigate how the bicycle racing emerged in Curitiba. For this purpose, the newspapers from the period delimited between 1895 and 1913 were used as sources. The analysis of the materials indicated a relationship between the bicycle and the emerging urban ideas in the capital of Paraná in the temporality in question, as well as the need for a pedagogization of riding by bicycle because of the growing city. By way of conclusion the article points out that the presence of bicycles and races in Curitiba, at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, contributes significantly in the formation of athletic gestures and in the education of bodies in individuals who interacted with bicycles.
