Abstract
The aim of this article is to propose a yet underexplored reading of the article "A nova geração," by Machado de Assis, from the perspective of style, a recurrent notion in the rhetoric and poetics manuals of nineteenth-century Brazil, through which the critic analyzes the work of poets in tune with the most diverse aesthetic-literary tendencies, from the late romantics, the realists-naturalists, the socialists, to the supporters of the so-called scientific poetry.
