Neo-Roman Republicanism in J. S. Mill’s conception of freedom

ABSTRACT

John Stuart Mill is considered one of the great representatives of the liberal tradition. Despite such consideration having plausibility, it is possible to affirm that Mill’s practical philosophy is related to another tradition of Western political thought: republicanism. This article aims to present a similar aspect between Mill’s proposals of republican theories, more precisely, the proposals of the neo-Roman theory of republicanism. For this, this article refers to a work by Mill that is not associated with his theory of freedom, the work The Subject of Women.
