NEOLIBERALISM, WORK AND THE PANDEMIC: EXPERIENCES AND WAYS OF COPING AMONG URBAN OUTSKIRTS’ YOUNG PEOPLE

ABSTRACT

Considering the effects of neoliberal policies on the precariousness of rights, especially in education and work, the pandemic situation has aggravated the lack of social protection and the various forms of material insecurity and symbolic uncertainties faced by young people at a crucial moment of constitution of aspirations and projects of the future, mainly for those belonging to the popular classes, women, black people, and residents of the urban outskirts. This paper presents the results of a quantitative and qualitative research conducted with 208 young people living in the outskirts of São Paulo (SP), Brazil, focusing on the impacts of neoliberalism and the pandemic on their trajectories. The results demonstrate the challenges and multiple collective strategies mobilized by these actors.
