SHIELDING-RESISTING: EDUCATION OF YOUNG WOMEN AT THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE OF BAHIA 1879-1949

ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the analysis of the book of the professor and researcher Iole Macedo Vanin, PhD in History, from the Federal University of Bahia, published in 2015. The objective is to rescue the book As Damas de Branco: Médicas, Odontólogas e Farmacêuticas (The Ladies in White: Doctors, Dentists, and Pharmacists) as an important historiographical work on the passage of a group of about 400 women through the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia thanks to the well-known Leôncio de Carvalho Education Reform, in the year of 1879, which allowed women to enter Higher Education. The review aims to present the work of the researcher linked to the Graduate Program in Interdisciplinary Studies on Women, Gender and Feminism (from the Portuguese, Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos Interdisciplinares sobre Mulheres, Gênero e Feminismo; PPGNEIM) and to the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies on Women (from the Portuguese, Núcleo de Estudos Interdisciplinares sobre a Mulher; NEIM), to follow the theoretical and methodological reflections proposed by the author, as well as the paths that allowed her to unveil the processes of shielding and resistance produced by this group of women during the first 70 years of the exercise of the right of accessing Higher Education. In this study, the gaps found regarding the presence of analysis and data on black women in this group of Bahian biomedicine were noted.
