THE HISTORICAL RELEVANCE IN GENDER PERSPECTIVE ACCORDING TO THE STUDENTS OF SECONDARY EDUCATION AND BACCALAUREATE OF MURCIA (SPAIN)

ABSTRACT

The human values, since these are capable of explaining the motivations of individuals. These values are shaped by social representations that are transmitted between generations and in which academic training, especially the teaching of history, plays an important role. This paper analyses the values that young people attribute to what they consider to be the most outstanding historical figures, based on a validated survey and interview carried out with 16-18 year-old students in the city of Murcia. The data obtained were analysed using a non-experimental quantitative design and the IBM SPSS statistical software, with the aim of identifying both the selected characters and the predominant values associated with them based on Schwartz’s conceptions of motivational values. The results bring us closer to a stereotypical view of history in which traditional and exemplary narratives dominated by male characters, ascribed to a political-military typology associated with meritocracy, predominate. Historical agency is therefore compromised by these traits that distance individuals from responsible and democratic citizenship.
