Secondary Education Geography and History teachers on assessment

In this study we aimed to identify the assessment concepts and practices of Secondary Education Geography and History teachers in the Region of Murcia (Spain). We have inquired about the aims and procedures of evaluation of student learning, on what is meant by assessment and how it is developed. A questionnaire was used taking a sample of over a hundred teachers. The results indicate a traditional teacher evaluation concept in which the exam still dominates as a fundamental instrument, although teachers are aware of the need of using various assessment instruments. We sense that teachers have more advanced concepts than their own practices. The challenge is to perform an authentic skill assessment.
