Florestan Fernandes’ extensive oeuvre contains much more than what has so far been valued. A critical and reductive historical circumstance has impoverished the field of sociological research and the sensitivity of the social sciences in relation to transformed and post-national-developmentalist Brazil. New and unexpected agents took the lead in the historical process and challenged consolidated sociological knowledge. Florestan Fernandes’ work is, to be sure, dense and poses challenges to research, interpretation and critical review of knowledge that endures with no consistent relation to Brazil’s new and complicated reality.
