PARATEXTS AND TRANSLATION: EUGÉNIO DE ANDRADE’S MODUS OPERANDI

Abstract

Eugénio de Andrade’s translation activity represents a conspicuous but less studied part out of all his production. At this regard, the poet has not left us systematic studies, just short and asystematic reflections which accompany his works. In this paper we will analyse various paratexts (Genette, 1987Genette, Gérard. Introduction à l’architexte. Paris: Éditions du Seuil, 1979.; Batchelor, 2018) in order to identify the poet’s translation method and clarify his relationship with this kind of activity. We will find out how, for the poet, the translation practice implies the comparative analysis of the versions in different languages, and the philological study of the texts: thus, a method that presents characteristic similarities with some of the most modern theories about translation (Buffoni; Meschonnic) will be outlined. The analysis will also let us demonstrate that Eugénio de Andrade approaches the text as a “text in motion”.
