  • DESASSOSSEGO: PALAVRAS, TEMPOS E RELAÇÕES EM UM PERCURSO ETNOGRÁFICO Artigos

    Vianna, Adriana

Abstract In dialogue with reflections by Veena Das, this article explores some dimensions present in an ethnographic journey centered on the relationship with family members of state violence victims. Words, times, and relations set up the axis around which two different research situations are elaborated. The first of them is thought of from the image of the shrapnel, a fragment that surprises and generates feelings of bewilderment towards what is unfolding. The second situation is built under the regime of conversation, allowing for reflection on different dimensions of intimacy and not-knowing that permeate a relationship of research and trust.
  • FIGURAÇÕES DA DOR: A MEMÓRIA ATRAVÉS DA VIDA Artigos

    Sarti, Cynthia

Abstract In this text I discuss my encounters with Veena Das’s ideas over the course of my own research on suffering and violence. I trace the paths that led to my investigation of the theme through the memories of Brazil’s military dictatorship (1964-1985), highlighting the points where the author’s work resonated and made itself present. The reading of violence proposed by Das, which sees it not as merely destructive but also as a source of possibilities for reconstructing life after devastation, provided a way forward for my own inquiry that focuses not on the events of the dictatorship per se, but on the singularity of the experiences of suffering, apprehended in the forms of speaking expressed in the testimony of those who lived through these experiences or were affected by them.

Abstract In this article, we reflect on the daily life of a white middle-class family living in southern Brazil during the Covid-19 pandemic. Approaching care as a practical activity sensitive to the details of everyday life, we emphasize the relevance of the notion of ordinary ethics developed by Veena Das. Through the narratives of members of this family, it is possible to see the invisible and invisiblized work necessary to maintain ordinary life and the weaving together of the ordinary and the extraordinary revealed in the relationship of three generations in the same house. Finally, we argue for the fundamental connection between ordinary ethics and forms of life, highlighting how the domestic space is not only a crucial structure of care in the Brazilian scenario of social and political vulnerability, but is also an active element in which forms of life take form and come to life.
  • TRAIÇÕES EM FAMÍLIA: AS TEXTURAS DO PARENTESCO Artigos

    Pierobon, Camila

Abstract In dialogue with Veena Das’s works on kinship, family betrayals and death, in this text I describe the histories of family betrayals of Leonor, highlighting the inscription of these betrayals in everyday life and in the textures of her relationships to kin and to me. I show how the pain of the death of a son, the conflicts between siblings, as well as the forms of remaking herself by reinhabiting and renarrating the events, are embedded in the relationships of the present. The text presents the family betrayals, the conflict between siblings and the death of a son not as spectacular events but as threads in the weave of life. I show how the work of time is important to the reconstruction of life and also to the sharing of experiences of pain.
  • INDIVÍDUO E INDIVIDUALISMO EM NORBERT ELIAS Artigos

Abstract The essay, theoretical in nature, discusses the concepts of individual and individualism in Norbert Elias. To this end, three objectives are pursued: - starting from the works The court society, The civilizing process, and The society of individuals, we discuss the concept of figuration, Eliasian conceptual solution to the antithetical pair individual and society; - Mozart, sociology of a genius is used as a case study in which the genius is seen in his figuration, interdependent relations and social constraints; - finally, thinking with and from Elias, we put forward the understanding of individualism as individual and social habitus, a formulation that indicates the radicality of the concept of figuration, which affirms society as the formation of interdependent individuals, despite the individual or social perception of possible autonomy, interdependence consisting of an empirical and ontological question.
  • CULTURA DE OFÍCIO MARÍTIMA PESQUEIRA Artigos

    Ramalho, Cristiano Wellington Noberto

Abstract The article approaches a traditional group of artisanal fishermen from Brazil, the rafters, aiming to understand how they constituted a culture of maritime fishing trade, from the sixteenth century until 1970. For that, a socio-historical approach was combined (writings and images) with field research where 12 deep sea rafters from São José da Coroa Grande beach, Pernambuco, were interviewed. It concludes that the rafters represented the encounter of two traditions (the maritime and the profession) that had in a floating society (the raft) its existential landmark and locus of socio-cultural reproduction.
  • “POR QUE HOMOSSEXUAIS SÓ EXISTEM NA CIDADE?” A RECENTE “INSTITUCIONALIZAÇÃO” DA “HOMOSSEXUALIDADE” NO SUL DE MOÇAMBIQUE Artigos

    Miguel, Francisco

Abstract Based on an ethnographic research carried out in recent years in southern Mozambique, this article answers anthropologically the question posed by a Mozambican viewer about why there are no homosexual subjects in local rural contexts. The central argument presented here is that although the (homo)erotic desire precedes and dispenses with language, the constitution of a subject that is properly homosexual does not. Therefore, cities will provide not only an environment conducive to the experience of erotic and identity experiences of this subject but will offer the necessary episteme for such subject to be constituted as such.

Abstract Electromobility is taking shape in a market of great relevance on a global scale in which Bolivia plays an important role as it has one of the main reserves of lithium. Bearing both aspects in mind, the aim of this article is to find out how the electric car market is being shaped discursively in Bolivian territory. My hypothesis points to the existence of three narratives that could be synthesised as follows: in the recursive presence of an idea of a sui generis nature, in the emergence in the last lustrums of a technological nationalism, and in the strategic exhortation of a green morality as a political self-asscription. In terms of methodology, I carried out field work in Bolivia from January to March 2020, combining interviews, direct observation, and consultation of national newspapers.
  • INVEJA E CORPO FECHADO NO MARACATU DE BAQUE SOLTO PERNAMBUCANO Artigos

    Baraldi, Filippo Bonini

Abstract During Carnival, the members of maracatu de baque solto groups, a performance occurring in Pernambuco (Northeast Brazil) feel exposed to various type of illnesses, caused by the “envious eye” (olho grande) of their rivals. This motivates them to accomplish a number of defensive practices, both on a symbolical and on an aesthetical dimension. In order to perform safely, they need to “close the body” (fechar o corpo), physiologically, symbolically, and aesthetically. In this context, the expression “closed body,” is synonymous of a protected, powerful, healthy, invincible body, while the expression “open body” refers to a vulnerable one, susceptible to the attacks of negative entities, aroused by the enemies’ envious eye. In this article, I suggest that that the emotional experience of the Maracatu performers is driven by this particular way of perceiving the body during the carnival period.
  • TEORIA PÓS-COLONIAL E PENSAMENTO BRASILEIRO NA OBRA DE GUERREIRO RAMOS: O PENSAMENTO POLÍTICO (1955-1958) Artigos

Lynch, Christian Edward Cyril; Marreca, Pedro Paiva

Abstract The article analyzes the texts produced by Guerreiro Ramos between 1955 and 1958; period in which he turns his efforts to the study of the Brazilian political thought. It was a second stage of the author’s research project, focused on the elaboration of a post-colonial social science applied to Brazil. This project had started at IBESP, where he had elaborated critical studies on Brazilian social thought. Once he joined the ISEB, he redirected his research to the history of Brazilian political thought, in order to complete his theory of Brazilian society with an ideology of national development. The adoption of a historical-systematic method to analyze the texts allowed us to apprehend the elements of continuity between the two phases of the research. This diachronic perspective of analysis contemplates the systematic dimension of the author’s work, what is not perceptible in analyzes focused solely on the logical reconstruction of his theory.
  • PÓS-COLONIALISMO E DECOLONIALIDADES: ETNICIDADE, REPRODUÇÃO, GÊNERO E SEXUALIDADE - VOZES DA ÁFRICA - NOTAS A PARTIR DE UM CONHECIMENTO EM CURSO Artigos

    Castro, Mary Garcia

Abstract This article takes off from the experience of a post-graduation course (the Course), guided by a critical perspective to the ‘coloniality of knowledge’ and underlining the importance of space for non-Eurocentric voices in universities and interlace of knowledge, such as academically legitimized and those who embody community experiencs and cultural heritages of original and enslaved peoples. Considering authors, especially feminists, Latin Americans and Africans, about postcolonialism and decoloniality, the Course analyzes novels by African authors and draws it as a critical experience to the coloniality of knowledge; denied cultural identities are rescued and maternity research beyond the private as a construct of social reproduction is encouraged. It is also demonstrated the potentiality of the interlace between sociology and literature.
  • “NA SUA ESCRITA EU SOU EXISTIDA”: LENDO A HISTÓRIA DA ANTROPOLOGIA VIA TEXTURES OF THE ORDINARY Registros De Pesquisa

    Singh, Bhrigupati

Abstract In this essay I try to suggest a non-teleological way of reading the history of anthropology, by placing Veena Das’s Textures of the ordinary (2020) in relation to her previous books, beginning with Structure and cognition: aspects of Hindu caste and ritual (1977). Rather than a teleological movement from structuralism to “post-structuralism” or “self-reflexive” work, I point to the continuation and transfiguration of the concepts of structure and event across Das’s different books, as a way of also imagining movements within social theory more broadly, without each successive “paradigm” having to dialectically negate its predecessor. Further, I ask what it means to age or to “mature” within a body of scholarly work, and how we might take an author to be growing simultaneously older and younger, if we take aging in thought not necessarily to be solely a question of chronology or teleology.
