ABSTRACT In this work, mathematical models were developed which allow the simulation of the honey production at a certain municipality. These models are based in ordinary differential equations and were based on the neoclassical macroeconomic model by Lucas 23 for macroeconomic growth. In the models’ parameters determination, nonlinear numeric optimization methods were employed. As a result of the numerical solution of the model, honey production from four municipalities was simulated. It was also obtained the technology level attained by the honey production of a certain place, by a period of eleven years. Through this index it is possible to order the municipalities in terms of technology application. This is one of the reasons why this index is an indicator of vital importance for agribusiness management.

ABSTRACT A recent formulation for anomalous diffusion problems, which envolves a fourth-order differential term, has presented negative values in its solution for certain cases. This paper presents a study of the effect of secondary diffusion coefficient in order to contribute with the understanding of the solutions behavior in these situations. A function was implemented to represent the variation in the parcel subject to primary and secondary diffusion, according to the amount of the property in diffusion. The formulation for the solution of this new model by the Finite Difference Method is presented. The results obtained are compatible with those presented in previous works in the literature.

ABSTRACT In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of Kirchhoff plates with intermediate damping. The damping considered contemplates the frictional and the Kelvin-Voigt type dampings. We show that the semigroup those equations decays polynomially in time at least with the rate t −1 /(2−2θ ), where θ is a parameter in the interval [0, 1[. Moreover, we prove that this decay rate is optimal.

Let Vi = Fqki , with 1 ≤ i ≤ n, be a family of finite-dimensional linear spaces such that k1 + k2 + ... + kn = N and let V = V1 × V2 × ... × Vn endow with the poset block metric dP, π induced by the poset P and the partition π = k1, k2, ..., kn, encompassing both Niederreiter-Rosenbloom-Tsfasman metric and error-block metric. In this paper, we give a complete description of group of isometries of the metric space V, dP, π, also called the Niederreiter-Rosenbloom-Tsfasman block space. In particular, we reobtain the group of isometries of the Niederreiter-Rosenbloom-Tsfasman space and obtain the group of isometries of the error-block metric space.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a methodology for the solution of a bimodal advection and diffusion problem using the Finite Differences Method. In addition to the advective transport term and primary diffusion (which corresponds to the Fick’s flux), the bimodal diffusion equation includes a term relative to a secondary flow that is modeled by a fourth order differential term. The problem was analyzed for different initial and boundary conditions and the results are compatible with those presented in previous studies in the literature.
  • Constructions of Dense Lattices of Full Diversity Articles

ABSTRACT A lattice construction using ℤ-submodules of rings of integers of number fields is presented. The construction yields rotated versions of the laminated lattices Λn for n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, which are the densest lattices in their respective dimensions. The sphere packing density of a lattice is a function of its packing radius, which in turn can be directly calculated from the minimum squared Euclidean norm of the lattice. Norms in a lattice that is realized by a totally real number field can be calculated by the trace form of the field restricted to its ring of integers. Thus, in the present work, we also present the trace form of the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field. Our focus is on totally real number fields since their associated lattices have full diversity. Along with high packing density, the full diversity feature is desirable in lattices that are used for signal transmission over both Gaussian and Rayleigh fading channels.

ABSTRACT This work is related to the lot sizing problem with flexible parallel machines, which basically consists in determining the quantity of items to be produced, on each of the machines, in a finite time horizon, satisfying a given demand. This problem has an economic origin and involves costs of production, inventory and setup. In the standard problem, each item can be produced on any of the machines, i.e., we have the total machine flexibility. However, it is not always feasible to have total machine flexibility due to the costs. Therefore, it may be important to implement only a limited amount of flexibility. The investment of upgrading a machine to produce a specific product becomes a binary decision variable and there is a global budget on investment decisions. A mathematical formulation to this problem was proposed in the literature and the computational results obtained throwgh a combinatorial optimization package showed that solve the formulation is very difficult, especially for instances with many items. So in this work we have proposed three different heuristics for this problem, in order to find good solutions in low computational times. Experiments were performed to compare the heuristics with the resolution of the model via optimization package. We have seen that by increasing the number of items and machines, the results with better quality were obtained by only one of the heuristics. In terms of computational times, all the heuristics achieved inferior times in average over CPLEX.
  • Numerical Simulation of Two-Phase Flows in Heterogeneous Porous Media Articles

    CARNEIRO, I. B.; BORGES, M. R.; MALTA, S. M. C.

ABSTRACT In this work, we present three-dimensional numerical simulations of water-oil flow in porous media in order to analyze the influence of the heterogeneities in the porosity and permeability fields and, mainly, their relationships upon the phenomenon known in the literature as viscous fingering. For this, typical scenarios of heterogeneous reservoirs submitted to water injection (secondary recovery method) are considered. The results show that the porosity heterogeneities have a markable influence in the flow behavior when the permeability is closely related with porosity, for example, by the Kozeny-Carman (KC) relation. This kind of positive relation leads to a larger oil recovery, as the areas of high permeability (higher flow velocities) are associated with areas of high porosity (higher volume of pores), causing a delay in the breakthrough time. On the other hand, when both fields (porosity and permeability) are heterogeneous but independent of each other the influence of the porosity heterogeneities is smaller and may be negligible.
  • On Euler-Lagrange’s Equations: A New Approach Articles

ABSTRACT A new formalism is proposed to study the dynamics of mechanical systems composed of N connected rigid bodies, by introducing the concept of 6N-dimensional composed vectors. The approach is based on previous works by the authors where a complete formalism was developed by means of differential geometry, linear algebra, and dynamical systems usual concepts. This new formalism is a method for the description of mechanical systems as a whole and not as each separate part. Euler-Lagrange’s Equations are easily obtained by means of this formalism.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to study an exact boundary controllability problem in noncylindrical domains for the linear Klein-Gordon equation. Here, we work near of the extension techniques presented By J. Lagnese in (12) which is based in the Russell’s controllability method. The control time is obtained in any time greater then the value of the diameter of the domain on which the initial data are supported. The control is square integrable and acts on whole boundary and it is given by conormal derivative associated with the above-referenced wave operator.

ABSTRACT Analytical solutions to a set of problems involving groundwater flow can be calculated using the analytical element method (MEA). The possibility of combining the potential function in a single mathematical expression makes MEA attractive because it allows us to consider problems involving confined, unconfined aquifers or the combination of both in the same equation. In this paper, the MEA was used to obtain the groundwater flow solution under the joint action of pumping and injection wells. The computational code has been formulated to allow the use of random data for well flow rates, positions and radii and can be used to evaluate scenarios involving the infinite domain with fixed head boundaries, impermeable barriers or a combination of both. The computational results illustrate some scenarios and include the influence of uniform flow on the configuration of potential and stream lines, the use of image theory and the approximate calculation of isolines through stagnation points.
