Flores, Valdir do Nascimento; Faraco, Carlos Alberto; Gomes, Filipe Almeida

ABSTRACT This article aims to establish a preeminence of language in relation to the other forms of semiosis. To this end, we orchestrate two reflections that, beyond Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics, address the specificities that lead to such a preeminence. They are: the reflections by Valentin N. Vološinov and Émile Benveniste. Vološinov advances specificities of language regarding the socio-cultural functioning of the word, thus external to the sign. Benveniste discusses specificities that are internal to language, related to its ability to interpret itself and interpret the other systems. Finally, based on the conclusions derived from the theoretical analyses, we argue that such specificities could guide discussions about the place of language in the debate on school teaching of Portuguese.

ABSTRACT In the Bakhtin Circle’s propositions, the concepts elaborated do not appear completely split from one another, but inter-connected. Therefore, we believe there are key concepts that are in the foundation of other concepts’ formulation, even though such association does not occur explicitly, as is the case of the notion of singularity. Our goal consists, thus, in establishing a theoretical reflection regarding the relations between singularity and polyphony based on the works Toward a Philosophy of the Act [1920-24] and Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics [1963]. Based on that reflection, we understand that the artistic construction of the polyphonic novel may be perceived as enabled by a recognition of the singularity of each subject and, consequently, of their isonomy in relation to the truth. Such reading key corroborates the perspective that Toward a Philosophy of the Act, launcher of the notion of singularity, acts as a project of philosophical reflection that assists in the comprehension of subsequent Bakhtinian productions.

ABSTRACT In this article, I take the trial of the work Howl by Allen Ginsberg – which took place in the USA, in 1957 – as a starting point to discuss issues concerning language that were raised throughout the legal proceedings. During the trial, matters were questioned ranging from the organization and functioning of the poetic language to what can be said or not according to the impositions of a society. Therefore, the aim of this text is to discuss some of these matters, based on the reflections and ideas of the linguist Émile Benveniste and some of the readers of his work, such as Gérard Dessons and Henri Meschonnic.
  • Um encontro Saussure-Bakhtin na episteme Artigos

Batista, Luiz Eduardo Mendes; Henriques, Stefania Montes

ABSTRACT In this article, we intend to start from certain reinterpretations that have been made about the Saussurean construct on the langue object, taking as a basis mainly the relational notion of system, the linguistic value, to then create possibilities of dialogue with the axiological perspective of langue present in Mikhail Bakhtin. Such perspective in this author takes shape in the concept of heteroglossia and discourse genres, in which this object must be understood in terms of social and historical relations. Also, in the linguistic-textual elaboration of a genre, the statements operate in relation to each other, in order to bring together and/or confront different social and ideological voices. Starting from this episteme, which sees langue and the effects that result from it as a constitutively relational object, we believe that a convergence between the two authors is possible in order to re-signify ways of interpreting the world through the science of language.
  • Intermidialidade e intericonicidade: um diálogo possível? Artigos

ABSTRACT This paper proposes a dialogue between two concepts available for image analysis within the scope of discourse studies: intermediality and intericonicity. The former is characterized by the authorial intent to reproduce an image in a different medium environment. The latter postulates that the interrelationship between images is unconscious. It is argued that the bringing together of these distinct categories allows for the expansion of the theoretical perspectives they embody, namely, social and psychological. Different representations of the burial of Christ are analyzed as they appear in three supports: (i) the Gospels (written Christian discourse); (ii) the paintings by van der Weyden and Rubens (Catholic Christian pictorial discourse); (iii) and the photograph of Clóvis Miranda (photographic journalistic discourse).

Pavlina, Svetlana Yu.; Baranova, Maria I.

ABSTRACT The article is concerned with artistic properties of one of the staples of Chicano literature, the Klail City Death Trip Series by Rolando Hinojosa, which are viewed from the perspective of the culture of popular laughter. The research draws upon Bakhtin’s theory of carnival and the carnivalesque. The analysis reveals that carnival laughter affects the system of images; it permeates the system of characters and shapes the speech structure of the novels. The dual nature of the comic characters, who work as a destructive force and at the same time are bearers of the truth, encapsulates the culture of carnival laughter. Another representation of the carnivalesque and the grotesque is the masks that Chicanos wear. The grotesque serves as a survival tool for the Chicano community, depicted in the novels, that helps them combat the fear of the inevitable.

ABSTRACT In this work, we analyzed utterances belonging to the editorial genre, produced in Spanish and published by the newspaper El País in its digital edition, during February 2020. We aim to describe this genre just as it manifests in the aforementioned newspaper and to reflect upon the dialogue between the newspaper and the assumed reader. To conduct the analysis, we draw from the dialogical perspective of language, especially from the works of Bakhtin and Vološinov, from which we highlight the concepts of speech genres and architectonic form. Besides the oscillation in the dialogue established between the newspaper and the assumed reader, at times regular, at times occasional, the result reveals an architectonic form based on the assessment of the presence of reading among the participants of the discursive interaction and the importance of using common, frequent and understandable lexical resources to guarantee the dissemination of the newspaper on a worldwide scale.

ABSTRACT The concept of journalistic objectivity is grounded on the notion of “fact,” that means that journalism describes the world out there, like the natural sciences. Throughout the history of journalism, “fact” and “objectivity” have been central concepts for social affirmation and the elaboration of professional procedures. However, journalism does not focus on facts, except for a tiny part of its activity, but on texts, on discourses. It does not report the world; reports sources, reports other people’s information or texts. It is, therefore, fundamentally a discursive activity. This article criticizes the notion of “fact” in journalism and shows by means of analyses of texts from the UOL portal, how journalism is mainly language about language, and not language about the world. Thus, concepts from traditional positivism, from the subject and object dichotomy, do not apply to it. The discursive perspective is much more pertinent.
