  • Between curriculum reforms and pedagogical practices: Ursula Hoadley and the “pedagogy in poverty” Interviews

Galian, Cláudia Valentina Assumpção; Carvalho, Maurício Braz de

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In this interview, Ursula Hoadley, a professor and researcher at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, discusses some of the ideas present in her book Pedagogy in Poverty: lessons from twenty years of curriculum reform in South Africa. The author highlights the explanatory power of Basil Bernstein’s theoretical framework, her main reference both in this and other investigations in the South-African context. The interviewee comments on her main findings in this research, which allowed her to describe and analyze teaching practices developed in the primary years of Elementary School – comprising a twenty-year period with intense curriculum reforms, in the context before and after the apartheid. While bearing the specificities of her country in mind, her considerations locate the aforementioned reforms in the wider context of developing countries – thereby becoming especially relevant to the debates about school curriculum in Brazil.
  • Enacting speech and conquering free time: an interview with Jacques Rancière Entrevistas

Waks, Jonas Tabacof; Carvalho, José Sérgio Fonseca de; Valle, Lílian do; Greco, María Beatriz

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This interview, given in February 2021, explores the links between Jacques Rancière’s thought and the philosophy of education. Initially, Rancière addresses some aspects of his intellectual trajectory, his relationship with the events of May 68 and his research in workers’ archives, which nurtured the fabric of books such as The nights of labor and led him to break with Louis Althusser’s assumptions on the relations between knowledge and politics. Then, Rancière analyzes the reception of The ignorant schoolmaster , which is, according to him, marked by mistaken readings that associate it either to a book about the history of pedagogical thought or to a methodology to be applied. Both readings ignore Joseph Jacotot’s conception of intellectual emancipation and Rancière’s view of the relations between theory and practice. In the discussion on the article School, production, equality , his only text mainly dedicated to what he calls school-form, the philosopher highlights the importance of the different notions of temporality in his thought and questions the school’s ability to promote equality and free time ( skholé ) today, as it has become the finalized institution by excellence, increasingly closer to the logics of hierarchy and inequality. In the end, the dialogue addresses a theme related to the present: the rise of the extreme right in countries like Brazil and the United States of America, marked by what Rancière calls passion for inequality.
  • What ideas do boys and girls construct about their right to privacy at school? Theme Section: Childhood, Politics And Education

    Horn, Axel César

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This paper presents the ideas that boys and girls have about the right to privacy at school, emerging from research conducted in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The boys and girls studied are between the ages of 7 and 12. The article shows which group of ideas were developed by these subjects. In this research, clinical-critical interviews were used as a methodological strategy, based on the presentation of narratives addressing the violation of the right to privacy in schools. The resulting ideas are divided into three main groups: one group of subjects does not recognize this right, another recognizes it, although limited to those situations where this right strains some school characteristic, and a smaller group of subjects recognizes the right independently of the characteristics of the school. The article postulates that the construction of childhood ideas about the right to privacy occurs through hard intellectual work while participating in institutional contexts that are not always careful of children’s personal information. The results exposed facilitate the discussion on the situated construction of social notions by the subjects and the characteristics assumed by development from a psychological constructivist perspective that puts the social context in which the subjects participate at the center. The questions ordering the discussion are as follows: Does conceptual development exist in this type of social ideas? If so, in what terms can it be raised?
  • Social movements, child participation and children’s rights in Brazil Theme Section: Justice And Education: A Necessary Debate

Gouvêa, Maria Cristina Soares de; Carvalho, Levindo Diniz; Silva, Isabel de Oliveira e

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In this paper, the child participation in collective actions in dialog with the academic production about the Movimento Nacional de Meninos e Meninas de Rua (MNMMR) - National Movement of Street Boys and Girls - and the Sem Terrinha - Little Landless -, a collective of children linked to the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) - Landless Workers’ Movement is analyzed. The text seeks to reveal the participation of children in each movement, in the tension between the legal provisions on the rights of the child and their concrete experiences. When seeking to understand the meaning of fulfilling children’s rights in their daily lives, the perspective of rights governance, the relationship with the State and the political dimension stand out in each movement. The intent was to discuss the conceptions of participation and “protagonismo” faced by the hierarchical relations of power between adults and children, both in the organization and management of movements and in the legitimation of discourses. Thus, the work contributes to the theories of the studies of social movements and collective actions, since it demonstrates that the concepts of agency and participation cannot be taken as a priori assumptions, as they demand analysis of the conditions and contradictions for their effectiveness. In this direction, the understanding of the child as a social actor is revealed, in both movements, as a way of overcoming the victim mentality in order to occupy the place of a subject who collectively fights for his/her rights.
  • Is freedom social achievement? Freire and Vygotsky from the perspective of human rights education* Section: Articles

Moreira, Andressa Urtiga; Pulino, Lúcia Helena Cavasin Zabotto

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Freedom as a concept has been investigated by countless areas of human knowledge such as Art/Poetics, Philosophy, Law, Education, Psychology, among others. In the present article, we develop a theoretical essay on freedom emphasizing the contributions of Paulo Freire and Lev Vygotsky from the perspective of education in and for human rights. Therefore, we also discuss some historical, etymological and philosophical contributions of the term in question. In this regard, we highlight the relationship between freedom, education and politics, enduring since antiquity. The relations between education, freedom and politics are also emphasized when dealing with Freire’s contributions, which discuss education as praxis of freedom, considering the capacity for reflection/criticism, mobilization and human creation based on the concept of awareness. Lev Vygotsky, on the other hand, while developing his psychological theory which emphasizes the social constitution of the psyche, reflects on consciousness and freedom, pointing up the emotional dimension. In this bias, based on some approximations between authors, we aim to contribute to the debate regarding freedom, education and democracy or, still, to the creation of more just and solidary social models, which take affectivity and responsibility/commitment as fundamental aspects of freedom itself.
  • Forming recognition: exploring bonds with others at school Theme Section: Justice And Education: A Necessary Debate

Resende, José Manuel; Gouveia, Luís; Beirante, David; Souza, Lucas Freitas de

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article is inserted in an investigation project centered on the problem of hospitality in the way students act in school grounds, viewed through inhospitable and hospitable experiences these actors lived throughout school sociabilities. In the framework of this problem, we intend to observe, in particular, how students who qualify as foreign connect to the school, and, through these bonds, the way they relate to others, in the figure of their peers, within a context of a transformation in school morphology in the last few decades stemming from the rise in the number of foreign students enrolled in the cycles of mandatory schooling in Portugal. Through the theoretical framework commonly designated pragmatic sociology, we intend to analyze how students are engaged in different and compounded regimes of action that seek to make the common in the plural in their respective teaching establishments. For that purpose, we have articulated data from semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations conducted in two public schools within the Portuguese Secondary Education system, with a common trait of hosting large contingents of students originating from contexts of immigration and of different nationalities. Shining a sociological light on several typified spaces that make up the school territory, it is in the exteriorizations by these foreign students when inquired regarding pressing events and about the way in which they inhabit the school that we address and point out the problem of recognition—namely the forming of the recognition of students in their status as foreign and the several experiences in which this recognition is or is not experienced.
  • School justice concepts in UNDP and UNESCO documents Theme Section: Justice And Education: A Necessary Debate

    Rezende, Maria José de

    Abstract in English:

Abstract By reading the UNDP and UNESCO documents, which make up the United Nations system, it is possible to see prospective models - concerning justice, just school, school justice - which are connected to a vast academic literature on education and human rights as well as education and social justice. This is a documentary research which aims to find out in which ways the documents entitled Education for All Global Monitoring Reports (REPTs) of UNESCO and Human Development Reports (RDHs) seek, at the threshold of the 21st century, to certify the effectiveness of education and school as promoters of social, economic and political inclusion of individuals. Their prescriptions are made to States, civil society organizations and political leaders committed to a more just and democratic education. It was emphasized, in the course of the analysis, that the diagnoses and prescriptions, present in the respective documents, as their goal is to reach expressively broad territorial spaces as well as social and political contexts, are not sufficiently concerned with the conflicting processes that can, under specific social, educational and political conditions, make it impossible to expand justice, in general, and school justice, in particular. Due to the diverse nature of the prognoses present in these reports, it is not possible for their formulators to pay attention to the singularities of different societies as a space of innumerable conflicts that tend to increase the difficulties of substantive advances towards increasing school justice.
  • Injustice and associative cunning in occupations of public schools in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 Theme Section: Justice And Education: A Necessary Debate

    Pinto, Ubirajara Santiago de Carvalho

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Based on qualitative data collected in a field research carried out in 2016 in five state public schools in Rio de Janeiro, this article examines the meanings attributed to injustice in public schooling practices and how student action in this context shapes the occupation of schools and current student experiences. The analyzes expanded the understanding of the school as a public arena, revealed the various ways in which political ties are formed, broken and maintained in the school and in occupations, and addressed the deficiencies of public schools and the policies for upper secondary public schools in Rio de Janeiro and other states. The research also revealed the uncertain and difficult associative student effort to expose education problems while living in the occupied school. The situations observed bring to light the need for a habitable public school, the ineffectiveness of the schooling offered to poor Brazilian students and young people, and the difficult struggle faced by them to ensure quality schooling and autonomy in the complex, unequal and plural context of current Brazilian society.
  • The enforcement of the right to quality education as an action of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Pernambuco Seção Temática: Justiça E Educação: Um Debate Necessário

Nascimento, José Almir do; Marques, Luciana Rosa

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The so-called Doctrine of comprehensive protection is based on Article 227 of the 1988 Federal Constitution of Brazil and regulated by the Child and Youth Statute. By this provision, the conceptions of education will be influenced and reconfigured so that the desired protection is guaranteed, placing as joint liability the so-called Guarantee of the Rights of Children and Youth System ( Sistema de Garantia de Direitos da Criança e do Adolescente – SGDCA ), which aims to respond to the demands for rights of children and adolescents. In this sense, the Public Prosecutor’s Office emerges as a co-responsible agent to achieve the right to education, promoting the dignity of the human person. This paper aims to identify the mechanisms and contingencies involved in the working practices of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, to enforce the right to quality of basic education circumscribed in the project of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Education ( Ministério Público pela Educação – MPEduc ) project. This is a cutoff of a doctoral research that, for this text, conducted a review of the national legislation, documents produced within the scope of the project and a bibliography concerning education as a human right. The analysis of the actions resulting from the project found that fulfilling the goals and purposes of the MPEduc is based on the principles of comprehensive protection for children and adolescents, as prescribed in the Child and Youth Statute and in the Brazilian Constitution. In order to accomplish its working functionality, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Pernambuco turns out to be an important ally for the restoration of educational rights, with a view to achieving the desired quality. For this purpose, public civil inquiries and subsequent recommendations for adjustments to education policies are used.
  • The difficult encounter between Justice and Education: discussions about restorative justice Seção Temática: Justiça E Educação: Um Debate Necessário

    Schilling, Flávia; Kowalewski, Daniele

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In the research which this paper is based upon, alongside a study concerning the potential means of learning about the tense and dense relationship between justice and education, we explore the normative matrices arising from public policies that have introduced Restorative Justice in schools in the City of São Paulo. This paper discusses these normative matrices using two foundational documents on Restorative Justice practices, exploring views of conflict, violence, mediation, types of cases, and expectations regarding changes in the school´s everyday life. For this purpose, eight interviews with teachers from two local schools where these projects were implemented have been carried out. In their testimonies, the lack of cases of violence is noteworthy, as well as how Restorative Justice is understood as a mechanism of conflict mediation and a way to deal with discipline at schools. All the interviewees mention that respect is the main purpose of this type of Justice, defined as hope for a better school environment. The goal was to understand the scope of the policies as seen by the individuals involved, as well as how much formalizing micro-justice – in the form of Restorative Justice – boosts (or not) the possibilities of considering the idea of a fair school.
  • Education, redistribution and recognition: contributions of Nancy Fraser’s thought to the justice debate Seção Temática: Justiça E Educação: Um Debate Necessário

    Soares, Swamy de Paula Lima

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article discusses the contributions of American philosopher and activist Nancy Fraser to the debate on redistribution and recognition, analyzing possible repercussions on the relationship between justice and education. The debate presented here has been one of the most fruitful in the social sciences in recent years, with strong impact on social and educational policies. It is all about understanding to what extent policies prioritize more universal aspects, focusing on the concept of equity and its consequences, or actions to recognize identities, an agenda that has gained centrality, including educational discourses stemming from the debate on gender. Known for her role in the debate on feminism, in her analyses Fraser has focused on the organization of discourses and political actions in the context of national and transnational struggles. Based on Fraser’s contributions, we seek to understand the tensions of this debate and the conciliatory perspectives between the two strands. Eventually, we seek to reflect on how redistribution and recognition influence the educational debate, especially in the contemporary social and political context. With a conciliatory tendency, Fraser points the possibility of bridges between politcal actions that enhance the identities of subjects and those that strengthen historical struggles linked to the universalization of rights and fair financial distributions that, in countries like Brazil, are still far from being themes of a distant past.
  • Human rights education in the curricula of undergraduate courses at federal higher education institutions Theme Section: Justice And Education: A Necessary Debate

Silva, Daiane da Luz; Caputo, Maria Constantina; Veras, Renata Meira

Abstract The Brazilian law provides for the need of human rights education in both basic and higher education. To this end, it is necessary to include it in basic teacher training, since these professionals are responsible for developing and implementing actions and programs of formal and non-formal education at different levels. In view of this fact, this study aims to analyze the curricula of undergraduate courses offered by federal higher education institutions in order to identify how Human Rights Education plays its role in these curricula according to Resolution n. 01/2012 of the National Board of Education (CNE). This is a descriptive-evaluative documental study which analyzed syllabi of the 38 top-rank undergraduate curricula in 21 federal higher education institutions according to the Preliminary Course Evaluation framework of 2017. It included 11 areas: Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Physical Education, Philosophy and Pedagogy, Languages, Visual Arts and Music. The analysis conducted showed that the institutions are not neglectful in this regard, considering that 36 curricula examined address Human Rights and can be found in at least one course of each area. However, only 21% of the curricula of the fields investigated offer a specific mandatory course in the area, contrary to what is determined by the CNE. Thus, conclusion is that Human Rights related themes should not be restricted to a single course or treated in an isolate manner, but included in a wider array of undergraduate courses in order to make curriculum more interdisciplinary and inclusive.
  • Injustices experienced and demands for recognition in a public school: expressions of High School students Seção Temática: Justiça E Educação: Um Debate Necessário

    Botler, Alice Miriam Happ

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This paper seeks to examine the expression of High School students regarding the injustices experienced in the daily life of the democratic school and its resulting demands. This is part of a research that aimed to analyze the conceptions that school subjects have of justice, which is associated with situations of conflict and violence in the school organization. The theoretical debate deals with concepts such as plural justice and school practices. The case study via focus groups with High School students from a public school in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, generated debate among the subjects, whose manifestations indicate the strong presence of discrimination, especially from a religious and racial point of view, as aspects that awaken the schoolchildren’s feeling of injustice. It is concluded that this feeling leads them to show resistance, as well as enhances their identification with the specific school universe. Students demand recognition of their religious, ethnic and racial identities, which are silenced in everyday school life. The institution, in turn, fails to avoid the debate about issues that are so present there and loses opportunities to mobilize students with a view to creating a closer relationship with the school.
  • Academic production of women teachers in the field of theology: subjection or ethical subjectivation? Artigos

    Furlin, Neiva

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The presence of women professors in higher education has been recently achieve and has been consolidated amid challenges, especially in fields of knowledge that are dominated exclusively by men, as is the case of theology. Here, women need to produce political strategies by means of situated practices to assert themselves as knowledgeable, overcoming gender barriers of the male symbolic order. Thus, this study aims to analyze the academic practices of women professors, specifically in supervising academic studies and publications, showing the meanings produced for the process of ethical subjectivation or self-agency. The study is based on the narratives of 14 professors who worked in three Catholic institutions. The contents of the narratives are analyzed from a feminist theoretical framework and gender studies, with a post-structuralist perspective and definitions that involve relationships of power and its effects, and the processes of resistance and ethical subjectivation. Results indicate that the academic action of teachers produces a counter-memory effect to a feminine model of the masculine symbolic order. For this, they interact with the existing dynamics of power, neutralizing the facts of a globalizing knowledge, as a political strategy of subjectivation or ethical self-agency.
  • The issue of citizenship under the eyes of the indigenous people in the Indigenous Land Cobra Grande, Santarém/PA Articles

Silva, Messias Furtado da; Diniz, Renato Eugênio da Silva; Alencar, Joelma Cristina Parente Monteiro

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article discusses the issue of citizenship from the perspective of indigenous people from the Cobra Grande Indigenous Land (TICG, abbreviation in portuguese) who participate in a teacher training course. The question investigated is how indigenous people, who are deeply involved in the Kariwa culture, and having to fight for their rights at all times, including the right to remain indigenous, see the issue of citizenship. The objective of the study was to identify what the indigenous people of TICG understand by the word citizenship and how they perceive the exercise of it in the daily life of the villages. Methodologically, the research fits as an ethnographic case study in education, without, however, being totally reduced to the method, as we investigated, based on a participatory process in which the interlocutors were also researchers. The research process involved preliminary discussions, preparation, application and evaluation of action projects and semi-structured interviews. The results show that the indigenous are concerned with the impact of the TICG indigenous contact with the Kariwa culture and the consequences of this contact for the indigenous way of being and living. The survey also revealed that indigenous people are aware of their rights and understand citizenship both in the right-duty binomial and as an instrument to fight for the preservation of the culture and traditions of the villages.
  • Researches on the effects of neoliberalization of public higher education in Latin America Artículos

    Castelao-Huerta, Isaura

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article reviews the literature published between 1995 and 2019 addressing the effects of neoliberal policies being implemented in Latin American public higher education. It accounts for the ways university budget cuts as well as adopting performance evaluation systems resulted in defunding institutions and made professor posts precarious, which harmfully affected education. It is underlined that the imposition of these policies has faced resistance from social movements, and were also resisted by creating institutions with pedagogical principles other than the neoliberal ones. Selecting the literature presented was carried out by searching databases for the terms Neoliberalism and Latin America, Neoliberalism and University and Latin America, Neoliberalism and Higher Education and Latin America, in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. While revising the works, which includes articles, book chapters, books, dissertations, and web pages, the major discussion and results of each work were identified and systematized. Subsequently, the main themes highlighted by the authors were established. The conclusion found was the necessity of new qualitative studies, which would lead to an in-depth understanding how neoliberalism was intersected in particular ways with certain social categories in order to shape the experiences of people inside the universities.
  • Mediating factors in the professional development process of higher education professors Artigos

    Almeida, Marta

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The article focuses on the professional development processes of higher education professors, looking especially at the teaching dimension. It aims to capture different profiles of pedagogical orientation in a group of teachers from three higher education institutions located in Portugal, in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley area. Also, it seeks to understand which factors (endogenous and exogenous) contribute to a greater distance or a greater proximity to a learning-oriented pedagogical profile. Interviews and bibliographic review have been the starting point to build a questionnaire with three scales, namely, levels of involvement and personal commitment to the profession, teaching concerns, and factors of change. The results reveal the presence of distinct pedagogical orientation profiles, with one group showing a more primary stage of professional development, basically centered on themselves and on their scientific proficiency; the other group, with a higher degree of development, and hegemonically oriented towards students and their learning; and a third group, without a dominant focus, which apparently brings together teachers influenced by their careers requirements, particularly regarding research and scientific production.
  • Retextualizing the literary text of science communication The periodic table in the chemistry teaching Articles

Targino, Arcenira Resende Lopes; Giordan, Marcelo

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Several studies have suggested that approaching texts of science communication and literary texts in Sciences teaching can pose a major contribution, since besides of allowing reflections on values and attitudes, it can also help to construct concepts, thus contributing to achieve scientific literacy. Having such perspective in mind, it was elaborated and applied a didactic sequence (DS) denominated Chemical Elements in nature and in the society: the socioenvironmental disaster of the Doce River, which was applied in the first grade of High School in a public school in the city of São Paulo. After analyzing and selecting some literary texts of science communication (LTSC), excerpts of some works have been addressed in different teaching activities. In this article, we analyzed discursive interactions observed in the classroom after approaching some chapters of the LTSC The Periodic Table by Primo Levi. Among the results of the application, it can be pointed out the way that both students and the teacher retextualized portions of the work, and moments of initiation and assessment of interaction by the students were observed, a not common discursive interaction pattern in the classroom. Furthermore, while addressing LTSC chapters in the classroom, it was verified the pedagogic aim of the metacognition, since it was noted discursive sequences, where it happened reflections on what is related to the properties of chemical elements. Those results suggest the didactic potentialities of the LTSC in a Chemistry classroom.
  • Youth and Adult Education within the municipal sphere in Minas Gerais Articles

Silva, Fernanda Aparecida Oliveira Rodrigues; Soares, Leôncio

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The expansion of the subnational responsabilities towards basic education questions the protagonism of the local power since the 1990s. Youth and Adult Education (YAE) is part of the agenda of the municipal commitments and awakens attention as to the forms of care that have been carried out in order to fulfill everyone’s right to education. The article presents data from a study that was concerned with mapping and understanding educational offers to youths and adults undertaken by ten municipalities in Minas Gerais. The quantitative-qualitative research produced data from meetings with YAE managers, research seminars, classroom monitoring, interviews with managers, teachers and students. These data dialogue with literature in the area of the post 1988 Federal Constitution. The analysis of the data, in light of the convergences and singularities, highlights the recurring statement that “YAE will end” and resonances of the statement “I fell into YAE” coming from the research collaborators. Educational managers recognize that Youth and Adult Education has its own characteristics. It is evinced that this recognition alone has not been sufficient to support an YAE proposal, which attends to the provision of an educator’s position through a public selection process and continuing education focused on the specificities of youths, adults and the elderly. At the end, it makes recommendations stemming from the implications to the teacher’s profile as a professional who claims to be able to: “dive into YAE”.
  • The constitution of a new indigenous social subject: Guarani people, formal education and intercultural capital Artículos

    Nuñez, Yamila Irupé

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Guarani students´ access to Higher Education Institutions (HEI) is a recent phenomenon both in Brazil and Argentina. As members of a group which occupy a dominated position in social space, Guarani people have scarce possibilities of accessing and remaining in the higher education system. Their presence in such places expose numerous issues related to the unequal conditions of access, permanence and completion that the formal education system pose for indigenous populations, and possibly for members of other disinherited social groups in both countries. Based on an intense anthropological fieldwork, this paper aims to further increase our knowledge of this phenomenon, taking into account the experiences of the Guarani students that play a leading role in it, as well as the different institutions engaged throughout the process. By making use of a narrative style, educational trajectories of two Guarani students are presented, one from the province of Misiones (Argentina) and the other from the State of Paraná (Brazil), in order to convey some signs of how Guarani students experience the passage through the formal education system of the dominant society.
  • The practice of silence as an educational tool: guidelines for competence-based education Articles

    Dulčić, Francisco José Lería

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The characteristics of contemporary educational environments, abundant in activities and often-excessive use of digital technologies, highlight the need for providing psychophysical balance to the student inner experience, current situation that stimulates teachers’ interest to the consideration of silence as an educative act, crucial to any less saturated, and more balanced formative process. Current scientific literature is reviewed here about silence as an enhancer of neurophysiology, e.g.: on neurogenesis and default network inductor; and psychosocial development, e.g.: on self-regulative attentional skills and/or language processing quality; suggesting it already involves the preconditions to be systematically introduced as a pedagogical tool, a task still to be done and to which this paper tributes. For this goal, a brief review on the contemplative orientation in teaching and learning is exposed as a theoretical and practical framework interested in silence as a tool of learning, psychological growth, and social transformation, through awareness development and relational-ethical behavior. Some implications are described then for competence-based education, and the possibility of articulating the practice of silence with the development of procedural competences. Finally, some limitations are addressed in order to raise awareness of the best path to tread in promoting silence and its benefits for teaching and learning environments
  • Precarious work in Federal Institutes: an analysis of the processes of intensification of verticalized work Artigos

Araújo, José Júlio César do Nascimento; Mourão, Arminda Rachel Botelho

    Abstract in English:

This article makes a review of the concept of precarious work. Our method of exposure and analysis follows the approach of dialectical historical materialism. Our choice of sources followed the bibliographic and field research, with the help of thematic-category content analysis. Some precarious elements of the teaching work in Federal Institutes (IFs) have been pointed out, such as the fetish of the new career in the IFs, the verticalization and the intensification of teachers’ work. It is discussed here that there is in the institution a polyvalence required by the verticalization of the work. This intensification makes the teaching work more precarious since it requires greater mental effort from the teacher, his/her knowledge of various processes; his/her adaptability of its practice to the diversity of classes in which it operates; diverse emotional work; intensification of its logic of action, of attention and control; longer preparation time of classes and contents covered in the classroom. Thus, the porosity of work, the time needed for reflection and the time of non-work are swallowed by the tasks of preparation of the work. Finally, the article points out the dimensions of praxis that the precariousness category must present in the field of interpretation and struggle of/for teaching work. Our conclusion is that the mediations between theory and praxis must regard precariousness as a political term, a kaleidoscopic process which aims to apprehend the constant exploration of the new quantum of work, without changing its status, in addition to the subjective reflections of suffering, the teachers’ illnesses caused by constant transformations imposed on the organization of work. Thus, in the IFs, the process of verticalization of work makes the teaching practice precarious.
  • Professional integration in teaching: the experience of former PIBID students* Articles

Farias, Isabel Maria Sabino de; Silva, Silvina Pimentel; Cardoso, Nilson de Souza

    Abstract in English:

Abstract We discuss teacher training of former students of a teaching initiation program in their first years of professional integration. We begin with the assertion that, generally, teachers who are more broadly prepared and certified are more successful in teaching, instigating questions about how beginner teachers, from differentiated learning opportunities during initial training, experience the first years of teaching. The analysis turns to facts about the professional integration of former students of teaching initiation programs, specifically from the Institutional Program of Initiation to Teaching Scholarship (PIBID, in Portuguese) in Ceará. Methodology involved carrying out a survey with 263 former members of PIBID from two Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in Ceará. They are young adults with pre-vocational socialization, whose learning took place in a school trajectory marked by curricular experience in the public network.Effective teaching practice prevails among those surveyed (75.6%). Participating in PIBID allowed future teachers in this study, during initial training and professional integration, to face the profession’s dilemmas more constructively, providing elements to recognize themselves as capable to endure challenges. Among them prevails a strong identification with teaching, except for a small group, who discover, with that experience and their first years in the profession, that they prefer to invest their effort into a profession that will grant them more advantages. Even in the face of adversities inherent to the demands of the career, they acknowledge being more prepared to confront the dilemmas in the first years of teaching.
  • Historical consciousness and social representation: a study on the perceptions of young students about Brazil Articles

Reis, Aaron Sena Cerqueira; Silva, Joilson Pereira da

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In this article, we analyze the perceptions of young students about Brazil, starting from the dialogue between the historical consciousness and social representations theories. Through the production of written narratives, we aim to identify the worldviews which our participants use to guide themselves over time and to envision their future. Therewith, we intend to value the mental constructions of the subjects in the school context contributing to the strengthening of research in the field of Teaching of History. This study was carried out in a public state school located in the Butantã neighborhood, in the city of São Paulo/SP, Brazil, in 2017. It was part of it 127 students, between the ages of 14 and 18, males and females, distributed in five groups of the 1st grade of High School. The data was obtained through a questionnaire and analyzed accordingly with the assumptions of Grounded theory with the help of IRAMUTEQ. This enabled the construction of a dendrogram composed of three classes which implied in the identification of representations about the present time (class 1), articulations with the past (class 2), and projections for the future (class 3). Under the results, we evidenced ideas related to the perception of a country in crisis, with a prejudiced past and with a future, contradictorily, promising. Once worked in class, these ideas can contribute to the formation of the historical consciousness of the students.
  • Licentiate degree in Rural Education at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil: trajectory, organization and functioning Articles

Leonarde, Charlinni da Rocha; Simões, Renata Duarte; Vieira, Alexandro Braga; Paiva, Jacyara Silva de

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The article seeks to understand the history of creating a teaching degree in rural education at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The course aims to train education professionals to work in areas of knowledge (languages and human and social sciences) for the second stage of elementary education and for secondary education, based on the principle that rural education is a collective construction as a practice of a liberating dialogue, in the process of which students and teachers construct themselves and are constructed by others as autonomous historical subjects capable of reading the world. To this end, the article uses authors who have been dedicated to producing knowledge about rural education and the training of teachers to work in rural schools. As a theoretical-methodological approach, it uses the assumptions of historical research, performing analysis of the course’s structuring documents and conducting interviews with university professionals who worked on the preparation of the training proposal. As a result, the study shows that rural education is a historic struggle for social movements; that the Federal University of Espírito Santo sought to constitute actions and negotiations for the implementation of the course; and that the training of teachers to work in rural schools is an action that, if contemplated, impacts the right to education for the social groups that deal with and live on the land.
  • Evasion in higher education: definitions and trajectories Article

Coimbra, Camila Lima; Silva, Leonardo Barbosa e; Costa, Natália Cristina Dreossi

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The evasion phenomenon is considered one of the Ministry of Education main concerns and seen as a target to be tackled or an index to be reduced. The term appears in some public policies for Higher Education, such as REUNI (BRASIL, 2007), SINAES (BRASIL, 2004) and PNAES (BRASIL, 2010). However, the bibliographic research done in order to map a larger search called: Evasion, retention and permanence: social inclusion and the right to education has revealed that expert analysis and official documents are showing divergences and/or insufficiencies and brought together phenomena of different kind. The divergence has been based on criteria that almost never differentiated by causality or motivation for loss of bond with the institution. Indeed, the purpose of this article moves towards pointing out the limits of the current definitions about evasion in Federal Higher Education, reinforcing the importance of definitions based on causalities and, finally, reaching an appropriate definition of evasion for the formulation and evaluation of policies for Federal Higher Education. For this, it was decided to make a mapping of the bibliographic production on the subject, a brief retrieval of official documents about the topic and the specialized bibliography and then launch a suggestion for the debate about evasion, in the understanding of this phenomenon as a social indicator.
  • Profile and perceptions of future rural educators upon entering Public University Artigos

Gisloti, Laura Jane; Santos, Dalva Melo dos; Santos, Cíntia Melo dos; Silva, Sandra Procópio da

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The objective of this study is to gather antecedents, motivations and perceptions of teachers who will study and attain their bachelor’s degree in Rural Education (LEDUC) at the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD). From research instruments of mixed quantitative and qualitative character (a questionnaire structured with open and closed questions and a semi-structured interview) and the analysis of the content of two speeches obtained, we discuss and analyze them in the context of two fundamental dimensions: the profile of women students who are looking to take Rural Education and their perception when it comes to its impact on their lives after they had been admitted to the university. The women´s profile of women shows they are under 28 years old, rural residents, single and childless. They attended high school in rural schools and found in LEDUC the possibility of entering higher education due to several factors, including the Alternation Pedagogy method, in which the teaching-learning process alternates between time at the university and time at the community. This allows them to study according to their objective conditions. These women are still not professionally inserted in rural schools, they identify themselves as students, they have faced gender-related challenges and they believe the course has changed their relationships with the non-country life, professional life (35%), domestic life (31%) and social life (30%). We reaffirm that the entry of women in this course favors them to take other roles in society, making them recognize themselves as agents that help the construction of Rural Education at the university and in their communities because of their appreciation of their way of life and the associated knowledge they possess, in addition to contributing to the transformation of the patriarchal culture that is present in peasant culture.
  • Gender issues in Plato and Euripides: ancient bodies and gender performativity Articles

    Silva, Vânia; Cornelli, Gabriele

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The current article draws on Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory to analyse two classical text of Greek Antiquity – the Bacchae by Euripides and The Republic by Plato. The concept of gender performativity will be used to illustrate analogously even anachronically, how much the Greek imaginary, in spite of being temporally distant, can fruitfully contribute to, what we would identify as one of the most sophisticated contemporary theories in contemporary gender studies, both as this imaginary emerges from the literary discourse of the tragedy or the discourse of philosophy. This will allow us to show how the two above mentioned texts can contribute to the contemporary debate on the critical theory of gender identity, as these are fixed in performative acts that make gender conform to anatomic sex, limiting gender to the two possibilities of masculine or feminine. Considering the historical context and the question that are specific to the world of Ancient Greece, our analysis will permit us to cast light, in particular, on the strategies that Plato and Euripides drew on to disrupt the gender norms of the polis. Examining the texts allows us to argue that in antiquity, as well as in the contemporary world, albeit in different ways, discussions of gender relations are fitted primarily by the political discourse regarding these relations.
  • Creative lines in a history class: the paradox of thinking faced with the dispositif of banality Articles

    Pacievitch, Caroline; Pereira, Nilton Mullet

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article discusses history class as an opportunity to consider and problematize time, based on the creations of teachers. This opportunity is constructed in mediations with youth and their cultures, with historic knowledge and with sentient issues. In times when common public opinion appears to have an important position, when attacks on history classes multiply and when there is a deliberate process of devalorization of thinking and scientific production, particularly in the field of history, we propose to problematize what we call the dispositif of banalization, based on ideas from Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault. Our objective is to reflect on history classes, using scenes of practices of student teachers and literature from the field as sources for research and producing knowledge. For this article we have selected a class that problematizes imaginaries constructed about Ancient Egypt. The connection that we establish is that, while the dispositif of banality produces and reproduces perspectives, readings and relations in society in general, the history classroom creates a refuge for thinking by opening a space “between” the past and future – a space of imagination that allows the creative re-encounter with others.
  • Anti-racist education in the political and academic context: tensions and displacements Articles

    Silva, Marcos Antonio Batista da

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The purpose of this article is to discuss the actions of social movements, particularly the Brazilian black movement, and Afro-Peruvian social movements in Peru targeting anti-racist education. Attention is drawn to the contemporary discussion about race and anti-racism in the production of knowledge and in the public educational policies in Brazil and in Peru. In addition to an approach to the use of ethnic-racial categories in census contexts in both countries. A comprehensive way of addressing the issue starts with thinking about the dimensions involved in the phenomenon subject to measurement and how they are operationalized by the State and by society. This work is based on the theoretical perspective of contemporary authors covering ethnic-racial relations and educational inequalities. In methodological terms, Teun Van Dijk´s critical analysis of discourse is utilized. The first part presents a discussion about the social construction of race under the standards of domination and power. The second part proposes a discussion about ethnic-racial categories in the census contexts of the Brazilian and the Peruvian societies. It is understood that such categories may be culturally and politically elaborated drawing from complex historical processes. The third part addresses reflections on the emergence of some anti-racist education in the contemporary societies with an emphasis on Brazil and Peru. The article concludes with the idea that it is essential to dialogue with alternatives that have been formulated by the black social movements, especially in the Brazilian and Peruvian societies, which raise questions regarding the production and dissemination of the Eurocentric knowledge, unveiling racism and taking power relations, especially those occurring in the educational realm, into consideration.
  • Body erasures: education, body enunciate and resistances Article

Casteleira, Rodrigo Pedro; Maio, Eliane Rose

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Bodies are still announced, enunciated, analyzed, studied and (con)formed in several instances, mainly in school areas. The main goal of this text is to reflect on the body as enunciated in order to later understand a possible practice within the educational universe: the desenunciation. The term education in this research is not restricted to formal and/or informal teaching institutions, but all the relationships articulated in society that represent teaching processes. The intention is to denote how much the bodies, even more of transvestite people, are linked to notions of power, which are revealed from speeches, laws, interdicts, constructions, regulations etc. The methodological proposal was structured according to analyses of bibliographic material, such as theses, books and articles; based on the Foucaultian reference and theorizations that dialogue with it. The schools, or even non-school areas, still need to reinvent themselves, rework, modify, and point out tacit, egalitarian and empowering body expressions. Thus, the central question of this work is to understand how the joints crossed by the State, under the category of desenunciation, deprive the subjects of their specificities so that there is only an erased nucleus, such as a data or a number. The research concludes that the structures used by the educational systems, here thought of according to systems anchored in the desenunciation, deprive, for example, the transvestites of their existences, in a bellicose and articulated way in order to maintain control over the norm.
  • The debate about democratization of public education and the thesis of radical democratic management of the school Artigos

    Moreira, Carlos Felipe Nunes

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In view of the extensive accumulation of interpretations on the democratic management of education in Brazil, the objective of this article is to present a theoretical-methodological management proposal that guarantees the analytical inseparability between politics and economics, in which the socialization of power constitutes nuclear mediation. Based on the intellectual production of 11 leading reference authors on democratic management in the country - widely used by researchers who have worked on the theme in recent years - theoretical and political trends have been identified which, from the transition period towards a new Constitution in the 1980s to the present day, they have been guiding the reflections about the object. The results of the study show in the bibliography reviewed the need for further development with regard to the solidification process of an antagonistic educational project, articulated with the movement to overcome the capitalist order. The emergence of a new mode of production and social reproduction in which the integral intellectual-cultural formation of the human being is possible demands, immediately, to intensify the struggle for the socialization of the political-economic power. In this regard, taking as a starting point the maximum reached in the previous syntheses and antitheses and through the exploration of its contradictions, the thesis of radial democratic management seeks to provide indispensable mediations to the processes that point to an alternative educational project that breaks with capitalism which is not limited to hegemonic ideas of bourgeois democracy. It is a management that is guided by an unattainable political dimension in this society, but that is worth of teleological reference to the collective processes of criticism, expansion and overcoming of the democratic management currently possible in the capitalist order.
  • Education, teacher training and multiliteracies: articulating projects of research-training Articles

Silva, Obdália Santana Ferraz; Anecleto, Úrsula Cunha; Santos, Sirlaine Pereira Nascimento dos

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This study aims to discuss teacher training, within the scope of Basic Education, creating opportunities for teachers to (re)think and (res)signify their pedagogical practices, considering the current sociocultural context, to demand professionals who appropriate the diversity of languages, cultures and hypermedia that make up multiliteracies. It is a macro project that articulates different projects, developed in postgraduate programs (stricto sensu) of a public university, which raise themes such as cultural diversity, multimodality, multi-semiosis, digital convergence, articulation between teaching, learning and research, within the scope of teacher training. In this context the main question of this study focusses on the following way: How teachers have been prepared to work on the different types of existing literacies, even which involve digital technologies, related to the demands and challenges proposed by the (multi) literacies? As methodology, we opted for research-training, collaborative, through formative meetings based on reflective sessions. Results of researches carried out between 2017 and 2018 lead to the conclusion that public projects and policies aimed at teacher training will need, in the face of given changes by the digital culture and multiliteracies, to think about teaching training and pedagogical practices, based on a teaching conception that, effectively, stablish a relationship between knowledge and student’s daily life; between human development processes and the possibilities of learning offered by the literate culture agencies, considering the guidelines for an inclusion of the diversity as a basic principle of citizenship.
  • Curriculum policies for vocational education and teaching work* Article

Soares Júnior, Néri Emílio; Borges, Lívia Freitas Fonseca

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article investigates the process of implementation of the current National Curricular Guidelines for Technical and Vocational Education of High School Level (Statement NCE/CBE n. 11/2012 and Resolution NCE/CBE n. 06/2012) in a vocational education institution in the state of Goiás. For this, a case study was carried out, which data survey procedures were documental analysis, observation, semi-structured interview, and instruction to the double. The documents analyzed were related to the curricular policies and the levels of the curricular decision in the school institution. The managers and teachers participated as investigation subjects. The implementation of the curricular guidelines has been made from actions of the Dean, such as remodeling of pedagogical projects and curricular matrices of technical courses; building a program of continuing education for teachers and administrative staff; organizing and developing scientific events; conducting a pilot work of curricular reformulation and dialogues between management representatives and teachers of different campuses. However, these actions have had little effect on teachers’ practices. Since the development of their work, they are influenced by factors such as personal and socioeconomic dimension of the work, pedagogical work organization, students, disciplinary field, action area, teachers’ values, and professional experience, among others.
  • Gramsci, education and unitary school* Articles

    Martins, Marcos Francisco

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This paper is the product of research on the fundamentals of education; it presents the results of investigations on the contributions of Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937). This text follows on from other publications on specific aspects of the Italian author’s legacy, but here summarizing the formulations he produced, specifically on education and school, to ascertain his theoretical-methodological identity. In the first part of the text, there are biographical data and the specifics of Gramsci’s writings, which are followed by an explanation of his conception of human being, to better understand the main contribution he left on the basic level of education: the unitary school, presented in the final part of the textual structure. Bibliographic research was the utilized methodology, which was developed mainly by the analysis of Gramsci’s miscellaneous and special notebooks, particularly 1 and 4, and 12 and 22, because in these maturity writings the Italian communist most carefully dealt with education and school. In addition to the “prison notebooks” and letters by Gramsci, texts by prominent commentators were also investigated, to detect the author’s concept in question about the basic school. The conclusion is that the presented formulations on education and school are up-to-date expressions of the legacy of original Marxism and, therefore, cannot be confused with liberal conceptions, which implied educational proposals foreign to the unitary school.
  • The educational agenda of the World Bank in times of fiscal adjustment and pandemic Articles

    Pereira, João Márcio Mendes

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article discusses the educational agenda of the World Bank from a historical perspective, asking whether it has undergone any changes due to the outbreak of contamination on a global scale caused by the new coronavirus (Sars-cov2), responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the institution’s documentation and taking as a reference the Brazilian case, it is argued that no change has occurred in its neoliberal nature, in force since the 1980s. At the same time that the Bank supported the measures of urgency adopted by governments of developing countries (clients of the institution) to soften the impacts of the pandemic – which necessarily results in an increase in public expenditure –, the institution continues to condition the release of funds on the adoption of neoliberal policies, as well as maintaining the normative primacy of the fiscal adjustment as the basis of action for governments of these countries in the post-pandemic period. Initially, the article presents and problematizes the different activities carried out by the Bank (the granting of loans, advice, technical assistance, advocacy in favor of determined agenda, the linking of multilateral initiatives and economic research). Following this, it analyzes the historical evolution of the educational agenda of the institution, in light of its more general political program. Finally, it discusses the action of the Bank in Brazilian education, based on an examination of the organization’s loan portfolio and strategic documents for Brazil, covering the period 2017-20, to which its educational agenda was subordinated.
  • Involvement of students with ASD in bullying according to multiple informants Articles

Falcão, Carla Samya Nogueira; Stelko-Pereira, Ana Carina; Alves, Dayse Lôrrane Gonçalves

    Abstract in English:

Abstract There are few studies on people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their involvement in school bullying in Brazil, especially because many of these children have been enrolled in regular schools. In this cross-sectional analytical study, we investigate how students with ASD experienced bullying situations, according to themselves, their parents and their Physical Education (PE) teachers. We also investigate how much they know about this phenomenon. We interviewed a total of 133 individuals, 63 parents (97% female), 51 PE teachers (56.9% male and 78% public school teachers) and 19 students with ASD (18 male). We selected the participants from a special education institution in Fortaleza, Ceará. Our team performed structured interviews according to each category of participant. PE teachers showed a greater understanding of bullying than parents and students, but five teachers naturalized the problem by calling it “roughhousing”. A total of 30 parents (47.6%) claimed not to know whether the child had experienced bullying, while 33 (52.4%) were aware; 76% identified the child as a victim, 21% as a bully-victim, and 3% as a bully. According to the teachers, 53% of students with ASD were not involved in bullying situations, while 47% of teachers reported that special-needs children were victims. Finally, 63% of the students declared themselves victims. These differences were statistically relevant. Our results indicate that there is a need for educational programs for the entire school community in order to prevent bullying and promote the effective inclusion of students with ASD.
  • Non-formal education: history and criticism of a social form Articles

    Catini, Carolina

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article presents a research that considered as a hypothesis a critical interpretation of the history of non-formal education in Brazil. Here we address its emergence linked to a conservative project to mitigate the strength of popular education during the period of the military dictatorship. The investigation started from such indications and from a methodological proposal of political sociology that refers to the study of hegemonic social forms to search for links of such process in the history of non-formal education. The following presentation discusses the results of an investigation based on bibliographic and documental research. On the one hand, this process is specified by the replacement of adult education programs developed in the early 1960s, amid popular culture movements, which had Paulo Freire as a reference, by the institution of Mobral (Brazilian Movement of Literation). On the other hand, the examination of UNESCO’s documents, especially from the texts of Philip Coombs, considered the pioneer in the use of the term non-formal education, as a recommendation to overcoming a crisis in education. In both movements, national and international, it is possible to identify the genesis of this social form configured by the association between the State, private entities, and civil society. This form changes the agents and purposes of an education aimed at the popular classes. The prevalence of this social form appears at other key moments in the history of non-formal education, especially in the 1990s, with the growth of the third sector, NGOs and business foundations and institutes.
  • Campinas’ curricular guidelines for physical education: what is at stake? Articles

Ferreira, Maísa; Nunes, Mário Luiz Ferrari

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This study presents the assumption that the curriculum is not only an organization of subjects, nor a list of contents to be taught. It considers that the curriculum involves different actions of the educational process, from forms about the structure of school functioning, passing through the architecture and distribution of school times and spaces, the selection of knowledge, the organization and offer of teaching activities, the correction of body postures, to the speeches that end up saying what is expected or not from the subjects of education. Besides this, since it is a State policy, the process of selecting what will constitute the curriculum includes the project of subjects who will be educated for society. Thus, this article is part of a broader research on curriculum policies promoted by the Municipal Secretariat of Campinas. It takes as its object of investigation the municipality’s Curricular Guidelines for physical education. It analyzes the conceptions regarding the object of knowledge of physical education and the goals announced for the component. It considers document analysis as a method and uses curriculum theories and studies on curriculum policies to understand its effects. The results indicate that the Guidelines for the component present epistemological and didactic inconsistencies. This probably means that this situation will cause difficulties for the teaching practice and, thus, the dispute for the control of the teacher education policy agenda will intensify, favoring neoliberal political rationality.
  • An analysis of the anthropology of education at the Brazilian Anthropology Meetings (2000-2020) Articles

    Oliveira, Amurabi

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The field of anthropology of education is in the process of consolidation in Brazil, having expanded considerably in recent years. In this article, I carry out an analysis of the anthropology of education in Brazil based on the activities developed in the last Brazilian Anthropology Meetings (2000-2020). I point to the presence of activities related to education in all editions of the analyzed period, perceiving a certain divide in terms of thematic: on the one hand, those related to the issues of teaching anthropology and the training of anthropologists, on the other, those related to a broader discussion about the anthropology of educational practices. This division reflects, to a certain extent, the different research agendas that anthropologists of education have. In the case of those linked institutionally to the Departments of Anthropology/Social Sciences, there is a greater concern with the theme of teaching anthropology and the training of anthropologists/social scientists, while those linked to the Faculties of Education are closer to a discussion about learning spaces, with emphasis on ethnographic research in the school context. I seek to capture how the agents mobilize themselves in the formation of anthropology of education in Brazil and how this reveals tensions and disputes involving mainly the institutional fragmentation of this field.
  • Editorial profiles and the construction of meanings in physical education printed materials (1932-1960) Articles

Cassani, Juliana Martins; Ferreira Neto, Amarílio; Santos, Wagner dos

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The objective of this study is to comprehend the strategies utilized by publishers in order to turn the periodical press devoted to teaching and techniques as a means to disseminate and persuade teachers concerning the introduction of physical education in the school curricula. The sources are the editorials from five magazines published between 1932 and 1960, whose common characteristic was to provide those working on teaching physical education with didactic-pedagogical guidance. Theoretical-methodological assumptions of the study are the concepts of struggles for representations, strategies, tactics, and the perspective of analysis of the printed materials. Interpreting sources dangles towards the disputes and negotiations among the publishers of periodicals, especially among groups of civil and military writers, as it benefitted the publication of didactic-pedagogical guidance based on a diversity of methods and exercises. In an environment where educational policies were consolidated, certain magazines were concerned about unifying the teaching of physical education, in a movement that acknowledged the theoretical bases and the pedagogical orientation already established in the area. Analysis reveals that periodicals fulfilled their purpose, namely, contribute to make physical education a school subject as there the professional work is this area had grown stronger through teacher training in higher education in the civil domain. This way of organizing the area allowed to devise a printout whose characteristics led to the transition from a press dedicated to teaching and technique to a press dedicated to research, providing the bases for scientific periodicals covering physical education.
  • Ab(normal) students and marginality in Chilean secondary schools: what teachers are saying Artículos

Doña, Alberto Moreno; García, Enrique Rivera; Arévalo, Sergio Toro

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article is the result of a research focusing on understanding and interpreting the perceptions that mentor-teachers in the 4th grade of secondary school have built in relation to students who are in the “not-being” area, in formal educational institutions. These students are those who are not considered to be within the normality concept that rules in the educational institutions. With a paradigmatic interpretative approach and a qualitative methodology, 30 teachers were interviewed (all of them mentor-teachers of 4th grade in Chilean secondary school and with different features depending on variety of professional and personal criteria). With the help of NVivo 11.0 software, a content analysis (mainly inductive) was carried out. The conclusion is that teachers not only do not question the normality and abnormality conceptualization in which the school system operates, but also they use it in an acritical way to classify students. Academic results are the main factor for students to be considered close to or far from what teachers think as normal. Human factors are objectified and instrumentalized and are considered duties that should guide what students do. Teachers usually think that the family is the basis for understanding why these students are less normal.
  • Start from the middle of making: recompose Sociology teaching Articles

    Schweig, Graziele Ramos

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Considering contemporary debate on the ontological turn, this article seeks to discuss possible implications of its assumptions to understand Sociology teaching practices in school. Education and teaching are conceived by detaching from epistemological debate (how to know) and approaching to that of ontology (how reality is produced), as a way to open a field of attention to the materiality of knowledge practices. This perspective is explored having as a triggering the fieldnote of a pedagogical planning situation observed during an ethnographic research carried out in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. As the controversies contained in the narrative unfold, they show the limitations of representational language to describe Sociology teaching in high school. Therefore, one might wonder: what kind of teaching would be possible when we assume that there is no world - nor Sociology - ready before everyday practices? Thus, as the article explores the tracks indicated in the fieldnote itself, it leads to the idea of “starting from the middle of making” as a proposition of inversion and transmutation of the elements involved in pedagogical intervention in school. Hence, teaching practice is conceived less in normative and finalistic terms, but more in the idea of openness to recalcitrances and cultivation of attention to processes and paths.
  • Educational experience in Taekwondo: self-confrontation as a subjective analysis of movement Artigos

Silva, Luiz Arthur Nunes da; Nóbrega, Terezinha Petrucia da

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In this paper, we present the experience of the body as an educational phenomenon in Taekwondo, through the method of self-confrontation as a subjective analysis of movement and educational experience. Our goal is to understand how this body experience unveils the educational phenomenon in the meanings and expressions of the body itself in Taekwondo, based on self-confrontation. The methodology is based on the phenomenological attitude of French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, through which we conducted dialogues and discussions in this universe of meanings that are expressed in the body. As an ally to phenomenology, we brought the cinema-truth, described by Edgar Morin and Jean Rouch, in order to give the necessary treatment for the imagistic construction of our corpus of analysis, consisting of footage of interviews, classes and self-confrontations, stemming from the capture and reading of the records of Taekwondo Masters. Thus, we positioned three distinct moments in which records were made (filming): interviews with the Masters (conversation/reports), Taekwondo classes taught by them, and self-confrontation. The sensitive look provided by the floating reading of the material and by the imaginative variation allowed to expand the thoughts concerning the perception for the understanding of the phenomenon in question, giving us elaborations to reflect the educational phenomenon in horizons of epistemological, ethical and existential meanings, among others. Thus, we highlight the role of self-confrontation as a device to perceive the lived experience in the body, as sensitive education that master and disciple go along through gesture, technique, and the relationship of the body with others, with the world, and with one’s own being. We perceive, in this context, the mark of an education that is transfigured by the educational experience characterized by sensitivity.
  • The epistemological challenge of indigenous and school educational knowledge in intercultural education Articles

    Saavedra, Esteban; Quilaqueo, Daniel

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The object of this work is to understand and explain the epistemological tension between indigenous educational knowledge and the Eurocentric monoculturality of national education systems, from the complexity implied by school education in the contexts of the indigenous peoples of America. The justification for this style of education has been the colonisation of indigenous peoples and their integration into national states, denying the epistemes of their own educational knowledge in school education. In this scenario, we propose an epistemological critique of the construction of intercultural knowledge as proposed by states, based on epistemological pluralism. Specifically, we analyse the cases of the Milpas Educativas project in Mexico, the educational action called kimeltuwün in the Araucanía Region of Chile, and the education policy of the State of Roraima, Brazil. We consider the political context that regulates intercultural education in the Bilingual Intercultural Education experiments of national states and the recommendations of Convention No. 169 of the International Labour Organisation. In conclusion, we propose a form of intercultural education that takes into account the epistemological tension between the indigenous and school epistemes. We also propose the need to construct a form of intercultural education adapted to the context of each indigenous people, in the framework of their interethnic relations with non-indigenous societies, through dialogue from the perspective of epistemological pluralism.
  • Student perception of the Agricultural Sciences and Humanities undergraduate courses at São Paulo State University (UNESP), Brazil Articles

Santos, Monique Matsuda dos; Pedroso, Isabela Gomes Ferreira; Oliveira, Sandra Cristina de

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In the scenario of Brazilian Higher Education Institutions, the justifications for dropout or permanence of students vary according to the school and its courses, given their peculiarities, as well as those of their students. However, studies and governmental actions on school dropout are still scarce, which shows the lack of innovation on this topic. Thus, the general objective of the present work is to evaluate the perception of graduates and student dropouts in relation to their undergraduate courses in the areas of Agricultural Sciences and Humanities, from the Experimental Campi of the São Paulo State University (UNESP), Brazil. Specifically, it is intended to show a methodological procedure that can identify which specific elements have influenced the students’ decision to evade or to stay in the referred courses. Thus, a survey was carried out through a structured questionnaire with 40 multiple choice sentences, which was applied by email and through social networks to a probabilistic sample of 243 respondents. Finally, the multivariate clustering analysis associated with testing nonparametric hypotheses was used to verify the existence of a difference between the perceptions of graduates and dropouts that indicated influence on their decision. The results showed that, in general, graduates and dropouts have positive perceptions regarding the chosen course, as well as with respect to the general infrastructure conditions of the campi. For two courses, one in each area, significant differences were observed between the perceptions of graduates and dropouts, with mainly intrinsic characteristics related to students and their well-being, such as identification with the course; motivation and persistence to achieve the objectives; personal and / or family health and stability; and socio-academic integration with other students were those that directly or indirectly interfered in decision-making.
  • The pedagogy of the college seminar: historical background and contemporary interpretation Artigos

    Ó, Jorge Ramos do

    Abstract in English:

Abstact This article focuses on college seminars, created in eighteenth-century Germany, which was consolidated as a quintessential pedagogical tool, capable of objectively combining research and teaching, consequently giving rise to the emergence and assurance of the modern and contemporary researcher. It seeks to contribute, both theoretically and practically, to what is an always-unfinished discussion about pedagogy and scientific creation. The text is divided into two parts, the first of which attempts to capture the essence of the seminar, while the second describes an ongoing seminar experience today. In short, the article aims at identifying seminar pedagogy, then and now, as the expression of an adventurous spiral in which the academic “coming-to-be-together” is intrinsically connected to the creation of inventive thinking processes. A methodology attempting to overcome both time and distance is thus developed. On the one hand, it emphasizes the importance of oral exchanges between students and teachers; on the other, it focuses on the slow and systematic labor of intertextual appropriation. These two fundamental practices bring together all those who, past and present, identify themselves with a pedagogy of inventive writing and seek to reflect on it within the higher education.
  • Environment as a cosmopolitan value: a comparative socio-historical analysis of the school biology curriculum Articles

Mattos, Luiza Maria Abreu de; Gomes, Maria Margarida

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This work presents an analysis proposal based on theorizations regarding comparative systems of reason, cosmopolitanism and the history of school disciplines, seeking to understand how certain objects become subject to reflection and action in the school curriculum from an international perspective. Comparing historical aspects of the teaching of biology in Brazil and Germany, the article presents a discussion of how the environment has increasingly been constituted as a cosmopolitan value in the biology school curriculum. In theoretical and methodological terms, curricular documents and textbooks are treated as historical sources and an analysis of them is articulated with results of a literature review, evidencing how different cultural organizations are combined to make this object intelligible in the present. The analyses indicate a transnational process of hegemonizing the value of the environment as a pragmatic macro-trend related to the concept of education for sustainable development. This trend is overlapped by curricular traditions of teaching in diverse forms, and also by local issues in each country linked to the history of this school subject. In Germany, the hybridizations refer above all to the pragmatic macro-trend, punctuated by critical elements. Meanwhile, in Brazil, the transnational macro-trends are hybridized with local characteristics, mainly through academic development in the field of environmental education and its different currents, in addition to growing closer to social and environmental movements. The work demonstrates that this proposal for analysis broadens the potentials of articulation between curricular subjects and comparative education, principally in the sense of questioning international consensuses that are considered universal and transcendental concerning education.
  • From dream to achievement: entrepreneurial pedagogy, making education entrepreneurial, and neoliberal rationality Articles

Alves, Alexandre; Klaus, Viviane; Loureiro, Carine Bueira

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Over the last decades, educational reforms have increasingly been based on the Market logic and the neoliberal rule of self-regulated, flexible and entrepreneurial individual. In Brazil, stemming from several public-private partnerships the idea of the so-called “entrepreneurial pedagogy” spread seeking to utilize the school device to disseminate the culture of entrepreneurship among children and young people. Informed by the neoliberal economic rationality, such pedagogical form argues that by adopting an entrepreneurial attitude in all spheres of life is the key to achieve objectives such as self-fulfillment, material welfare and personal satisfaction. According to this logic, in order to adapt to an ever-changing and increasingly competitive economy, the individual must learn to be the author and leading actor/actress of their own life, taking responsibility for permanently learning the competences and skill demanded by the market. To carry out this essay, contemplated the studies on entrepreneurial pedagogy in Brazil, as well as specific programs and public-private partnerships, supported by contemporary social theory. Findings are not intended to represent the totality of actions in the field of education in Brazil, but rather point to the spread of entrepreneurship as a normative model that encourages the individual to conceive him/herself as a company and to take risks, according to an actuarial rationality, which the student responsible for their training, their success or failure. Thus, the entrepreneurial pedagogy not only sells an illusion but also reduces the space for alternative ways of conceiving education as a citizen´s right and as common good.
  • The expansion of public and private schools in the outskirts of São Paulo (1900-1964) Articles

    Dantas, Adriana Santiago Rosa

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article deals with the expansion of public and private schools in the East periphery of the city of São Paulo in the first decades of the 20th century. The original research, which resulted in this text, studied the expansion of private school in the East region of the city. Our initial hypothesis was that this expansion was not a phenomenon from the new millennium, but that would have been happening since the 20th century. The hypothesis was proved; as data has shown that the private expansion was concomitant with the formation of the East periphery. We used georeferencing to create maps of this expansion in time and space from quantitative data of public and private schools in the East region of São Paulo provided by the State Secretary of Education. Our analysis was based on the literature about education and peripheries, considering racial relations to discuss the growth of public and private schools. We concluded that the expansion of private schools was always present during the formation of the East periphery. We also confirm the popular participation in contributing for the expansion of public school in the region.
  • What students say about the conflicts arising from their relationship with teachers Artigos

    André, Ernesto Barros

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article presents the results of a research on the conflicts arising from the teacher-student relationship, seen from the students’ perspective. It was conducted at a secondary school in Angola. It aimed to scrutinize the causes and types of situations resulting from the classroom relationship between the teacher and the students. In pursuit of the objectives, the qualitative methodology was applied. Semi-structured group interviews were carried out with the participation of 129 students, whose data were analyzed through a content analysis method using Maxqda software, version 12. The results were organized around three themes: conception of conflicts by the students, situations leading to conflicts and / or conflict situations, and types of conflicts. From the perspective of the students from that school, the study revealed that the most relevant conflicts of the teacher-student relationship are related to disrespect of the ethical-deontological norms by teachers and the manifestation of unseemly attitudes and behaviors on the part of both students and the teachers embodied in sexual harassment, bribery and so many other issues, thus provoking verbal and physical aggression, revenge, resentment and hatred as well as other types of evils that “poison” the teacher-student relationship. Since the case study occurred in a public education school, further research should focus on more schools with the sole objective of measuring or comparing the results in order to generalize it in that region.
  • Philosophy in the National Curriculum Guidelines (Ocem) and in the National High School Exam (Enem): temporal and conceptual gaps Articles

    Macedo, Ester Pereira Neves de

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article analyses the correspondence between the philosophy questions administered in the Brazilian National High School Exam (Enem) and the Brazilian National Curriculum Guidelines (Ocem), published in 2006, as a case study of the relationship between curriculum document and large scale assessment, having as theoretical framework what Stephen Ball and Richard Bow call “policy cycle” (BALL; BOWE, 1992; BOWE, BALL; GOLD, 1992; MAINARDES, 2006). This study becomes particularly relevant given, on the one hand, the intermittence of the offering of philosophy in Brazilian high schools, and, on the other, the imminent reformulation of the exam, to conform to the new National Common Core (BNCC). This study highlights Ball and Bowe´s thesis that the “implementation” of curricular documents is neither automatic nor certain. By analyzing the Ocem as part of a web of educational policies for high school, of which the Enem and the BNCC are also part, the present study aims to contribute towards strengthening the place of philosophy in high school, by highlighting points of continuity and points of tension between the preexisting nodes of this web. This article is divided in three parts: 1) a quantitative overview of how the philosophy contents proposed by the Ocem were covered in the exam in the last twenty years, pointing out gaps that still persist; 2) exploration of some factors that explain these gaps, in particular the difference in origin and purpose of each of these instruments; 3) qualitative analysis of how the conceptual differences between the Ocem and the Enem translate in how philosophy appears in the exam throughout the years. In conclusion, I present some points of reflection about the prospect for philosophy on the exam in this new horizon after the publication of the new BNCC.
  • Marks of color/race in upper secondary education and their effects on higher education in Brazil Articles

    Artes, Amélia; Unbehaum, Sandra

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Over the past decades, there has been an increase in the participation of negros2 students in higher education in Brazil, which points to a change in the racial-ethnic profile. This new scenario is the result of pressure from black social movements and the achievement of different inclusion policies through quotas, initiated in the 1990s and strengthened in the 2000s. Despite such initiatives, in comparison to the total population, the participation of the negros is still far from the desired percentage. To understand this reality, it is necessary to bring quantitative information to the discussion in order to characterize the trajectory of young people in upper secondary education and the marks of the differentiation of schools attended by whites and negros. To complement the analyses of racial belonging, it is necessary to include other social markers, such as gender and social status. Therefore, we have worked on intersectionality and the constitution of four analysis groups: white men, white women, negro men, and negro women. As a contribution, this article presents data provided by IBGE, from the 2000 and 2010 Demographic Censuses, as evidence of the changes observed in higher education institutions in Brazil regarding ethnic-racial diversity. These data measure the challenges still present and that need to be overcome with a view to quality education for all.
  • Women, black women and ethnic-racial configurations at the Escola Normal de Caetité, Bahia, Brazil (1898-1943) Articles

Cruz, Elizeu Pinheiro da; Santos, Janaina de Jesus; Nogueira, Maria Lúcia Porto Silva; Nogueira, Nadila Luiza Oliveira

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This text presents a reading about the presence of women in the Escola Normal de Caetité, Bahia, Brazil (1898-1943) in an effort to break with narratives, in school legislation and curricula, which describe them as submissive teachers, executing tasks prescribed by men. When resuming documents from the Municipal Public Archive, from the Escola Normal de Caetité and from retired teachers in a historical-discursive path located in gender studies, which involved reading copies of the Jornal A Penna and of photographs, the text problematizes policies of silencing in two temporalities, that of the documents of the period 1898-1943 and that of the archives that organize the narratives of the Normal School in the present time, to bring out experiences of protagonism of women in the teaching profession. This period marks the beginning of teacher training in Caetité and extends till the end of the activities of Jornal A Penna, one of the sources of this study. The educational scenes that the documents in the archives reveal allow us to affirm that the Escola Normal emerged sexist, classist and racist as a symptom of a State constituted in these same nuances. To exist as a woman and as a black woman meant resisting different oppressions. It concludes by arguing that the creative ways of the women of the Escola Normal de Caetité contributed to resist the silencing policies of the Upper Sertão region of Bahia from the second half of the 20th century and should appear in the local archives as a condition of possibility for textual productions sustaining forms of protagonism marked by gendered and racialized experiences.
  • Evaluative appraisal by master’s students on the teaching of reading and writing Articles

Mello, Marcela Tavares de; Rodrigues, Jéssica do Nascimento

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article presents reflections about academic literacies, understood as social practices, ways of being, listening, reading, writing, acting, interacting, believing, valuing, feeling and using resources, tools and technologies capable of enacting and developing the identity that is characteristic of the academic sphere (FISCHER, 2007). In a qualitative-interpretative approach, we aim at analyzing the evaluative appraisals that students in a master’s program in Communication and Society at a public university develop about the teaching of reading and writing in the academic sphere, considering the pedagogical means used by higher education teachers. As empirical evidence, we use excerpts of accounts from collective interviews conducted in 2019, where the subjects reveal their experiences with the reading and writing of academic speech genres. Based on data so generated, it can be affirmed that, considering the existence of pedagogical practices that guide understanding about speech genres, the students’ evaluative appraisals indicate satisfaction and contentment in reading the texts. On the other hand, with regard to writing, their evaluative appraisals signal dissatisfaction and displeasure, due to the absence of pedagogical directions and the need for continuing education for teachers who: a) request texts for assessment purposes only; and b) do not provide enough information about the speech genre in which the texts requested are expected to materialize. The results suggest it is necessary to institutionalize activities for the teaching of reading and writing not only in undergraduate programs, but also in graduate ones, considering the dialogical, situated and uninterrupted nature of literacy processes in this discursive sphere.
  • “Who cares about the teacher?”: teacher’s perception of the municipalization of education in Porto Velho/RO* Articles

Oliveira, Eudeir Barbosa de; Zibetti, Marli Lúcia Tonatto

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The municipalization of primary education resulting from the separation of responsibilities between the Union, States, and municipalities was carried out temporally and procedurally in distinct ways in different Brazilian municipalities. We present results of the analysis of the last stage of the municipalization process in Porto Velho/RO, in which schools from the State school system were transferred to the Municipality of Porto Velho/RO, including teachers who, hired by the State school system, were transferred to Municipality’s administration. Our goal is to analyze the teachers’ perceptions about the process of municipalization of teaching activities and its implications on their career and teaching work. Fifteen teachers from six state schools that were transferred to the municipality’s administration participated in the research. The data were produced through semi-structured interviews, notes in a field diary, and analysis of the documents that regulate municipalization. The results indicate that, although the official speeches attribute to teachers the role of protagonists in the educational processes, in the conception and implementation of these changes, in Porto Velho/RO, there was no involvement of the teachers, and the spaces for participation in schools were not constituted in contexts capable of contributing to democratic formation. According to Historical-Cultural Psychology, the absence of spaces for the appropriation of historical and political reality interferes with the constitution of critical awareness and alters the essence of the teacher’s work, favoring the alienation condition.
  • The role of informal (adult) education in the promotion of successful ageing Articles

Antunes, Maria da Conceição Pinto; Macedo, Ana Catarina

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Framed by a community-focused and ongoing, or lifelong, vision of education, this paper aims to demonstrate the importance of adult education in the promotion of successful ageing, based on an action research project at a Private Institution for Social Solidarity (Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social) in Northern Portugal. The project involved a group of twenty-five retired and partially retired adults, aged fifty-six to seventy-five. Qualitative and hermeneutic interpretive research paradigms were considered to be the most appropriate for this project, while the preferred methodology was participatory action research, for its capacity to promote participation and engage the social actors involved. In light of the interests, needs and potential of the participants, the action took the form of three workshops: Computer Skills; Pedagogy & Healthy Living and a Topical workshop. These consisted of activities based on active, participative methodologies that foster effective, willing participation, providing opportunities for learning, socialising and recreation and transforming the daily lives of the participants. The project highlights the processes involved in educational intervention programmes for older adults and shows positive outcomes in terms of learning, interpersonal relationships, and improved wellbeing, signalling the urgent need for widespread third age educational provision as a means of promoting successful ageing.
  • European citizenship in school: supplementing the curriculum Artigos

Piedade, Filipe; Ribeiro, Norberto; Malafaia, Carla; Loff, Manuel; Menezes, Isabel; Neves, Tiago

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The project of creating a common European citizenship requires that the educational systems from the different member-states of the European Union (EU) contribute to the education of European citizens that are critical and active regarding the objective of continuing and perfecting the European project. In Portugal, previous studies of upper secondary education have shown serious shortcomings, both in the curricula and the textbooks of several subjects, in the pedagogical approaches suggested for the process of teaching/learning about this European dimension. In this article, we have tried to find out which kind of extra and co-curricular activities the schools have been organizing to fill the previously mentioned shortcomings. To that end, we have interviewed 16 teachers from 4 different schools of the Portuguese upper secondary educational system. Their accounts have allowed us to identify several kinds of extra and co-curricular activities that have been implemented by their schools in order to increase their students´ level of knowledge and reflexiveness regarding the EU. The analysis of these accounts has also allowed us to identify both the potential and limitations involved in developing these activities and to make some general recommendations towards improving the conditions for the schools to give a more efficient contribution to the objective of consolidating a active and critical European citizenship.
  • Social representations and pedagogical practices in environmental education Artículos

    Calixto-Flores, Raúl

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Social representations are a practical knowledge which gives meaning to the environment and sense to different practices. Knowledge of social representations in environmental education is the basis for understanding the practices of environmental educators. The research carried out had the objective of describing the representations of environmental education and the meaning of the pedagogical practices from a sample of environmental educators. It is a descriptive study, of interpretative nature, guided by the process approach to social representations. The results achieved include the observation that environmental educators provide the pedagogical practices in environmental education with a sense towards the conformation of congruent lifestyles with attitudes and values of care and respect to the environment. The research has observed the existence of social representations on environmental education and some of the implications they have in their pedagogical practices. These results confirm why social representations constitute a theory that is increasingly used to understand the common sense found in various educational actors, who can take a stand on pedagogical practice. Likewise, it contributes to interpret the relationships between representations and pedagogical practices in environmental education. Anthropocentric social representations are predominant, so that in the processes of formation and updating of educators, it would be pertinent to incorporate an inter-transdisciplinary training.
  • World Bank proposals for Brazilian educational policy (2016-2018) Articles

Guerra, Dhyovana; Figueiredo, Ireni Marilene Zago

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In this article, we discuss the proposals of the World Bank for Brazilian education policy from 2016 to 2018. To this end, we examined excerpts from four documents issued by the World Bank (2016, 2017a, 2017b, 2018), an international organization that provides loans and technical advice to member countries, as well as plays an expressive role in intellectual production, through the preparation of a set of documents that subsidize the implementation of educational policies. We found in our study a World Bank’s emphasis on state and education reform, in which the fulfillment of basic educational needs is considered as one of the fundamental variables to manage poverty levels. It would be possible through education, which promotes the acquisition of skills and competencies during the school years, to foster jobs and consequently obtain income to reduce poverty. It seems that education is conceived as a central element for alleviating the effects of poverty and promoting equity in the four World Bank documents analyzed. Education is also pointed out as one of the reasons for the inefficiency of public spending in Brazil, which tends to express an alignment with the neoliberal project of society, starting in the 1990s.
  • Writing to learn in two disciplines: negotiating knowledge-construction and extending teaching-time Articles

Molina, María Elena; Colombo, Laura Marina

    Abstract in English:

Abstract In the last decades, the links between writing and learning have been widely studied. In higher education, researchers have focused on students´ productions, on their standpoints towards writing in different disciplines, and on the complex relations between subject contents and writing practices, among others. However, teaching practices that intertwine writing and disciplinary contents have received scarce attention. This work emphasises two key aspects of teaching practices related to writing to learn activities: teaching time and responsibilities in knowledge-construction. A multiple case study was conducted with two first-year courses, one in Linguistics and the other in Biology. These classes were offered in two public universities in Argentina. Data collection techniques included, mainly, classroom documents, class observations and semi-structured interviews with students. Focusing on class observations, this paper shows how the teaching time was extended by intertwining teaching practices with writing as a learning tool. In both courses, writing extended class-time when students had the opportunity to write outside the classrooms and to discuss what they wrote in whole-class discussions. Additionally, these uses of writing helped students and professors to share, in a more symmetrical way, the responsibilities towards knowledge construction.
  • Education for sustainable consumption from critical pedagogy Artículos

    Martín-Sánchez, Miguel; Casares-Ávila, Laura; Cáceres-Muñoz, Jorge

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Education for consumption from a critical perspective is a serious issue that needs to be studied and worked on by all members of the educational society. This work raises two objectives. On the one hand, to carry out an analysis of the current society in terms of consumption. In today’s Western society, the consumption of goods has become a factor of integration in society and has been established as the key to access the first-order world. The logic of the consumer´s market has been established in Western education creating a consumer pedagogy. On the other hand, it is intended to justify the need for a critical pedagogy for consumption as a pedagogical model aimed at making children and young people economically literate by promoting critical thinking and strengthening the public educational system for an adequate and equitable individual and social development. Regarding the method, this work has been carried out from the perspective and critical analysis of educational and social theories that address consumption and its consequences for the 21st century society. As a result, the approach of constructing and critically defending the school and education is presented through coordinated actions between students and teachers that achieve the empowerment to be critical, reflective and socially responsible. Conclusion is that educating for responsible consumption requires the commitment of the entire educational community in order to achieve social change.
  • Textbooks and national Catholicism in the dictatorships of Salazar and Franco Articles

Ferreira, António Gomes; García, Erika González

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article examines how school textbooks are part of the historical-educational heritage of the education system, not only for their being objects which reflect the memory of the schools but also for their being an indispensable resource for the study of the school culture in any country. Aware that textbooks have been the guardians of the dominant culture of a given historical period and subjected to political as well as religious regulation, the objective of this work is, firstly, to reflect upon the treatment they received with respect to the two basic pillars of society that were politics and religion during the dictatorships of Salazar and Franco; and secondly, to analyse the discursive content of the books, the exercises, and the images included, which will allow us to also interpret the socioeconomic context and the role afforded to the family and to women in a dictatorial regime. As a reference, we shall take up those textbooks which were the most used by children in Portuguese and Spanish schools.
  • English language assessment: unfolding school students’ and parents’ views Articles

Larenas, Claudio Díaz; Boero, Nicolás Acuña; Rodríguez, Barbara Ravanal; Sánchez, Ignacio Riffo

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The current study analyzes Chilean students’ and parents’ perceptions of English language assessment. 352 Chilean 10 th graders were surveyed using the Perceptions of the Assessment Tasks Inventory, the Perceived Classroom Assessment Environment Scale, and the Test Anxiety Scale in order to measure their perceptions of English language assessment. A semi-structured interview was also conducted to capture the perceptions of 74 parents about English and the way their children are assessed in the English subject. The quantitative data was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient to measure how strong the relationship of the scores was in the three scales, and qualitative data was categorized using content and frequency analysis. The findings suggest that the subscales of the three surveys hold statistically significant relationships and students feel that a Learning-oriented assessment environment benefits them more than a Performance-oriented one. The former is a kind of environment that favors students’ learning and mastery of subject materials, whereas the latter is a type of environment that aligns with classroom assessment practices that emphasize the importance of grades over learning. The qualitative results also suggest that parents have a positive perception of the English language and believe it is useful for their children’s life even though they themselves might find it difficult to learn the language.
  • Reflections on teaching practice in high school physical education classes Artigos

Coffani, Márcia Cristina Rodrigues da Silva; Gomes, Cleomar Ferreira

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The work discusses the investigations about the curricular practices within the pedagogical teaching in physical education in high school. Theoretical and methodological discussions are based on the Sociology of the body, everyday life and youth. The study is qualitative, ethnographic-descriptive and the research subjects were the teacher and young students participating in physical education classes, in a public school, in Cuiabá-MT. It involved analysis of documentary sources such as the School’s Pedagogical Project and Annual Physical Education Teaching Plan; participant observations in classes and in the daily life of the school; semi-structured interviews with teacher and young students. Based on the knowledge of aspects of the youth universe, particularly the social markers that permeate the material, cultural and symbolic relationships and conditions of life of the participants, youth can be reflected as a sociocultural category and the relationship of school and physical education within the context of young people’s lives. The absence and presence of meanings in physical education classes were evaluated to reflect on their place in the cultural training project for young people. Possibilities of pedagogical practices that value the teaching of body practices stemming from the approximation to the youth universe are suggested, which is necessary for the legitimacy and pedagogical autonomy of the discipline to occur in the high school curriculum.
  • Pedagogical resilience: riverside schools in the face of drought and floods in the Amazon River Artigos

Alencar, Danielle Golvim da Silva; Costa, Francimara Souza da

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Pedagogical resilience can be understood as a strategy that enables, in a practical and qualitative way, the adaptation of the teacher to the adverse situations that arise in his or her teaching environment, mainly in unconventional educational realities, such as those experienced by schools located on the banks of the rivers of the Amazonia. This study aimed to analyze the process of pedagogical resilience of teachers from a riverside school located in the municipality of Careiro da Várzea, State of Amazonas, considering three basic factors: teacher training, school curriculum and educational practices carried out. To conduct the research, the qualitative approach was used and data were collected through document analysis, bibliographic review and interviews with teachers and the school manager. The results show that the school curriculum has a similar structure to the curriculum of urban schools, but teachers try to adapt it to their reality, even if in a partial way. The absence of specific training was observed for the performance of teachers in riverside education and the need for a process of constant adaptation of educational practices, according to the drought and flood seasons of the Amazon River. Such needs result in curricular and planning re-elaborations, seasonal changes in class strategies and the creation of practices, in addition to the need to adapt the school environment to the lack of materials and adequate infrastructure.
  • Scientific investigation of education governance: empirical and theoretical trends Artigos

    Domingues, Ivo; Costa, Maria José

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This study analyses literature concerned with school governance published in the last two decades in journals classified as ‘A1’ by CAPES (a Brazilian public organisation in charge of the coordination for the improvement of higher education personnel). The study is based on the sociology of organisations and performs an exploratory approach, with a proximity with meta-analysis. It analyses the literature edited in Portuguese and focuses on several scientific dimensions (scientific goals, research nature, theoretical frameworks and research strategy). The research method is qualitative by nature, and it involves secondary sources (papers). The papers are the corpus and were selected according to the random systematic sampling technique. The theoretical framework involves several concepts: reification, axiological neutrality, and scientific habitus; furthermore, it proposes the ‘militant science’ concept to typify the analysed science that integrates the empirical corpus. The main findings show some critical findings related to the scientific literature taken as a research object: it is ambivalent, not based on theoretical frameworks, prioritizes theoretical deduction rather than empirical induction, as well as macro-level rather than meso- and micro-levels of analysis; uses scientific methods insufficiently controlled, tends to reification approaches; it is affected by elective affinities and devalues the axiological neutrality.
  • Survival of gender stereotypes in the images of Spanish music textbooks Artículos

Villodre, María del Mar Bernabé; Gil, Desirée García; Bello, Vladimir Martínez

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Musical textbooks in Spain have tried to capture the legislative changes promoted by the government, as well as the differences in the treatment of gender, through the representation of women as instrumentalists. The Music textbook becomes a tool for disseminating stereotypes that may have lost their validity in the musical world, which however are not completely internalized due to the impact of the published stereotyped image. Analysis included 2,414 images of 47 Primary Education Music textbooks from different Spanish publishers for the Valencian Community whose aim was to show the evolution and presence of women as instrumentalists (from 1992 to 2011). A quantitative content analysis was used in order to determine the large-scale patterns of the messages transmitted by the images; and a qualitative analysis was also conducted in which some images were selected based on the results of the quantitative content analysis. Although the presence of women as instrumentalists has not increased considerably, their representation playing traditionally male instruments has undergone a relevant change on a qualitative level, when compared to male representations. Thus, there is more female representation with traditionally male instruments; but women musicians are still less represented. There is still a long way to go for music education textbooks to offer images of instrumentalists that are respectful of sexual diversity; so that they will no longer contribute to the perpetuation of sexist stereotypes.
  • Education, school and school mathematics: meanings of the basic education mathematics teachers Articles

Godoy, Elenilton Vieira; Gerab, Fabio; Santos, Vinício de Macedo

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The mathematics teacher initial training has been the subject of discussion in the governmental spheres and in the Brazilian Societies of Mathematical Education and of Mathematics. As a consequence of this, we notice advances in some critical points, among which stands out - the excess of academic mathematics disarticulated from the school mathematics; and - the approximation of the mathematics education theoretical-methodological trends with the mathematics undergraduate courses curricular organization. However, there are still absent the conversations involving the different and varied dimensions that interfere in the teaching and learning process of school mathematics; and the different curriculum theories. As a result, the neutrality of mathematical knowledge and the excessive concern with the normative dimension of the curriculum continue being protagonists in the mathematics teacher initial training. In this sense, this article aimed to investigate aspects related to the perception and understanding of basic education mathematics teachers about the school subjects, the school, the school education and about being a math teacher. Methodologically, it is included in a quali-quantitative research approach, in which, in order to achieve the project’s objectives, a field research, through a questionnaire available in the “Google docs”, was carried out with the public network mathematics teachers from São Paulo state. Theoretically, it was based on studies about curriculum theories. It was tangible that the collaborating teachers are still very attached to the normative dimension of the curriculum, always prioritizing what to teach, how to teach and how to evaluate, without worrying about other dimensions (cultural, social, political) that interfere in the curriculum organization.of the school mathematics.
  • Narratives of thermodynamics in Angolan textbooks and the conceptualization of their readers Artigos

Afonso, Ana Sofia; Freitas, Daniel A.

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The recent Angolan Educational Law assigns textbooks a central role in the learning process. In the current period of peace and prosperity in Angola, the country looks for an education that goes along with the country’s social and economic developments. An education that contributes to scientific and technological innovations in Angolan society, and prepares critical and active citizens. Angola is one of the largest exporters of crude oil in the world, and hence, energy is an important subject to be included in science teaching.Since, in Angola, science teaching is mainly based on textbooks, this study aimed at analysing the thermodynamics approaches provided in physics textbooks. From this analysis, we also aim to infer to what extent textbooks´ proposals convey a relationship between scientific knowledge and an individual’s standpoint in society on energy. The review of the thermodynamics texts, which took into account the socio-cultural context of their production, revealed that they hold a closed discursive structure, with a focus on conceptual content; and that there is an absence of methodological proposals for promoting divergent thinking. Furthermore, the reader is conceptualized as someone belonging to an elite group, “pre-specialist”, with high “scientific capital”, and intrinsically motivated.
  • University Service-Learning in physical activity, physical education, and sport settings: a systematic review Articles

    Cañadas, Laura

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Service-Learning seems to be a very useful methodology in University Grades where students must develop competences to intervene in different contexts where they will be able to perform their professional activity such as those related with physical activity. The aim of this research is to conduct a systematic review of the evidence about the effects that university Service-Learning programs in Physical Activity, Physical Education and Sport settings have on the different agents involved. A systematic review was carried out by searching three databases: Web of Science, ERIC, and SportDiscus. We found 284 articles, but after the exclusion process, we ended up with 25. Studies have shown that implementing Service-Learning proposals have a positive impact on curricular, social, cultural, and civic competences, professional development, personal identity, and feelings. Only four researches address the impact on the recipients, showing different results depending on the program implemented. Just one study assesses the own program showing good results. University Service-Learning in these contexts has shown numerous benefits for students on the academic, social, and work levels; and for the recipients, it helps them make the most of the benefits of practicing physical activity, improving their health and motor functions.
  • Pedagogical practice, metacognition, and reading comprehension in a foreign language: a systematic review from a deductive approach Articles

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The education process has a complex nature that can be approached from a dual theoretical-practical perspective. For this reason, a teacher needs to configure her or his praxis and create their own theoretical constructs. This review article presents the results of an investigation on the new concepts that exist around pedagogical practice, metacognition and reading understanding in a foreign language. In order to respond to the research problem, we have made use of a systematic analysis of studies conducted in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, publicized in the databases Google Scholar, Scielo, Redalyc, Eric, Dialnet, and Scopus, between 1988 and 2018. These studies involve reflections on the previously mentioned categories and, through them, an analysis and an overview were conducted to define an emerging category call metacognitive pedagogical practice. The bibliographic review with a qualitative approach presented in this paper was done taking into account primary and secondary sources (in Spanish, Portuguese, and English) by utilizing the following descriptors: practice, pedagogical practice, metacognition, reading comprehension and reading comprehension in a foreign language. The results of the systematic analysis allow to conclude that it is necessary to develop a metacognitive pedagogical practice, where such practice is understood as a scenario which facilitates to re-link the several factors taking part in the teaching-learning process, such as: reflection, cooperative work, open dialogue, and the teacher´s research within her/his own practice.
  • Mixed methods approach in the theses of a postgraduate program in education: analysis in the light of Creswell Articles

Leite, Luciana Rodrigues; Verde, Ana Paula dos Santos Reinaldo; Oliveira, Francisco das Chagas Rodrigues de; Nunes, João Batista Carvalho

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Mixed methods research embraces the association of procedures to collect and analyze data as well as the combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques. In the past years there has been an increase in the use of mixed methods, especially in the international literature. This article focuses on the use of mixed methods to education research in Brazil. The following question guides the investigation: “to what extent the mixed methods approach is present in Brazilian Postgraduate Programs in Education whose academic performance matches the international standards of excellence?”. A documentary research was conducted to map and analyze the theses of a postgraduate program that reached the highest score according to Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) from 2013 to 2018. The studies of John Creswell provided our theoretical basis and the analysis criteria for the selected theses. The search conducted on the Sucupira Platform found that 11 of 104 theses (10.6%) from the appointed Postgraduate Program in Education make use of mixed methods. Thus, it was verified, to greater and lesser degrees, the perception of the potential use of mixed methods in the theses, which improves over time as more recent theses present clearer justifications for integrating qualitative and quantitative techniques. In addition, both theoretical and methodological developments were verified, however, researchers in the Postgraduate Program have yet to employ more up to date references regarding mixed methods research.
  • Variables influencing the elementary education IDEB in public municipal networks of São Paulo in 2017 Articles

    Crozatti, Jaime

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Considering the continuous need to improve the condition of Brazilian education and the moment of renewal of the main Law on financing education in municipalities in 2020, this article aims to identify the variables of the context of elementary education networks in São Paulo municipalities, which have a significant correlation with the IDEB, in 2017. Among those indicated in the literature, 33 variables are used, which have data available on official government websites, and analyzed using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method and the stepwise procedure. The regression equation obtained in the study shows that the average expenditure per student on staff of the municipal networks, teaching effort, school dropout, as well as the development index of the income dimension explain, with a statistical significance of 5%, more than 66% of IDEB of municipal networks in the state of São Paulo in 2017. The results corroborate the national and international literature regarding the figure of the teacher, his remuneration, and the management of the school process as the key elements for the development of education. The moment calls for a posture of better investments, with coherent planning and execution in the social and economic context, specific to the development of educational activity, with attention to school spaces, financial resources and the professionals who work there.
  • The multiple faces of plagiarism among higher education students: a case study Seção: Artigos

    Ramos, Madalena; Morais, César

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The sociological view on plagiarism among higher education students has produced in recent decades theoretical and methodological advances that enable to problematize and monitor this old and persistent phenomenon, considering its contemporary aspects. This article, resulting from a research project, systematises some of those advances in order to critically analyse the perceptions about various forms of plagiarism among students in the 2015/2016 academic year at a Portuguese higher education institution, assessing (dis)continuities between various levels of study and controlling for the effect of the variables sex, age, area of study and knowledge of the academic code of conduct in use at that institution. The data under analysis results from a questionnaire survey and demonstrates that students’ perceptions of what constitutes plagiarism diverge, especially in relation to some forms of plagiarism, even though they gain incisiveness throughout the academic career. On the other hand, students from different levels of study highlight the role of knowledge and teachers’ guidance in preventing this unethical practice. The positive impact of academic socialisation on these perceptions demonstrates the importance of a pedagogy that addresses honesty and intertextual writing, demanded by the students themselves, but often overlooked in the prevention policies and academic curricula of higher education institutions.
  • Advocacy coalition and learning from public policies: changes in PAIC’s core convictions Artigos

    Sumiya, Lilia Asuca; Sano, Hironobu

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The objective of this article is to understand how a coalition was formed that led he Literacy at the Right Age Program (PAIC) in Ceará to become a priority policy in the state. The Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) was adopted to analyze the role of the key actors in the coalition’s development, characterize its belief system and the learning process in policy. The research was based on a survey of institutional documents of the program, theses and dissertations, shorthand notes of public hearings, media news and interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis of the trajectory of the main ideas over ten years, which began with the experience of public managers in Sobral, Ceará, in 1997, and culminated with they taking over the state government in 2007, allowed us to characterize the composition of a single coalition. The formation and dissemination of the beliefs stemmed from the performance of the Ceara´s Committee for the Elimination of School Illiteracy (CCEAE), which established a strong coalition with the participation of several specialists and institutions, as well as municipal actors. Three layers of beliefs were identified and, in relation to the core convictions of public policy, seven components were characterized, divided into two periods of analysis. The change in core convictions was analyzed from the perspective of policy learning, considering how the main actors reflected about it.
  • Teachers and teacher education gaps in learning evaluation: evidence and questions Section: Articles

Siqueira, Valéria Aparecida de Souza; Freitas, Pâmela Félix; Alavarse, Ocimar Munhoz

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The present article problematizes teacher education in learning evaluation based on evidence that licensure programs that provide technical and theoretical training on this topic are rare, which leads to the reproduction of models the teacher had been exposed to as a student and of the schools he starts to teach at without the necessary criticism, thus resulting in learning evaluation procedures, instruments and criteria with no validity or reliability, with a heavy impact on students’ educational trajectory and which do not allow using the results to organize the teaching and learning process. The work is founded on bibliographic research, observations of eight Class Councils at a school in the Municipal Education System of São Paulo and answers of 1,083 teachers to a questionnaire administered in a continuing education course on evaluation in the same education system. From the observations, we found that the teacher’s appreciation on whether the student should be retained or advance to the next grade are based on non-cognitive sources such as behavior and participation. In addition, the knowledge gaps demonstrated in the answers to the questionnaires show poor or, in many cases, no training related to evaluation, with mistakes that directly affect the evaluation practice, from the use of unsuitable procedures and instruments to the adoption of varying, imprecise criteria that compromise the whole evaluation process, to the detriment of students. The work shows we should urgently resume the debate on the evaluation practices carried out in schools, which is currently eclipsed by the centrality of external evaluations in the Brazilian educational arena.
  • Implementation of remote schooling during the pandemic: what is the place of special education? Articles

Camizão, Amanda Costa; Conde, Patricia Santos; Victor, Sonia Lopes

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article analyzes the process of implementing remote schooling, aiming to guarantee specialized educational services for students of the target audience of special education during the covid-19 pandemic. It was organized based on the experiences of two teachers, from two cities of the same region. It is a documentary study, as it uses Municipal Education Department records. With the implementation of remote schooling, some questions arose, such as: Why do classes need to return to normality? What are the concrete working conditions offered to special education teachers for remote schooling? How did cities organize themselves to guarantee the right to education of the target audience of special education? Are these conditions supporting inclusive work in the context of a pandemic? The production and data analysis showed the possibilities and limitations of implementing special education from the perspective of inclusive education, as directed by the current national policy. It was concluded that the cities’ special education proposal does not directly correspond to the inclusive proposal of the guidelines prior to the pandemic. If the proposal was committed to the establishment educational bonds, they achieved their goals, but if it is committed to the learning and development of these subjects, the goals were not achieved.
  • Social indicators on people with intellectual disabilities: intersectional essay with a view to education policies Articles

Lopes, Ingrid Anelise; Gonzalez, Roseli Kubo; Prieto, Rosângela Gavioli

    Abstract in English:

Abstract With the aim of analyzing intersections between social indicators related to people classified in the intellectual disability (ID) category in Brazil and their implications for educational policies, in this article we present the characterization of this population based on the extraction of data from the 2010 Demographic Census, applying the recommendations of the Washington Group for defining the number of people with disabilities in the country. From the analysis of an intersectional perspective, it is concluded that, compared to the other categories of disability, ID is the one that suffers the most disadvantages in the indicators of access to work (occupation), monthly nominal income and literacy. In addition, the results regarding the gender category show this as an axis of subordination, since the female has less access to social rights addressed in this study. Regarding the racial identification of people with ID in the country, this seems to influence the classification of individuals in this category of disability, since it is mostly composed of black men. However, the data did not allow us to articulate the race axis with the others, indicating the emerging need to produce and disseminate information that allows analysis and understanding of how different subordination axes affect the lives of people with ID in Brazil and what they indicate for implementation of educational policies, as a vector in the confrontation of inequalities that uniquely mark the situation of people with ID when compared to the general population and also to other categories of disability.
  • The universal design for learning in teacher training: from investigation to inclusive practices Articles

Zerbato, Ana Paula; Mendes, Enicéia Gonçalves

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The pedagogical practices carried out in the schooling of students who are the target audience of Special Education in regular classes are designed through individualized adaptations of the curriculum and flexibility. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL), however, allows for the creation of accessible means of teaching for barrier-free learning. Thus, this study consisted of investigating whether a teacher training program based on this theme would result in practices that achieve greater participation and learning of the target public student of Special Education in the regular class. As a methodology, the collaborative research was chosen to produce knowledge and provide teacher training. Ten basic education teachers and seven teaching undergraduate students participated in the study. The program resulted in eleven meetings, involving various training tools, such as fictional and real teaching cases, case discussion scripts and preparation of lesson plans based on the UDL. The collected data were organized, synthesized and presented in order to illustrate the results of the training program, based on three cases, selected by the in-service teachers and due to the difficulty they had to promote the participation and learning of a particular student. The classes were collectively designed, implemented by the teachers and recorded in a field diary. The results pointed to convergent and divergent elements between the findings of this investigation and theoretical studies on the subject. It was concluded that the training strategies based on the assumptions of the UDL and collaboration proved to be potentiating tools in the development of teaching actions consistent with diversity, as well as in the initial and continuing education of the participants.
  • The formation of teaching logic: a study on Franco-Brazilian teaching knowledge and practices Articles

    Valente, Gabriela

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The purpose of this article is to propose a new way of understanding teaching based on the term teaching logic, in other words, a principle of justice comprising teaching knowledge and mobilised by teachers in their professional activities. The drawing up of this concept was inspired by pragmatic sociology and by the following questions: what would the action logics be that guide the conduct of teachers? Are the same action logics deployed by teachers in different sociocultural contexts? Would it be possible to find similarities between the principles of justice of French and Brazilian professionals? To answer these questions, field observations were carried out and 36 Brazilian and French teachers were invited to describe professional situations in semi-structured interviews. The analysis of scenarios linked to teachers’ real activities reveals that although there is a plurality of logics, there is a tendency to use a civic logic in France and a liberal logic in Brazil. The discussion of this result demonstrates that action logics are limited to privileged justice criteria in national contexts. Nevertheless, it was possible to conclude that, even in different sociocultural settings, there is professional knowledge shared by teachers in both countries, which are translated into principles of justice and comprise a teaching action logic.
  • Working time and teaching time: composition of the working hours of São Paulo teachers Artigos

Barbosa, Andreza; Fernandes, Maria José da Silva; Cunha, Renata Cristina Oliveira Barrichelo; Aguiar, Thiago Borges de

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Given the difficulty of quantifying how much time teachers actually work, since the official data available often only consider the time spent in the classroom, or the contractual working hours, this paper presents results of a research that analyzed the constitution of the working hours of teachers in the public school system in the state of São Paulo. We investigated and problematized the constitution of the working hours of teachers in the final years of elementary and secondary education in the mentioned school network, considering classroom time and extra-class work time. The research in question was carried out in a city in the countryside of São Paulo in two stages: in the first, questionnaires were applied to teachers from thirty schools. In the second, an in-depth qualitative analysis of the data collected in the first stage was conducted through semi-structured interviews with a group of thirteen teachers. The results obtained show that the working time of teachers is much longer than the official time that their working day consists of, which means that a great deal of the time devoted to extra-class work is unpaid, although it serves to perform essential activities for teachers to work with students. It was also highlighted that the teachers who participated in the survey have expanded their working hours to compensate for the low salaries received, which is also added to the increased work demand and the devaluation of teachers, as reported by them.
  • Education in the village and Muã Mimatxi Indigenous school: the tehêy of fishing knowledge Articles

Braz, Werymehe Alves; Valadares, Juarez Melgaço

    Abstract in English:

Abstract Nowadays, Brazilian laws on Indigenous education highlight the need to build differentiated schools in the villages and the inclusion of Indigenous theme in urban schools. In this work, we aim to understand the culture of Pataxoop, whose village Muã Mimatxi is located in the city of Itapecerica, Minas Gerais , Brazil. We intend to seek elements that help build the cultural identity of this people, strengthening their sense of belonging. It is a qualitative research aiming to understand the past and its connection to the present, distinguishing the subjective times of the ensemble. To do so, we interviewed the cacique and the teacher of the subject ‘Uses of the Territory’ who has been creating narrative-drawing, called tehêys of knowledge fishing. In the tehêys , the formation of Pataxoop people, their cosmogonies, myths, generational interaction, and forms of resistance are represented. It is also a didactic material for the village school. We could see, in both interviews, a spontaneous narration, with no cuts, in which interviewees developed these stories with a strong affective commitment. We have increased our understanding of the interactions among education, culture, and identity of these Indigenous groups, thus better understanding the social formation of Brazilian people and the importance of myths to build the history of the village. Understanding the way of living and thinking, their rituals and social practices, helps to think about the selection of themes to be studied in Indigenous and urban schools.
  • Teaching between the republican ideal and everyday violence Artigos

    Xavier, Libania

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The article is the result of ongoing research and is based on a set of testimonies from teachers and principals working in public schools in Rio de Janeiro, located in territories conflagrated by armed conflicts. This study is divided into four topics. The first presents the universe researched and the second observes how young teachers perceive their professional role and behave in the face of the explosions of violence in which they often find themselves involved. The third topic analyzes the testimonies of teachers who held management positions, examining the ways of dealing with violence in their daily lives, and the fourth topic addresses the perceptions shared by teachers about the relevance of their work, indicating that the ideal of Republic public education still imposes itself inside the schools. The chosen focus was the tactics they articulate in situations of violence, in view of their past experiences and the expectations they have regarding their future. Therefore, two questions were chosen to guide the analyzes presented, namely: what reasons motivated the teachers to remain in schools located in conflicted territories, despite the risks? What arguments support such a decision? Through them, it is possible to perceive the processes by which these teachers produce their own professional culture, in the intersection between the narratives they build about their professional trajectory and the democratic construction project that, historically, has given meaning to public school.
  • The image of positive affirmation of the Iberian-Asian-Afro-Amerindian people in the pedagogical dimension of Black Cinema Artigos

    Prudente, Celso Luiz

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The purpose of this article is to develop a reflection on the competing aspects in understanding of the image of positive affirmation of African descendants as an Iberian-Asian-Afro-Amerindian minority. I observed in Chanchada an attempt to demean the image of the African, Amerindian, Asian, and Iberian people by representing them with stereotypes of inferiority. This was done in an industry cinema on behalf of cultural colonialism for the benefit of the myth of superiority of the white Euro-Caucasians. In contrast to Chanchada, Cinema Novo (the new cinema movement), with a Marxist influence, was a critique of American imperialism with an authorial aesthetic that valued popular culture. This pointed to a cinematic syntax that found in the black man its aesthetic referent, in that it represented the proletarian traits and their development and, in the case of the white man, the bourgeois expression and its ensuing power. I show in the article that Black Cinema was born from the Glauber´s realization, also a basic element of Cinema Novo, which made blackness a central focus. It is in Black Cinema that the African descendent redeems his position as a historical subject, as a filmmaker. I demonstrated that there is a Lusophone identity configured in the condition of victim of Euro-colonization, pointing to the Lusophony of democratic horizontality that is established in a struggle of ontological image against the verticality of the imagery hegemony of the Euro-hetero-macho-authoritarian character, determined by the Eurocentric force of Euro-heteronormativity. This research concluded that there is a pedagogical dimension of Black Cinema in which minorities, in a perspective of inclusive contemporaneity, construct the place of speech, showing society the overcoming of excluding anachronism and teaching how they are and how they should be treated.
  • Portuguese language as a distinguishing mark: an East Timorese identity school during the Indonesian occupation Artigos

    Ferreira, Ângelo

    Abstract in English:

Abstract East Timorese fought for 24 years (1975-1999) against the violent Indonesian occupation and the educational effort to make them Indonesians. This research consists of a case study intended to understand the purpose of a school named Externato de São José in maintaining all teaching in the Portuguese language when it was banned and persecuted for delaying effective integration in Indonesia during that period. A qualitative methodology is used under the interpretive paradigm. In order to better understand this school’s objectives, it was decided to listen to its privileged witnesses, carrying out a content analysis of ten semi-structured interviews with former students, teachers, and members of society. The research undertaken reinforces the idea that identity is seductive, that it depends on people’s free adhesion, and projects a sense of belonging to something bigger, to a people with a unique culture, with language, in conjunction with other cultural features, playing a decisive role. Results show 124 occurrences illustrating the school’s aim in promoting the Portuguese language as a distinguishing hallmark of East Timorese cultural identity, being highlighted by the interviewees as the essence of their identity, as a rejection of Indonesian language and cultural integration in Indonesia, or as a recovery of East Timor culture, of Portuguese/Latin influence. This central identity role given to the Portuguese language, either by pro-integration in Indonesia and pro-independence supporters, unified the older generation educated in Portuguese and part of the youth in the struggle for independence, thus contradicting any lasting uncertainties in East Timor society regarding the status of Portuguese as one of the two official languages.

    Abstract in English:

Abstract This article discusses recent research in transnational history of education with an emphasis on the categories that lay at the core of the way in which objects of study are constructed. Oriented by the history of concepts and historical semantics, we first trace the emergence the field of transnational history of education in the confluence of the historically-formed concept of international education and of the transnational research project in historical sciences. We then present an overview of recent trends in this particular field, considering both study areas and theoretical and methodological approaches. We argue that the historical construction of the transnational has an influence in the ways in which we formulate our research questions, and launch an invitation to continue this self-reflexivity into other concepts and categories of the history of education.
  • A review of cultural capital´s concept: contributions to educational research Seção: Traduções

Piotto, Débora C.; Nogueira, Maria Alice

    Abstract in English:

Abstract The text presents the article “Cultural capital and school reproduction: a critical review”, by Hugues Draelants and Magali Ballatore, professors at the Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium, translated by us. Its objective is to explain the reasons why we consider important its diffusion in Brazilian educational environment. The article makes a critical review of the contribution of the cultural capital´s concept, in order to assess its relevance for understanding contemporary processes of social reproduction throughout school education. For this, the authors propose a discussion on the definition of the cultural capital´s concept and on its current school profitability. They also discuss the growing importance of other capital´s types, such as economic and social, and highlight the issue of their conversion into cultural capital. Considering that as important as the conclusions reached by Draelants and Ballatore was the path taken to them, the text brings some highlights of the article with the intention not to summarize or simplify the richness of the discussion undertaken, but instead making an invitation to read it.
