  • Analysis of Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid)/Poly(Isoprene) Polymeric Blend for application as biomaterial

Marques, Douglas Ramos; Santos, Luis Alberto dos; Schopf, Luciano Ferraz; Fraga, José Carlos Soares de

    Resumo em Inglês:

The application of renewable raw materials encourages research in the biopolymers area. The Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid)/Poly(Isoprene) (PLGA/IR) blend combines biocompatibility for application in the health field with excellent mechanical properties. The blend was obtained by solubilization of polymers in organic solvents. To investigate the polymer thermochemical properties, FTIR and DSC were applied. To investigate the composition's influence over polymer mechanical properties, tensile and hardness test were applied. To analyze the blends response in the cell environment, a stent was produced by injection molding process, and Cell Viability Test and Previous Implantability were used. The Infrared spectra show that chemical composition is related only with polymers proportion in the blend. The calorimetry shows a partial miscibility in the blend. The tensile test shows that adding Poly(Isoprene) to Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid) induced a relevant reduction in the Young modulus, tensile stress and tenacity of the material, which was altered from the fragile raw PLGA to a ductile material. The composition did not affect the blend hardness. The cell viability test shows that the blend has potential application as biomaterial, while the first results of implantability indicate that the polymeric stent kept its original position and caused low fibrosis.

Padilha, Giovana da Silva; Mansanares, Virginia; Bartoli, Julio Roberto

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this work, an investigation was made of the modification of film surface of Poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) using the plasma polymerization technique. PMMA films 10 µm thick were obtained by Spin-Coating starting from a chloroform solution (15.36% w/w). The films were exposed to the plasma of CHF3 at different gas pressures and exposure times to increase the thickness of fluorinated polymers onto PMMA films. The plasma fluorinated optical films were characterized by gravimetry, FTIR-ATR, contact angle of wetting, SEM and AFM. The surface fluorination of PMMA films can be inferred by the increase in contact angle under all experimental conditions, and confirmed with FTIR-ATR analysis. Gravimetry showed an increase of the fluorinated polymer layer over PMMA films, being 1.55 µm thick at 0.7 torr and 40 minutes of plasma exposure. The SEM analysis showed a well-defined layer of fluorinated polymer, with fluorine being detected in the EDS analysis. The film roughness for the fluorinated polymers was around of 200 Å, quite satisfactory for a 1.55 µm cladding.

Simplício, Simone; Santa Maria, Luiz Cláudio de; Costa, Marcos Antônio da Silva; Lucas, Elizabete Fernandes; Queirós, Yure Gomes de Carvalho; Marques, Luiz Rodrigo da Silva; Costa, Luciana da Cunha; Hui, Wang Shu; Silva, Manoel Ribeiro

    Resumo em Inglês:

Magnetic composites have a wide range of potential technological applications; however the evaluation of this material for extraction of phenolic compounds has not been sufficiently studied. Due to its high toxicity and solubility the removal of phenolic compounds from the aquatic environments has critical importance. In this work polymeric composites were prepared by anchoring Ni and Co particles on sulfonatedpoly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) PS-DVB. The PS-DVB beads were synthesized by suspension polymerization and reacted with acetyl sulfate, aiming to obtain sulfonated copolymers. All materials were capable of removing phenol from aqueous solutions. The phenol adsorption kinetics was influenced by the polymer porosity and swelling capacity in water. The composite derivative of the more porous copolymer impregnated with nickel (C1SNi) was the most efficient in phenol removal, with the sorption equilibrium being established more rapidly than for the other composites. The pseudo second-order model was more adequate to describe the phenol adsorption process for the composite C1SNi. The Langmuir model describes successfully the phenol removal by this composite.
  • Thermal & morphological evaluation of linear and radial SEBS-polypropylene blends

Mendienta-García, Martha Belem; Páramo-García, Ulises; Díaz-Zavala, Nancy Patricia; Robledo-Muñiz, Juan Gabriel; Rivera-Armenta, José Luis

    Resumo em Inglês:

Blending of two or even more immiscible polymers is a very useful method to obtain new polymeric materials with ordered and tailored properties. Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE's) are interesting materials for various applications, including the automotive industry, due to their excellent balance between processability and physical properties, especially using hydrogenated styrene-butadiene copolymer. In the present work, two structures of styrene-ethylene/buthylene-styrene (SEBS) triblock copolymer (linear and radial) were blended with polypropylene (PP) using a process aid oil. Three different SEBS-PP ratios were evaluated. Phase behavior was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which confirmed the formation of a single phase material. PP crystallinity was affected by SEBS structure causing a lamellar thinning of crystals. The SEM analysis shows that radial and linear structures of SEBS have different morphology.
  • Use of green coconut shells as an alternative substrate for the production of xanthan gum on different scales of fermentation

Nery, Tatiana Barreto Rocha; Cruz, Antonio José Gonçalves da; Druzian, Janice Izabel

    Resumo em Inglês:

Xanthan, a biopolymer with extensive industrial applications, is commercially produced by fermenting glucose or sucrose using the bacteria Xanthomonas. Green coconut shells, rich in nutrients, could be an alternative substrate to obtain xanthan. This study aimed to evaluate the production and rheological properties of xanthan obtained on different fermentation scales using green coconut shells as the substrate, using its production from sucrose for comparison. Media containing minimal nutritional requirements (carbon, urea, phosphate) were prepared. Upon changing from the conventional medium to the alternative medium there was a 30% increase in production using the shaker and 81% increase using the bioreactor. Increasing the fermentation scale resulted in an increased yield of xanthan and a 30% increase in apparent viscosity. Coconut shells deserve special attention, constituting a possibility for the large scale production of xanthan with cost reduction and application of a residue.
  • Using different catalysts in the chemical recycling of waste from flexible polyurethane foams

Santos, Leonardo M. dos; Carone, Carlos L. P.; Dullius, Jeane; Ligabue, Rosane; Einloft, Sandra

    Resumo em Inglês:

Due to their versatility, polyurethane (PU) foams have many different applications, such as sponges, filling materials in furniture, automotive seats and clothes, among others. It is also one of the main refrigerator components serving as a heat insulating material. As PUs find different application niches, they must be largely produced and, consequently, lots of waste are generated. In this work we intend to contribute to the recycle of this waste. The recovery of polyol from flexible polyurethane foams was carried out using the glycolysis process and testing different catalysts. Grounded polyurethane and a solvent, diethyleneglycol (DEG), were kept at 200 ºC and under nitrogen atmosphere during three hours in the presence of a catalyst. All catalysts tested promoted the polyol mixture formation, with Zinc acetate producing the best depolymerization rate. The catalysts efficiency for the depolymerization reaction follows the order: DBTDL< BTO< HBTO< DEA ≈ Ba(Ac)2< MEA ≈ KAc< Zn(Ac)2.

Zhu, Guoquan; Wang, Fagang; Gao, Qiaochun; Liu, Yuying

    Resumo em Inglês:

A series of poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/poly(butyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (P(BA-co-MMA)) blend films with different P(BA-co-MMA) mole contents were prepared by casting the polymer blend solution in chloroform. Surface morphologies of the PLGAP(BA-co-MMA) blend films were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties of PLGAP(BA-co-MMA) blend films were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile tests, and surface contact angle tests. The introduction of P(BA-co-MMA) could modify the properties of PLGA films.

The purpose of this work was to introduce modified hydrolyzed starches (anionic) as surfactant in a formulation for the encapsulation of benzophenone-3 with a polymer matrix of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), including the study of the influence from the surfactant on the physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were prepared via interfacial deposition of the pre-formed polymer, using an experiment design for the mixtures. The starches were initially hydrolyzed via an enzymatic process and surface tension measurements were performed to assess the ability of surfactant aqueous solutions of hydrolyzed starch for application in nanocapsule formulations. The results indicated that the starches can be employed as surfactant in the formulations, without significantly altering properties such as diameter, polydispersity and encapsulation efficiency.

    Abreu, F. O. M. S.; Cavalcante, L. G.; Doudement, P. V.; Castro, A. M.; Nascimento, A. P.; Matos, J. E. X

In this work, chitosan was obtained from crab-uçá exoskeleton (Ucides cordatus cordatus), where conversion into chitosan was made with two techniques, namely conventional heating and using microwave radiation. The product obtained by radiation (QP) and conventional process (QV) were characterized and compared to a chitosan commercial sample (QC) regarding to the deacetylation degree (GD), viscosity average molar mass (Mz) and related properties. QP presented higher GD than QV and QC samples, with values of 77%, 65% and 71%, respectively. The solubility test showed that QP dissolved more easily in diluted acetic acid than QC, while QV did not dissolve in acid aqueous solution due to the low GD. QP also showed higher Mz than QC, with values of 412.600 g/mol and 336.100 g/mol, respectively. These properties agree with those reported in the literature. Therefore, the synthesis of chitosan from chitin using microwave reaction proved to be successful, since it is easier, faster and less expensive due to the time and energy optimization in comparison to the conventional process. The chitosan sample obtained displayed even better properties than a commercial sample. In addition, this process can be adjusted for production in industrial scale.

This article evaluates the effects of "molecular orientation" on rigid PVC mechanical properties. The subject is introduced and associated to application of Oriented PVC in piping systems, regarding the importance of gelation level on the quality of these products. A mono-axial orientation method is described and tested on an extruded sample, whose efficiency is evaluated and samples are produced with different stretching ratios. Upon increasing the stretching ratio, improvements are observed mainly in the maximum tensile strength, tensile modulus and toughness. On the other hand, deformation at break is decreased.

    Silva, Paulo S. R. C. da; Tavares, Maria I. B.

Nanocomposites based on high-impact polystyrene and nanoclay were prepared and evaluated. Three types of montmorillonite clay modified with quaternary ammonium salt (organically modified montmorillonite - OMMT), designated S4, S7 and B8, and sodium clay (NT-25) were used to obtain the nanomaterials. The insertion of the organophilic clay in HIPS was done by solution intercalation because this process permits good dispersion of the clay in the polymer matrix due to its swelling in the solvent. This swelling was evaluated according to the Foster's method and the most suitable solvent for these clays was chloroform. The nanomaterials obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR), by means of relaxometry, by determining the spin-lattice relaxation time of the hydrogen nuclei in the polymer matrix. The results obtained indicate that the nanomaterials formed were mixed, i.e., part was intercalated and part was exfoliated. Additionally, the proportion of nanoclay that produced nanocomposites with the highest degree of exfoliation was 2%.

Natural rubber (NR) tapped from three clones of the rubber tree [Heveabrasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss. Muell.-Arg.)] over a seven month period was obtained by coagulation of lattices with 10% acid acetic and dried at 65 °C. TG-DTG curves were used to monitor thermal properties of NR. The TG-DTG results indicated very small differences among the clones and tappings, except in the value of Tf-T0, which indicated that the IAC 301 clone suffered the fastest thermal degradation, during decomposition of the dried, raw NR. There was no significant difference in Tg values among clones and tappings.

Tropical countries such as Brazil are rich in a great variety of plant sources of polysaccharides, some of which are not known or explored yet and could have great potential in industrial applications. Some studies report the possible industrial application of cashew gum as substitute for Arabic gum owing to their structural similarity. This study aimed at comparing properties of these gums before and after two treatments of thermoplastic extrusion. The cashew gum raw and processed was found to possess high content of soluble fibers and low ash content, also exhibiting a lower content of minerals in comparison with Arabic gum. The rapid viscosity increased upon processing for Arabic gum, while it decreased for cashew gum. With x-ray diffraction we confirmed the amorphous conformation of the polymer chains of both samples. From the parameters evaluated, we conclude that cashew gum could be used as a replacement for Arabic gum.

PP/organoclay/PP-g-MA/erucamide composites with 5% commercial organo-montmorillonite (Cloisite 20A), 5 and 15% maleated polypropylene as compatibilizer, and 0, 0.5 and 1% erucamide as a co-intercalating agent were prepared by melt intercalation. A masterbatch of compatibilizer and organoclay was compounded in an internal mixer and then diluted in the polypropylene matrix in a corotating twin-screw extruder. The compounds were characterized by x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and mechanical properties. Results indicate that the organoclay acted as a reinforcer. Addition of the co-intercalating agent significantly increased the interlayer spacing of the clay, without notably affecting the mechanical behavior of the composites. Optical microscopy showed the dispersive effect of the screw profile used, which promoted the breaking of clay agglomerates.

This study evaluated the effect of organic solvent concentration on the tensile strength for an experimental adhesive resin containing a ternary photoinitiator system. A monomer blend based on the Bis-GMA, TEGDMA and HEMA was used as a model dental adhesive resin. Two photoinitiation systems were used: a binary system camphorquinone (CQ) and ethyl 4-dimethylamine benzoate (EDAB)] and a ternary system CQ, EDAB and diphenyliodonium hexafluorphosphate (DPIHFP)]. Varied ethanol concentrations were added to the resins, viz. 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 wt%. The ultimate tensile strength test was used to investigate the influence of the solvent amount on the resistance of resins. Furthermore, the use of iodonium salt in photoinitiation system increased the cohesive strength when compared with the binary system. Regardless of solvent concentration, the cohesive strength of polymers containing diphenyliodonium was higher than for the binary photoinitiator system.

Nanocomposites of polyamide 6 with organoclay were prepared by melt intercalation and their rheological and mechanical properties were studied. The clay was treated with the quaternary ammonium salt (Cetremide) and characterized by Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed the incorporation of salt in the clay and its organophilization. A master was prepared with PA6/clay (1:1) by weight and this was added to the pure polyamide 6 to reach the nominal proportion of 3% of clay, using a corrotacional twin screw extruder. The samples were molded by injection and characterized by: capillary rheometry, XRD, TEM and mechanical testing (tensile and impact). The results of capillary rheometry showed that the presence of organoclay in the PA6 increased the viscosity of the systems. With XRD and TEM, it was verified that all systems presented predominantly exfoliated structure. The tensile properties of the nanocomposites were better than those of pure polyamide 6.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) water-proof membranes are used as coatings in vinasse (leachate from sugar cane) storage tanks. The leachate is pumped into the tanks at temperatures of 80-90 °C. Due to these high temperatures and acidity of the waste, these membranes can be degraded, cracked and then loose the function for which they have been designed. This may cause contamination of the soil and groundwater. This study evaluated the effect of vinasse in HDPE membranes after 4 months of exposure in a controlled environment. An aggressive, alkaline pH liquid (sodium hydroxide) was also used. The objective was to evaluate the membrane resistance in contact with acidic and alkaline residues. Physical and mechanical tests, measurement of the carbon black content and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to determine degradation of polymer membranes after chemical immersion. While sodium hydroxide resulted caused only minor changes in the physical properties, vinasse induced a thickness change of 7.8%. With immersion in vinasse, an average decrease in strength and deformability (yield) of 34% and 23.5% were measured, respectively. The stiffness increased by 7.8% (average) and the tear strength decreased by 2.7% (average).
