Celebration time for the Bauru School of Dentistry at the IADR 86th General Session & Exhibition, Toronto

Dear Readers,

I am pleased to share with all of you three outstanding achievements of the Bauru School of Dentistry announced at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) 86th General Session & Exhibition, Toronto.

The first is the election of Professor Maria Fidela de Lima Navarro as IADR Vice-president. Throughout the next four years Dr. Navarro will proceed to the President-elect position of IADR before becoming President and finally Immediate Past President. For the first time Latin America and Caribbean Region have a member holding such a distinguished position. For more than 40 years, Dr. Navarro has been involved with dental research, since her time as an undergraduate student in the first graduating class of the Bauru School of Dentistry, until becoming the first woman Dean of this school. Now, as the Secretary-General of the University of São Paulo, she faces a wide range of new challenges, not only establishing strong collaborations across Brazil, but also around the world. All of this has been facilitated by the fact that, during her academic career, she has had the chance to work with a strong team of colleagues while organizing international seminars, conferences, and symposiums. These same skills have served her very well in her roles in the IADR and many other scientific societies. In addition, these relationships have helped her to understand the complexity of trying to establish new research partnerships in a complex world with political and cultural challenges. This rich history provided a basis for her to help promote IADR meetings, engage new scientists in a wide range of countries in almost all continents, and foster the missions of the association. We wish Dr. Navarro the best of luck in this challenging journey during the next four years!

The second excellent news was about the Basil G. Bibby Young Investigator Award, whose winner was Dr. Marília Afonso Rabelo Buzalaf, former undergraduate student and currently Professor at our school. The Cariology Group of IADR has established the above Award for the purpose of promoting the interest of young scientists and students in dental caries research and related matters, and to acknowledge excellence of the research conducted by young investigators. The Award, sponsored by Unilever, is in honor of the founding President of the Cariology Group, Dr. Basil G. Bibby. The Award was made on the basis of general excellence in research related to cariology as demonstrated by written or published reports by Professor Buzalaf.

Finally, another great accomplishment was the IADR/Colgate "Research in Prevention" Travel Award. This year one of the winners was Juliane Guimarães de Carvalho, graduate student in Oral Biology at the Bauru School of Dentistry, advised by Professor Marília Buzalaf. The prize is directed to young investigators (up to five years post-graduation from dental, dental hygiene, specialty training, or pre-PhD), IADR members, who have submitted an abstract which has a preventive component. The objective of this award program is to encourage young investigators to undertake research in the prevention of oral diseases and to facilitate their presentation of this work to the international dental and oral health research community. Six awards are granted each year - one person from each of the following regions: North America (Canada, United States, and Mexico), South America, Europe (including Israel), Africa (including Middle East) and the Pan Asian Pacific region (including the Indian sub-continent, Asia, China, Australia/New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, excluding Hawaii and Guam). The Award is supported by a generous donation from the Colgate-Palmolive Company.

I could not miss the opportunity to present my sincere compliments to Professors Navarro and Buzalaf as well as Juliane Guimarães de Carvalho for their remarkable contributions and for putting Brazil and the Bauru School of Dentistry in such a distinguished position.

Kind regards,

Carlos F. Santos, DDS, PhD, Associate Professor
