LONG-DISTANCE TEACHING AT THE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF VENOMS AND VENOMOUS ANIMALS

The Center for the Study of Venoms and Venomous Animals - CEVAP-UNESP has always been concerned with the teaching of Toxinology. In 1994, CEVAP’s members launched a book named Venenos animais: aspectos clínicos e terapêuticos dos acidentes por animais peçonhentos. This book has a multidisciplinary approach, including subjects related to medical, veterinary, pharmaceutical, and biological areas. In 1995, CEVAP’s members published the first Brazilian electronic journal dedicated to Toxinology, The Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins. This has been indexed in Brazilian and International databases, such as BIOSIS, CAB International, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts Service, Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Awareness in Biological Sciences, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, LILACS, NISC Colorado – Wildlife Review Abstracts, Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory, VENOMS – the Atheris Database on Venomous Animals, and Zoological Records, In 1996, CEVAP sponsored by UNIMED do Brasil and TBR, developed the first Video Library on Toxinology, including 19 video classes about microorganism, plant, and animal toxins. In 1997, CEVAP developed the Virtual Center on Toxinology (http://www.cevap.org.br), including multiple aspects related to Toxinology. This center also included links to the International Society on Toxinology, Sites of Brazilian Institutes, and information on Medical Emergency.

Since 1998, The Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins has been part of the SciELO Project - Scientific Electronic Library Online - the first Brazilian virtual library developed by BIREME/FAPESP (http://www.scielo.br/jvat).

We have recently launched a CD-ROM entitled "Snake Envenoming" – the first of a series about animal envenoming. Our project for the beginning of the New Millennium is to start long-distance courses for graduate students. These courses will be a major contribution to education in Brazil.

Happy New Millennium!
