On Stenocorus vittatus Fabricius, 1801 (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, Cerambycinae)

ABSTRACT

A forgotten synonymy between Stenocorus vittatus Fabricius, 1801FABRICIUS, J.C. 1801. Systema eleutheratorum secundum ordines, genera, species: adiectis synonymis, locis, observationibus, descriptionibus Kiliae, Bibliopoli Academici Novi. v.2, 687p. and Cerambyx globosus Olivier, 1795 (= Xystrocera globosa ) is corroborated. Consequently, the former is removed from Alloesia Chevrolat, 1862, and formally excluded from the Brazilian fauna.

INTRODUCTION

During the process of identification of specimens received from Stéphane Le Tirant (Insectarium de Montréal, Québec, Canada), I discovered a nomenclatural problem involving a species currently placed in the genus Alloesia Chevrolat, 1862.

Currently, Alloesiaencompasses four species, all from South America: A. bicolor Waterhouse, 1880, from Ecuador; A. bivittata Chevrolat, 1862, from Venezuela; A. chlorophanaChevrolat, 1862, from Colombia; and A. vittata( Fabricius, 1801FABRICIUS, J.C. 1801. Systema eleutheratorum secundum ordines, genera, species: adiectis synonymis, locis, observationibus, descriptionibus Kiliae, Bibliopoli Academici Novi. v.2, 687p.), from Brazil ( Monné, 2015MONNÉ, M.A. 2015. Catalogue of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) of the Neotropical Region. Part I. Subfamily Cerambycinae Available from: Available from: www.cerambyxcat.com (Accessed July 2015).

). The latter is the object of this short work.

RESULTS

Fabricius (1801)FABRICIUS, J.C. 1801. Systema eleutheratorum secundum ordines, genera, species: adiectis synonymis, locis, observationibus, descriptionibus Kiliae, Bibliopoli Academici Novi. v.2, 687p.described Stenocorus vittatusas follows (translation): "22. Stenocoruswith thorax shortened, sub-rounded, reddish, elytra testaceous: with shortened, dark-blue band. From Brazil. Dom. Weber. Stature and size of the previous [ Stenocorus strepens]. Antennae longer than body, ferruginous. Head ferruginous. Thorax rounded, shortened, rough, ferruginous, with great dark-blue ring. Elytra testaceous: outer margin and shortened central band dark-blue. Body and legs ferruginous."

( Schönherr 1817SCHÖNHERR, C.J. 1817. Synonymia Insectorum, oder: Versuch einer Synonymia aller bisher bekannten Insecten; nach Fabricii Systema Eleutheratorum &c. geordnet Skara, Lewerentzischen Buchdruekerey. v.1, pt. 3, xi + 506p.: 408) only mentioned the species, as Stenochorus vittatus, without any additional comment.

( Bates 1873BATES, H.W. 1873. On the Longicorn Coleoptera of Japan. The Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Ser. 4 12(68): 148-156.: 151) synonymized Stenocorus vittatuswith Xystrocera globosa(Olivier, 1795): "Many examples, agreeing with others from Cambodia, &c. Fabricius erroneously cited Brazil as the locality of his Stenocorus vittatus, which is evidently the same as Xystrocera globose." According to Monné (2015)MONNÉ, M.A. 2015. Catalogue of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) of the Neotropical Region. Part I. Subfamily Cerambycinae Available from: Available from: www.cerambyxcat.com (Accessed July 2015).

, X. globosa(Xystrocerini) occurs in Asia, Java, Madagascar, Philippines, and was introduced in Puerto Rico. Hua (2002)HUA, L.-Z. 2002. List of Chinese insects. Zhongshan (Sun Yat-sen) Guangzhou, University Press. v.2, 612p.listed the species in Burma, Celebes, China, Egypt, Hawaii, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Pacific Islands, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Aurivillius (1912)AURIVILLIUS, C. 1912. Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 39, Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae. Berlin, W. Junk. 574 p.placed Stenocorus vittatusin AlloesiaChevrolat, 1862, a genus from South America. Aurivillius (1912)AURIVILLIUS, C. 1912. Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 39, Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae. Berlin, W. Junk. 574 p.did not explain the reason and, also, did not list the work neither the synonymy proposed by Bates (1873)BATES, H.W. 1873. On the Longicorn Coleoptera of Japan. The Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Ser. 4 12(68): 148-156.. Even in the references of Xystrocera globosaAurivillius (1912)AURIVILLIUS, C. 1912. Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 39, Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae. Berlin, W. Junk. 574 p.did not list Bates (1873)BATES, H.W. 1873. On the Longicorn Coleoptera of Japan. The Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Ser. 4 12(68): 148-156.. Apparently, a few authors mentioned this synonymy, as for example, ( Harold 1874HAROLD, E. 1874. Literatur. Coleopterologische Hefte 12: 98-148.: 142), and ( Schönfeldt 1887SCHÖNFELDT, H. 1887. Catalog der Coleopteren von Japan mit Angabe der bezüglichen Beschreibungen und der sicher bekannten Fundorte. Jahrbücher des Nassauischen Vereins für Natyurkunde 40: 29-204.: 158).

According to Zimsen (1964)ZIMSEN, E. 1964. The type material of I. C. Fabricius Copenhagen, Munksgaard. 656p.: "Friedrich Weber is often mentioned by Fabricius as a collector, and most of the types Weber describes in "Observationes Entomologiae" Kiliae 1801 are found in Fabricius' collection." Zimsen (1964)ZIMSEN, E. 1964. The type material of I. C. Fabricius Copenhagen, Munksgaard. 656p.did not find the type of Stenocorus vittatus, but did not affirm that it is lost. Nevertheless, according to her: ""Lost" means that I am absolutely certain no type specimens remain. But it must be realized that the possibility of locating a type even in cases where "lost" is not expressly stated, is in most cases less than minimal."

After Aurivillius (1912)AURIVILLIUS, C. 1912. Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 39, Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae. Berlin, W. Junk. 574 p., S. vittatuswas mentioned as Alloesia vittata, only in checklists or catalogues ( e.g., Blackwelder, 1946BLACKWELDER, R.E. 1946. Checklist of the coleopterous insects of Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and South America. Part 4. Bulletin of the United States National Museum 185: 551-763.; Monné, 1994MONNÉ, M.A. 1994. Catalogue of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) of the western hemisphere. Part X. Subfamily Cerambycinae: Tribes Rhopalophorini, Heteropsini, Thyrsiini, Agallissini, Platyarthrini, Holopterini, Lissonotini São Paulo, Sociedade Brasileira de Entomologia. 81p.; Monné & Giesbert, 1994MONNÉ, M.A. & GIESBERT, E.F. 1994. Checklist of the Cerambycidae and Disteniidae (Coleoptera) of the Western Hemisphere Burbank, Wolfsgarden Books. 409p.; Monné 2005MONNÉ, M.A. 2005. Catalogue of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) of the Neotropical Region. Part I. Subfamily Cerambycinae. Zootaxa 946: 1-765.; Monné, 2015MONNÉ, M.A. 2015. ).

Following Zimsen (1964)ZIMSEN, E. 1964. The type material of I. C. Fabricius Copenhagen, Munksgaard. 656p., it is almost impossible that Aurivillius had the opportunity to examine the type of Stenocorus vittatus. It is hard to believe that the specimen was lost between the work by Aurivillius (1912)AURIVILLIUS, C. 1912. Coleopterorum Catalogus, pars 39, Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae. Berlin, W. Junk. 574 p.and Zimsen (1964)ZIMSEN, E. 1964. The type material of I. C. Fabricius Copenhagen, Munksgaard. 656p.. If the specimen was in the Zoological Museum of University of Copenhagen (Denmark) or in The Zoological Museum Kiel (Germany), or even in another museum in 1912, probably it would be there in 1964. Consequently, I am assuming that the placement of Fabricius' species in Alloesiawas based merely on assumption; in addition, Aurivillius was apparently unaware of the synonymy proposed by Bates (1873)BATES, H.W. 1873. On the Longicorn Coleoptera of Japan. The Annals and Magazine of Natural History, Ser. 4 12(68): 148-156.. Thus, I consider the transference from StenocorusGeoffroy, 1762 (Rhagiini) to Alloesia(Heteropsini), as well as the "revalidation" of the species, should not be followed and that Stenocorus vittatusshould be considered as a synonym of Xistrocera globose. Moreover, the original description of S. vittatusactually agrees well with X. globose, which reinforces Bates' opinion.

Xystrocera globosawas described from "environs de Batavia" [currently Jakarta, Indonesia] and, as seen above, has never been recorded in Brazil.
