Influence of salt concentrations in nutrient solution on tolerance to aluminum toxicity in wheat cultivars

Resumos

The aluminum tolerance of ten wheat cultivars was studied in nutrient solutions using three different levels of this element combined with four different salt concentrations. The tolerance was evaluated by measuring, the root growth in an aluminum-free complete nutrient solution after a previous treatment in Al added solutions of equal, one half, one fifth and one tenth the salt concentration of the aluminum-free solution. The wheat cultivars Siete Cerros, Tobari-66 and INIA-66 were sensitive; IAC-15 was moderately sensitive; Alondra-S-46 and IAC-17 showed moderate tolerance; BH-1146, IAC-13, IAC-5, and C-3 were tolerant to the presence of increasing concentrations of Al³+ in the treatment nutrient solution. The aluminum toxicity symptom (inhibition of root growth) was dependent on the salt concentration and the amount of aluminum in the treatment solution. For the same level of Al3+ toxicity increased when the concentration of the nutrients decreased in the solution, for all the studied cultivars. Apparently wheat tolerance to Al3+ is a relative rather than absolute characteristic, depending on nutrient availability.

SUMMARY

The aluminum tolerance of ten wheat cultivars was studied in nutrient solutions using three different levels of this element combined with four different salt concentrations.

The tolerance was evaluated by measuring, the root growth in an aluminum-free complete nutrient solution after a previous treatment in Al added solutions of equal, one half, one fifth and one tenth the salt concentration of the aluminum-free solution.

The wheat cultivars Siete Cerros, Tobari-66 and INIA-66 were sensitive; IAC-15 was moderately sensitive; Alondra-S-46 and IAC-17 showed moderate tolerance; BH-1146, IAC-13, IAC-5, and C-3 were tolerant to the presence of increasing concentrations of Al3+ in the treatment nutrient solution.
