SUMMARY

The root system of a heart palm plant was studied aiming better understanding of problems like spacing, application of mineral fertilizers and competition between this palm and shade trees.

Two methods were used to determine root weight and volume. The root system of Euterpe edulis Mart. was found to be mainly superficial, with the 58% concentrated in the twenty centimeters soil top layer. In this layer the finer roots were found densely spread up to four meters from the stem. The maximum depth reached by the roots was 1.30 meter. Both methods employed were found to be efficient to study the root system of the heart palm plant.
