A preliminary report on conservation of seeds of hearts of palm

SUMMARY
Under normal conditions, seeds of Euterpe edulis Mart, lose quickly their viability. In order to find out best procedure to maintain the germination power in a high level, five trials were conduced. In these trials seeds of hearts of palm were kept at different conditions of temperature and relative humidity during a period of five months. Moisture determination and germination tests were made after 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 days of storage.
Results indicated that high humidity is essential for preservation of the viability of those seeds. Storage under low temperature (5-10°C) and use of hermetically and half closed vials, prolonged and maintained the viability of Euterpe edulis seeds on a reasonable level after five months of storage.
