SUMMARY

The spacings tested comprised three distances of planting between the rows (80, 100, and 120 centimeters) combined with two distances between the plants in the rows (20 and 60 centimeters), from which resulted six spacing plots, e.g.: 80 x 20, 80 x 60, 100 x 20, 100 x 60, 120 x 20, and 120 x 60 centimeters.

Eight harvestings were done, which results led to the following preliminary conclusions:

a) Under the conditions of the experiment (which represents most of the ecological conditions prevailing in large sections of Central Brazil), 80 x 20cm and 80 x 60 cm plots yielded more essential oil per hectare than 120 x 20 and 120 x 60 cm plots.

b) Plots spaced 80 cm between the rows yielded more oil per hectare than plots with distances from 100 to 120 cm, independently of the distance between the plants in the row.

c) Under the experimental conditions tried, it may be recommended 80 x 60 cm as the best spacing for palmarosa.
