Brazilian tobacco streak virus strain found in tomato plantings

SUMMARY
Although tomatoes had been found to be susceptible to infection with several strains of the Brazilian tobacco streak virus in greenhouse experiments, until recently this virus had not been encountered in tomato plantings. In a survey made in tomato fields in the neighborhood of Itatiba, tomato plants were collected thai presented malformed leaves. From these a severe necrotic strain of virus was recovered that induced symptoms on a number of host plants similar to those obtained by inoculation with strains of the Brazilian tobacco streak virus complex. The relationship between the tomato isolates and other strains of the complex was verified by cross protection tests and in serological diffusion tests. Also, the in vitro properties of the tomato virus were found to be nearly similar to those found for other strains of the group.
