Effect of hormones on rooting rose cuttings

Hermes Moreira de Souza; Romeu Inforzato

SUMMARY

Groups of 15 cuttings, taken from two rose plants (Rosa canina and R. chinensis), were treated with five different plant hormones. The treatment consisted in the immersion of the lower end of the cuttings in a solution of the hormone for 24 hours or in dipping it in the powdery preparations. The cuttings were afterwards rooted in boxes filled with sand and kept in a greenhouse. The hormone treatments induced a high percentage of rooting. The beta indolbutiric and alfa naftalenacetic acids gave the best results. The cuttings that were treated with these hormones showed larger and more vigorous roots, as well as better foliage, than those that received the other treatments.
