SUMMARY

Tomato plants showing a type of acropetal necrosis have been noticed among derivatives from crosses between Lycopersicon esculentum L. pimpinellifolium.

The symptoms of acropetal necrosis are not developed until the plants become 50 to 70 days old, and usually their appearence coincides with profuse flowering. The symptoms shown by affected plants are remarkably similar to those caused by viruses, appearing as necrotic lesions with concentric zonation, concentric rings, and leaf drop. Transmission attempts by mechanical methods were negative, and tests by approach-grafting also failed, although the normal and necrotic graft components had remained united organically for several months.

Observations made on progenies of plants with acropetal necrosis showed that all plants of some progenies showed acropetal necrosis, whereas others segregated into acropetal necrosis and normal plants. A series of crosses was made to determine the mode of inheritance of the factors responsible for acropetal necrosis. The results indicated that this characteristic was controlled by a dominant factor N, normal plants being nn. Although the severity of necrosis varied, it was not possible to correlate its degree to the heterozygous or homozygous condition of the plants for N.
