Visual outcome in patients with traumatic hyphema: prospective study of 43 cases

RESUMO

Um estudo prospectivo de 43 casos consecutivos de hifema traumático, com acompanhamento ambulatorial, foi realizado em São Paulo, no período de 01/06/93 a 30/01/94.

O sexo masculino foi o mais acometido (6,4:1) e a média de idade dos pacientes foi de 20,8 anos. Intervenção cirúrgica foi necessária em 5 pacientes.

Ressangramento foi observado em 2 (5,4%) pacientes, e não teve influência na acuidade visual final. A recessão angular foi observada em 18 pacientes entre os 23 em que foi possível realizar gonioscopia, sendo que 1 (5,5%) desenvolveu glaucoma necessitando intervenção cirúrgica.

Foi observado um pior resultado visual final nos pacientes que tiveram lesões de segmento posterior.

SUMMARY

A prospective study of 43 consecutive cases of traumatic hyphema was conducted in São Paulo from June 1, 1993 to January 30, 1994. There was a 6.4:1 male/female ratio and the average age was 20.8 years.

Rebleeding ocurred in 2 (5.4%) patients and had no influence in final visual acuity. The study revealed angle recession in 18 patients among 23 in whom gonioscopy was performed, and it was associated with secondary glaucoma in 1 (5.5%) case that required surgery for adequate IOP control.

We observed that final visual acuity was worse in patients with posterior segment injuries.
