Memory, historiography and politics: The independence of Brazil, 200 years later

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the origins of certain types of academic and non-academic knowledge about the Independence of Brazil, examining them as an interplay of permanent tension between memory, politics and the writing of history. For 200 years, this tension has accompanied the country’s Independence, ensuring it as a central condition in the history of Brazil and reinforcing its relevance today.
