RESUMO
Foram estudados laboratorialmente casos diagnosticados clinicamente como endoftalmite, no período compreendido entre 1985 a 1993, num total de 134 casos. O fator desencadeante mais freqüente foi a intervenção cirúrgica (66,2%), seguido pelo trauma (25,4%). Dos 134 casos, 52 apresentaram cultura positiva (39%). O agente etiológico predominante foi o Staphylococcus aureus. Quanto à sensibilidade aos antibióticos, todos os microrganismos eram sensíveis à vancomicina, cefalotina, gentamicina e tobramicina.

SUMMARY
We reviewed 134 cases with clinical diagnosis of endophthalmitis sent to our Microbiology Service. Cataract surgery was the main cause of endophthalmitis (66.2%), followed by trauma (25.4%). The most frequent isolated microrganism was Staphylococcus aureus. All of them were suscetible to cephalotyn, vancomicyn, gentamicyn and tobramicyn.
