Instructions to authors

Scope and Policy

Topoi. Revista de História’s main target audience is scholars and students of the disciplines within Social Sciences and Humanities. It publishes original articles, essays, interviews, debates, translated works and critical reviews in History. It  follows a rolling submission deadline policy.

Topoi. Revista de História follows a double-blind peer review process. Submitted manuscripts first obtain a preliminary approval by the Editorial Board. They are then evaluated by two outside reviewers. If there is disagreement between the reviewers, the work goes to a third reviewer. Final acceptance depends on the reviewers’ recommendation, on the author’s or authors’ compliance with the requests for whatever changes are deemed necessary, and on the final approval by the Editorial Board.

Book reviews and essays are evaluated by the editors, and are not send to reviewers. Likewise, translations of previously published articles depend exclusively on the approval by the Editorial Board.

Authors must inform the editors about any potential conflict of interest, including but not limited to political or financial constrains connected to the research. When necessary, authors should acknowledge, in the first footnote of the text, the institution or funding agency which supported the research pertinent to the manuscript.

The Topoi the editorial board tools for online plagiarism detection, as Plagium, TurnitinPlagiarism and iThenticate.

Manuscripts organization and format

We encourage the authors, before they submit their manuscripts, to check all the following guidelines. Topo does not evaluate articles or essays that ignore one or more of the substantive, stylistic, or formatting preparations or procedures stated below.

1) Articles, or essays, should have between 40,000 and 60,000 characters with spaces, including notes and references.
2) Book reviews should have between 10,000 and 18,000 characters with spaces. Only works published in the last two years, (or four years, in case of foreign publications) or titles out of print but with a recent new edition, will be considered for reviews. Taken into account the requirements for historical approaches, reviews on other expressions of culture such as films, exhibitions, plays etc. may also be considered.
3) Translations should have between 40,000 and 70,000 characters with spaces, including notes and references. Submission of translations must include legal permission by the author of the original text.
4) Except for translations, submitted manuscripts must be original and unpublished, should not be under consideration by other publication outlets and should not contain any indication of authorship in the text. The Editorial Board may verify the occurrence of double submission, plagiarism and other intellectual misconduct. Manuscripts may include the authors’ previously published material only when clearly acknowledged and when the manuscript does represent significant original contribution.
5) Submissions should always be electronic documents, in Microsoft Word, OpenDocument or RTF format. If they contain images, illustrations, tables and/or graphics, these should be included in the text. Tables and graphs are to be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, followed by a title. Images, in JPG format, are numbered consecutively in Arabic numbers, and must include captions with the term Figure, and with attribution of sources. Authors should delete from the file any information that might identify the authorship of the work.
6) A separate file in the same format described above, shall contain the author(s)’ personal data (full name, address, phone, email), as well as a brief biography, including degree(s), institutional affiliation and most relevant publications (three references maximum).
7) The sections of an article or essay are, in this order: title, title in English, resumo and palavras-chaves (in Portuguese), abstract and keywords, and bibliographic references. Authors should provide a resumo (in Portuguese) in a single paragraph, maximum 10 lines (700 to 1,500 characters with spaces), followed by five palavras-chaves (also in Portuguese). An abstract and keywords in English should also follow, with the same requirements. Topoi adopt footnotes, with complete reference, numbered consecutively with arabic algarisms.
8) Articles and essays must include in the first page the title in Portuguese and English, in Times New Roman 12-point bold font, centered; only the first word is capitalized (and any proper noun in the title, when appropriate). Book reviews must have a title (in Portuguese and English), followed by the complete reference of the reviewed piece. Reviews do not need abstract, keyword, or references, but may include footnotes when absolutely necessary
9) Subtitles for articles or essays, when appropriate, should be in bold. Only the first word (or any proper noun in the subtitle) is capitalized. Line spacing between the previous paragraph and the subtitle is one blank line, while between the subtitle and the next paragraph there is none.
10) Text should be in Times New Roman 12-point font; fully justified; standard tab (1.25 cm) at the beginning of each paragraph; line spacing 1.5; A4 page size; top, bottom, left and right margins should be set at 2.5 cm.
11) Block quotations are set off from the main text as a paragraph, without quotation marks, with 1.5 cm of left indentation, in Times New Roman 11-point font, single line spacing. Quotations with less than three lines are included in the body of the text, in run-in quotes, between quotation marks, regular size font. Italics should be used only for words and excerpts in foreign language.
12) Quotations in foreign language should appear in translation in the main text; the original, untranslated text should be in a footnote, with clear indication of the source of the translation.
13) Footnotes are typed  in normal Times New Roman 10-point size, single line spacing, left-justified. They may be bibliographic or explicative (the journal guidelines do not accept in-text author-date citation style).  Bibliographic references are also listed at the end of the article in alphabetic order.
14) Bibliographic references in the footnotes should follow ABNT guidelines. See examples below:
