Journal history

Revista Ceres is a bimonthly Scientific Journal of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, that publishes original articles related to plant production; soil and plant nutrition; plant breeding applied to agriculture; plant health; physiology and morphology applied to agriculture; vegetative and seminiferous propagation; agricultural engineering; animal production and health applied to agriculture.

In August 1939, the Escola Superior de Agricultura e Veterinária de Minas Gerais (College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of Minas Gerais), now the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Federal University of Viçosa), published the first issue of Ceres. The name was extended to Revista Ceres from September/October 1944. Its first board of directors was formed by the eminent Professors Nello de Moura Rangel, Geraldo Gonçalves Carneiro, Octavio Drummond, Edgard de Vasconcelos Barros and Arlindo de Paula Gonçalves. Today, after more than 70 years of existence, it is one of the oldest agricultural journals in Brazil.

Initially, the journal published both original scientific papers and technical communications, but, over the years, it has become increasingly scientific and the last technical communications were published in 1959. Currently, the journal publishes only articles written in English as a means to provide greater visibility to papers.

Since 2008, Revista Ceres has provided open access to its articles at the site www.ceres.ufv.br. Subscription is not currently required to access Revista Ceres contents online.

In line with our values, we believe that freely available scientific knowledge to the whole (national and international) community provides greater dissemination and democratization of knowledge, resulting in faster and consistent technological advances.

Anti-plagiarism policy

Revista Ceres is one of the oldest and most traditional periodicals in Brazil. Therefore, we value the quality, reputation, and originality of the publications. In this sense, the manuscripts sent to the Revista Ceres must be unpublished. Texts, tables, and figures may not have been previously published in other scientific dissemination vehicles. Therefore, the authors should assume the responsibility that the submitted articles are original and that they do not contain parts of texts, data, tables or figures, previously published.

The faking of data is a serious misconduct.

To ensure the originality of the published works, Revista Ceres uses the CrossRef Similarity Check  software as an antiplagiarism tool.

Instructions to authors

1. Submissions

All manuscripts must be submitted online at www.ceres.ufv.br.

2. Types of articles

The Journal publishes full-length research papers, short communications, invited review articles and letters to the editor.

Standard research papers: Should report complete and original work, in which the reproducibility of results is clearly established. The full text should not exceed 25 pages, including references, figures and tables.

Short communications: Should report conclusive results and not preliminary data. It is an alternative format to describe, more concisely, partial results of a larger work, or reporting conclusive results based on a smaller amount of data. The full text should not exceed 15 printed pages, including references, figures and tables.

Reviews: Should be an in-depth report on the state-of-the-art of a particular topic written at the invitation of the Editorial Board, with unlimited number of pages.

Letters to the Editor: Should present, in an informal way, technical and scientific topics of interest to the agricultural and biological sciences community. Their publication will be determined by the Editorial Board.

3. Structure of the article and short-communications

Manuscripts should have the following format:

a. Title
The title should have no more than 20 words, centered on the page and in bold. Only the first word should be with the first letter capitalized and the others in lowercase, except the necessary cases (for example, scientific names; Phaseolus vulgaris). When needed, the footnote is introduced at its final using superscript Arabic number (see footnote item).

b. Abstract
The word “ABSTRACT” should be written in upper case letter, aligned to the left and in bold type. This section consists of no more than 200 words in one paragraph. 7. Norms for citing references in the text

Citation in the text
References should be cited in the text, following the format: (Author, Year), (Author & Author, Year), (Author et al., Year) or (Silva, 1999; Arariki & Borges, 2003; Santos et al., 2007), always in ascending chronological order. Reference should be cited at the end of a period expressing a complete idea. When the authors' names are an integral part of the text, the date of publication is cited in parentheses, just after the author's name is mentioned, according to examples: Fontes (2008), Borges & Loreno (2014), Batista et al. (2016).

Citation of a citation
Every effort should be made to consult the original document. However, this is not always possible. In this case, information already mentioned by other authors may be reproduced. The following procedure can be used: the last name of the author of the document not consulted is cited in the text with the year of publication, followed by the expression “cited by” and the last name of the author of the document consulted with the year of publication; the complete reference of the source consulted should be included in the list of references.

Personal communication
Personal communication is not part of the list of references, so it is placed only in a footnote. The author’s last name is followed by the expression “personal communication,” the date of the communication, name, state, and country of the Institution to which the author is linked

8. Norms for figures and tables

Figures and tables must be placed after their citation in the text. They should be numbered with Arabic numerals, with the caption positioned below the figures and above the tables.

Figures and tables should not repeat the same data. Figures submitted in electronic format must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, in JPG format. Any illustration that has already been published must contain, below the legend, data on the source (author, date) from which it was extracted.

The full bibliographic reference related to the source of the illustration should appear in the References section.

a. Tables
The term refers to the set of alphanumeric data ordered in rows and columns. It should be constructed only with horizontal separation lines in the header and at the end of the table. The caption initially receives the word Table, followed by the order number in Arabic numerals, separated from the table statement by two points and is referred to in the text as Table. Columns made up of fractional numbers; these should be aligned with the comma.

b. Figures
The term refers to any illustration consisting of or presenting lines and dots: drawing, photograph, graphic, flowchart, layout, etc. The drawings, graphs, etc. should be very clear. The captions initially receive the word Figure, followed by the order number in Arabic numerals separated from the figure sentence by a colon and is referred to in the text as "Figure".

9. Costs

The paper will be published after the payment of a fee of BRL 500.00. Payment must be made when the corresponding author receives the typographic proof and will be done exclusively in the form of Electronic Billing. In possession of the printed billing, you will simply pay it in a bank agency or automatic teller and send a copy to the email used to send the proof. For deposits made with not identified authors (resources of agreements, departments, secretaries, etc.), it is requested to inform, by e-mail, the date, and the billing number.

10. Privacy Policy

Names and addresses informed in this journal are exclusively used for services provided by this publication. They are not made available for other purposes or third parties.
