RBH, as an academic journal linked to the National Association of History (ANPUH), founded in 1981, has the mission of disseminating the most significant results of historical research, serving as a reference for the evolution of the national historiographic debate and the strengthening of its integration in the international circuit of the production of knowledge in the area of History. 

It has sections for individual articles, dossiers, debate articles, interviews, and reviews, and publishes only original and unpublished reflections. Submissions accepted in Portuguese, Spanish, or English.

Articles can be submitted for publication in RBH from those who have doctorates in History or related areas. Submission of reviews and interviews is open to those with master’s degrees and doctoral students.

RBH offers free and immediate access to its content, in accordance with the principle that freely making scientific knowledge available to the public leads to a greater democratization of knowledge. 

RBH does not charge submission or publication charges.

RBH publishes its issues quarterly.

RBH endorses the principles of Open Science in relation to the publication of manuscripts which were previously deposited in a non-commercial preprint server (such as SciELO Preprints, SocArXic and Zenodo), once it had not been simultaneously submitted to peer review in another periodical. The responsible author has to state whether the manuscript has been deposited in a preprint server and must supply the corresponding DOI.

RBH accepts texts derived from theses and dissertations. However, these texts must have the format of a scientific article and the conclusion text must be totally new.

RBH is committed to ethnical criteria for publication and zeal for mechanisms which allow the identification of plagiary, bad practices, fraud, possible violations of ethics, and the taking of lawsuits. We emphatically recommend that authors follow these instructions in the texts submitted to the journal:

• Reference in an explicit manner the data acquired, analyzed and interpreted in other publications;
• Cite any intellectual content from other author(s);
• Indicate as authors only those who participated in an active and substantial form in all the phases of the research and writing of the article (as stipulated in the multi-author item);
• Do not omit from the list of authors any researcher(s) completely involved in the research and the writing of the article.
• We recommend the consultation of the following in case of doubts by the author(s):
• Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
• Basic directives for the integrity of scientific activity from the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

All texts submitted to RBH go through a procedure to verify the textual similarity of submitted manuscripts. This aims to guarantee that eventual appropriations of texts of third parties are correctly marked in the version to be published, as is expected in academic products. If necessary, additional explanations referring to the results of reports of similarities shall be asked from the author(s). In this case, the editor-in-chief, together with the other editor(s) and the Editorial Council, shall decide on the procedures to be followed in relation to the manuscript; guaranteeing at all stages, the right of the author(s) of the text to be heard.

In the case of publication of texts which may be accused of any ethical infraction by the community, the question will be analyzed and discussed by the Editorial Council, and the following procedures may be used: 

• Corrections/errata: in the cases of errors or mistakes, irrespective of the nature or origin, which do not configure misconduct. 
• Retractations: in cases of the identification of ethical deviations in public articles based on the identification of a possible problem by the community, by the editorial team of the periodical, or in a manifestation by the author(s) themselves. The case will be analyzed, based on the elements initially presented and identified, always guaranteeing the authors the full right to be heard (all authors shall be notified about any questions that may arise). The result of the analysis may imply the non-modification of the article, total retraction, or partial retraction – depending on the case –, according to what is indicated by Scielo. 
• Practices with injure scientific integrity such as Plagiary, Duplicate Publication, and Redundant Publication, amongst others, can result in the suspension of the authors from publication in the periodical for a determined period by the said Council. Author(s) will immediately be notified of all the stages of this process.

Manuscripts which have more than one author shall, at the moment of submission, include all their names on the “List of Coauthors”.

Only those researcher(s) who participate, even in different proportions, in the stages identified below shall be considered authors: 

• Research, conceptual discussion, and historical analysis; 
• Writing (at least one part of the article);
• Final revision.

All author(s) are equally responsible for and fully agree with the content submitted and/or published.

RBH considers that there can exist other forms of participation in research which can contribute to the paper, as well as the writing of the text. In this case the criteria established by the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) – ABRALIN shall be used. Participants who fit into any of these categories, but who do not have the status of author, should be mentioned and thanked in a footnote at the beginning of the text, according to their contributions.

Public credibility of the periodical also depends on how conflicts of interest are administered during writing, peer review, and decision making by the editors. Conflicts of interest can emerge when author(s), revisor(s) or editor(s) have interests which, whether apparent or not, can influence the production or assessment of manuscripts. These conflicts of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature.

When (an) author(s) submit(s) a manuscript they are responsible for recognizing and revealing conflicts/support of a financial or any other nature which may have influenced their work. Author(s) should acknowledge on the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections in relation to the research. The contributions of those mentioned in the acknowledgements for their assistance should be described and their consent for publication should be documented.

In this sense, the author(s) of the manuscript must declare whether any conflicts of interest exist at the moment of submission, peers must do the same when accepting to assess the content of an article, as well as the Editor(s), before the Editorial Council.

The author(s) hold the copyright for the texts published and are fully responsible for their content. All content published in RBH is distributed in open access under license from Creative Commons (CC-BY) Atribuição 4.0 Internacional.

Authors have permission and are encouraged to deposit published work (though only post-print versions) in institutional repositories, academic social networks (ResearchGate, Academia.edu), and similar places (always offering a detailed indexation of the item).

RBH complies with the Federal Government’s Data Protection Policy. Data provided at the moment of submission will only and exclusively be used for academic purposes and will not be provided to third parties.

The peer review process adopted by RBH is double blind peer review, in which the identities of reviewers and author(s) are hidden from each other during the assessment process. 

However, in compliance with the principles of Open Science, RBH allows the possibility that the assessment can be: 

• Single-blind: when the author(s) authorize(s) at the moment of the submission of their text and at their own free will that their identity be revealed to the peer reviewer, although the latter remains anonymous; 
• open: when the author(s) and peer reviewer(s) allow their identities be revealed to each other.

In the cases of preprints it is not possible to guarantee the anonymity of author(s) and for this reason, assessment can be simple-blind or open. 

All scientific contributions are revised by the editor and by members of the Editorial Board designated for this task, with the following processes:

• Initial Revision: at this stage, each manuscript is assessed for compliance with the norms established by RBH, as well as in relation to verification of similarity. If the manuscript does not comply with the established norms, it is returned to the author(s).
• Assessment Process: manuscripts which pass through the initial revision are sent to at least two independent reviewers, in accordance with their specialization in the particular field.
• Reviews: the peer reviewer(s) submit their review directly to the OJS system. The decision can be “Accept Submission”, “Obligatory Corrections”, “Resubmit for review” or “Reject Submission”. 
• In the case of approval or rejection, the editor(s) designated among the members of the Editorial Council will decide, based on the grounds presented in the peer reviews, on the approval or rejection of the manuscript. In the case of the acceptance, the manuscript will enter the editing process for publication.
• If the decision is “Obligatory Corrections”, the text will be approved only after being revised or the criticisms made by the peer reviewers have been replied to. 
• If the decision is “Resubmit for review”, the manuscript shall be revised and resubmitted, after modification, for peer review.

Articles

We consider articles to be unpublished texts which can be the fruit of original research, literature review, or even opinion. RBH publishes individual articles, dossier articles, and debate articles. 

Both individual articles and those which form dossiers shall be between 7000 and 8500 words long, including notes (limited to 30) and bibliographic references. No articles will be assessed without complying with this rule. 

Texts in Portuguese and Spanish approved for publication will be published in their original versions and translated to English, at the decision of the editor. In the case of texts received in English, Portuguese translations and/or original versions (in the case of unpublished works) will be published, equally at the decision of the editor. Revision and translation costs of these, when not covered by RBH, will be paid for by the author(s).

Dossiers

RBH opens annually a call for dossiers, whose themes can be submitted by the state sections of ANPUH and/or the community in general. The Editorial Council shall decide on the proposals jointly with the editor(s).

After approval, the coordinators of dossiers will accompany, under the guidance of the editor(s), the relevant assessment process. They will be responsible for writing the presentation text/article, within the period agreed with the editor(s), in which a detailed assessment of the dossier’s theme is expected. They are forbidden from participating too in the submission of articles.

Debates

RBH: Debates is a section which has two or three articles derived from a discussion developed by RBH based on previously selected themes. Its objective is to maintain a space for reflection on emerging problems in the public spaces of contemporaneity, which affect, provoke, and challenge the exercise of the profession of History. Its themes and those invited to participate are defined by the Editorial Council together with the editor.

The texts will be between 4000 and 6000 words long, with the Editorial Council being responsible for assessing and approving them.

Reviews

Works to be reviewed can be written in any language and published in any country, once they are related to historiographic debates and their relations with the other fields of knowledge. Texts shall have between 2000 and 4000 words. 

Works reviewed can be new books, films, documentaries, or similar works published and/or originally released within a maximum of four years, both in relation to Brazilian and foreign publications and productions.

All reviews must have a title which indicates to readers the analytical objective of the reviewer, as well as presenting bibliographic references.

RBH will reserve a minimum of one third of published reviews for works related to the theme of each dossier. If there are no such indications from dossier organizers, the published reviews will be those received in a continuous flow and approved by peer reviewers

Interviews

Interviews sent to RBH should contain a brief presentation of the interviewee and be the same size as an article. The Editorial Council is responsible for assessing and approving these.

Manuscripts should be exclusively submitted on the RBH electronic submission system. 

Reference to authorship should be removed from the text, footnotes, and file properties so that there can be no information that can identify it. These can be put in the text at the time of publication. If the author agrees to reveal their identity, this action is unnecessary. 

Articles submitted in Portuguese have to present a title, abstract, and keywords in Portuguese and English. Articles submitted in Spanish have to present a title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish and English. Articles submitted in English have to present a title, abstract, and keywords in Portuguese and English. 

Texts which were approved with revision, should be resubmitted after this revision is completed, using the revision marks option.

All author data must be stated in a precise and obligatory nature on the form when registering on the electronic publishing system, including ORCID.

Citation Norms

Complete bibliographic references should be listed in alphabetic order at the end of the contributions, in accordance with the model below. When cited in the text, the work should be indicated in a simplified manner, both in the body of the article and the note itself, in the following format (Author, year, page). E.g., (Holanda, 1936, p. 79). Only works actually cited in the text should appear in the references.
