Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política is published by the Institute of Political Science and the Graduate Program in Political Science of the University of Brasília.

The journal was created in 2009. The journal was initially published twice a year and now publishes three issues a year since 2012. The Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política seeks to publish original scientific research on politics and political phenomena from varying theoretical and methodological perspectives. The journal is particularly interested in publishing methodologically rigorous work.

The Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política publishes original articles related to politics from varying theoretical and methodological perspectives. The journal is particularly interested in publishing methodologically rigorous research and  original theoretical contributions. It seeks to represent the diversity of theoretical debates and methodological practices within contemporary Political Science and is especially interested in academic work that bridges boundaries within the discipline

The journal publishes three issues a year (January – April; May -August; September - December)

Articles submitted to the Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política are evaluated according to their relevance for the field of political science, the extent to which they are innovative, methodologically rigorous and clearly written. The journal accepts article submissions in Portuguese, Spanish and English, to be published in their original language. Authors are responsible for the translation and copyediting of articles in English or Spanish. The Editors-in-Chief reserve the right to reject for publication submissions whose final versions have not been adequately revised.

Articles must be original and should not be under review at any other journal.

The journal encourages publications from researchers engaged in advanced doctoral studies or who have completed doctoral degrees and requires that at least one author have a masters’ degree or equivalent.

The Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política also publishes in three languages reviews of books published in the last 36 months. Book reviews are evaluated by the editorial committee based on two criteria: (i) the book review falls within the scope of interest of the journal; and (ii) is judged relevant to the discipline of political science. The book review editor is free to request external peer evaluations if desired.

Peer Review 

The Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política adopts a double-blind review process for articles that are submitted to peer review after initial evaluation by the Editors. Articles are only submitted to peer review after desk review by a member of the Editorial Board. Once approved in the desk review stage, all editorial decisions require at least two peer evaluations.

At each stage of the peer review process, articles and book reviews can receive one of the following decisions: “accepted for publication”, “invited to be revised and resubmitted with changes”, or “rejected.” When rejected, articles and book reviews cannot be resubmitted. The journal only publishes articles that are positively evaluated by at least two qualified researchers with doctoral degrees and by the Editors-in-Chief.

Access to the Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política and its content is free of charge and open.

This journal uses the LOCKSS system to distribute and make available its content to participating databases and libraries and to allow preservation and restoration of its content. To read more...

The Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política is committed to the norms defined by the Committee for Integrity in Scientific Activity of Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (Comissão de Integridade na Atividade Científica do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico – CNPq, and also follows the ethics guidelines published by  the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE. We recommend that authors and referees consult these sources before submitting articles or reviews. 

The Editorial Board also struggles against any form of discrimination against authors, editors, and reviewers based on personal characteristics or identity. We actively encourage submissions by scholars from diverse backgrounds. 

We are committed to permanently safeguarding the correctness and quality of data and will clarify, retract and correct any errors by authors or that result from the editing process. The editors work to prevent inappropriate and anti-ethical behavior in the publication of articles, with special attention to preventing plagiarism, citation manipulation and data falsification. In the event that the Editors are made aware ethical misconduct, they will promptly deal with the allegations according to COPE’s Retraction guidelines, guaranteeing that the author of the text in question has the opportunity to present his/her/their position about the issue. Upon determination of misconduct, the Journal with promptly publish a correction or expression of concern, and, when appropriate, apologies. 

1. Author responsibilities:

Submitting the same research to more than one journal is expressly prohibited. When authors submit their articles, they must declare that the content is original, that it has not been published or submitted to any other publication, in any language.

All coauthors must have participated directly in the research or elaboration of the text.

It is author’s responsibility to guarantee the authenticity of all information and data presented.

All articles and book reviews must contain a list of references. Sources must be clearly referenced in the text and in the bibliography.

In the case of quantitative research, data and scripts for replication must be provided upon acceptance of the submission for publication. These data will be published in the journal’s page on the Harvard Dataverse. See “Form and preparation of manuscripts”, below.

Once accepted for publications, the institutions and research projects within which the research has taken place, as well as sources of financial support should be identified in the final version of the text.

It is author’s responsibility to inform the editors if they discover mistakes, incorrect data or misleading information. When submitting the article, they agree to inform and correct any mistakes.

Authors are obliged to work as reviewers for other articles in their subfield of knowledge.

After publication in the journal, authors must wait for at least one year before submitting a new article.

2. Peer review and reviewer responsibilities:

Reviewers will receive clear guidelines along with the article to be reviewed, indicating the topics to be evaluated and quality expectations.

Reviews are expected to evaluate the following characteristics of the submission: relevance, correctness, originality,  timeliness of discussions and references, adequacy to the field of knowledge, methodological rigor, clarity of writing and argumentation. Reviewers are asked to identify existing published work which is not cited in the submission.

When accepting to review an article, reviewers will be asked to state that they have no conflict of interests with respect to authors and research. Reviews are strictly confidential.

3. Editorial responsibilities:

The Editors-in-Chief and Associated Editors analyze all articles received and are responsible for rejecting or accepting articles, based on peer reviews.

The Editors-in-Chief and Associated Editors are responsible for selecting reviewers appropriately, considering the themes of the articles and the production and respectability of academics considered as referees.

The Editors-in-Chief and Associated Editors are responsible for guaranteeing agreed upon quality standards.

The Editors-in-Chief and Associated Editors are responsible for preventing mal-practices and anti-ethical behavior, plagiarism and fraudulent data.

The Editors-in-Chief and Associated Editors are responsible for correcting eventual mistakes, publishing corrections or retractions.

The Editors-in-Chief and Associated Editors are responsible for preserving permanently the anonymity of reviewers as well as the anonymity of the authors of articles under review.

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

• Authors retain copyright and grant the journal rights to first the publication with the work simultaneously licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License that allows sharing the work with recognition of its initial publication in this journal.
• Authors are able to take on additional contracts for non-exclusive distribution of the version of the paper published in this journal (e.g.: publication in an institutional repository or as a book), with an acknowledgment of its initial publication in this journal.
• Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (eg .: in institutional repositories or on their website) at any point before or during the editorial process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as increase the impact and the citation of published work (see the effect of open access and downloads on citation impact, see O Efeito do Acesso Livre).

In order to guarantee anonymity in the reviewing process any reference enabling the identification of author should be eliminated from the text. This includes references to prior presentation of the text in conferences. Submissions should NOT include a cover page. Identification should also be removed from the properties of the document.

Length and Format of Articles

Articles should be written in Times New Roman, size 12, spacing 1,5 and cannot have more than 10,000 words, including tables, boxes, figures and references.
Articles must contain:

a) Abstracts in Portuguese and in English (no more than 10 lines each), summarizing the main topic, hypothesis, methodology and conclusions; The abstracts should be located at the end of the article.

b) 4 to 6 keywords in Portuguese and in English, identifying the main topics discussed in the article.

BOOK REVIEWS will be considered for books published in the last 36 months. They should have at most 2500 words, in Times New Roman, size 12, space 1,5, without abstract.

Databases for Replication

Once an article based on quantitative data is approved, the author(s) will be asked to provide the database used in analysis, the dictionary describing variables and replication codes or other necessary explanations of steps taken in analysis, so is to allow for replication.

If the data base belongs to a third party, a link can be provided to the original files.

The data should be made available in a format that can be easily accessed by conventional statistical software such as R, Stata, SPSS and Excel.

Microdata referring to human subjects should be completely anonymized, in order to protect the confidentiality of the information.

The dictionary of codes should indicate the variable names, description and source.

When applicable, replication code should be extensively commented.

If the article did not use statistical software permitting the creation of replication code, the author should describe the step-by-step procedures used, so that replication is possible.

In articles based on surveys, the questionnaire should also be supplied.

The databases, codes and other information will be made available on the journal’s page in the Dataverse Portal.

References

Bibliographic references must follow the norms of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT, NBR-6023/2018).  In the body of the text, they should be identified in parentheses according to the following model:

Last name in all caps, year of the article/book, pages. Examples: (REIS, 1989) or (REIS, 1989, p. 64). Different titles from the same author, if published in the same year, must be identified with a letter after the year. Ex.: (Diniz DINIZ, 2003a), (DINIZ, 2003b).

In the case of more than one author, authors should be separated by a semi-colon. Ex.: REIS; DINIZ).

Manuscripts should be submitted through the online platform SciELO, in either “.doc” or “.docx” format. Maps, figures and tables must be sent within the text. Images and/or figures must be in jpeg, 300 dpi. When needed, copyright must be provided by the author.

At the end of the article, bibliographic references should be listed in alphabetical:

Book: LAST NAME, First name. Title in bold: subtitle. Edition number (when not the first edition). Place: publisher and date of publication.

Manuscripts that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered for review.
