About the journal

Basic Information

For more than three decades, the Revista Brasileira de Ciências do Esporte (RBCE) (Brazilian Journal of Sport Sciences), published by the CBCE – Colégio Brasileiro de Ciências do Esporte (Brazilian College of Sport Sciences), has been contributing with the task of promoting, but also of intervening, in the production of knowledge in Physical Education/Sports Sciences. Throughout its publication history, the RBCE has been recording the history of Physical Education in Brazil, seen from different perspectives and concepts, from different approaches, themes, objects, and problematics.

Since the RBCE was launched in September 1979, and in the ten following years, the journal privileged the publication of original articles, chronicles, news, congress annals, courses, reports on experiences, interviews, letters from readers, reviews of books, abstracts of theses and dissertations, while also focusing on themes such as human motricity, sports management, adapted physical education and works that refer to the ten years of the CBCE. Volume 12, which united numbers 1, 2, and 3 and was published in 1992, was the journal's first thematic edition, focusing on leisure. In the 1990s, the thematic editions were maintained and the themes were determined from demands by members, State Secretaries, and also considering events organized by the CBCE. The Teaching of Physical Education, motor learning, curriculum, gender issues, teaching methodology, evaluation, sports, communication and media, leisure and environment, conferences and texts presented at the Congresso Brasileiro de Ciências do Esporte (Brazilian Congress of Sports Sciences) guided the decade's thematic editions.

Vol. 30, no. 1 (Sept/2008) of the RBCE marks a suspension of the thematic orientation that had been governing the journal's editorial dynamics, an important shift in the induced demand for works in Physical Education/Sports Sciences. This change favors the movement in the area, which has become stronger through the creation of new graduate studies programs and growth in the promotion of scientific knowledge through the publication of articles with distinct focuses and stemming from studies in different lines of research. Starting in September 2008, on its twenty-ninth anniversary, and while celebrating the CBCE's thirtieth anniversary, the RBCE gains its digital version. It favors an expansion of the dissemination, of the transfer of scientific information, and an exchange with national and international entities, students, and professionals tied to Physical Education/Sports Sciences and other interested parties.

The RBCE's geographical scope includes the entire country as well as other countries of Latin America and Europe. CBCE members are spread about the most diverse regions of the country and in countless teaching and research institutions, as well as members who are in countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, United States, Canada , France, Portugal, Germany, and Spain. This indicator demonstrates the high position the country and the RBCE occupy in the international scenario, which has been establishing itself within the ambit of Sports Sciences/Physical Education.

Among the characteristics of the target public, and evident predomination of well-established researchers (senior PhDs) or those in the process of establishing themselves (young PhDs, PhD candidates, Masters candidates, and graduate studies students who are beginning in research) stands out. We thus reach undergraduate students, strictu sensu and latu sensu graduate students in Physical Education and similar areas, national and international researchers, national and international libraries, national and international journals interested in the exchange of knowledge.

RBCE is a continuous publication and open access journal; all articles can be accessed and downloaded by anyone, free of any fees or charges.

Instructions to authors

Scope and policy

The Brazilian Journal of Sports Sciences (RBCE, eISSN 2179-3255), is a journal of the Brazilian College of Sports Sciences (CBCE), edited and maintained by the Graduate Program in Physical Education of the University of Brasilia (UnB) in partnership with SciELO Brazil and Editora Cubo.  It presents original investigations on current and relevant topics from profound theoretical reflection and/or rigorous empirical research. In addition, the RBCE publishes comprehensive reviews on current topics in Physical Education/Sports Sciences, which reflect the significant theoretical, methodological, disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and geographical diversity of the area.

Articles from the Biodynamics subarea must be submitted in English. Articles of the Sociocultural and Pedagogical subareas can be submitted in Portuguese, English or Spanish.

Articles that comply with the instructions to the authors will be submitted to the Editorial Committee or ad hoc reviewers. The RBCE adopts a peer-review policy, ensuring the quality of evaluation through a body of specialized reviewers, and a double-blind system, ensuring the anonymity and integrity of the evaluation since reviewers do not have access to the identity of the authors. Authors may suggest reviewers to evaluate their work and may indicate those they would not like. The Editors-in-Chief evaluate the merit of the work and forward it to the reviewers. Accepted articles, or accepted with an indication of reformulation, may return to the authors for approval of any changes in the publishing process.

The publication of articles in the RBCE, after approval, occurs through the association of the author(s) in the CBCE or, then, for payment of publication fee. The publication fee currently corresponds to the amount of US$ 100,00 to be paid at the time of the entry of the article in the publishing phase, after approval. When the author (s) are associated with CBCE will be exempt from any fee. In articles with more than one author, is only valid if all authors are members of CBCE, with the payment on day.

The following is a scheme of the editorial flow of RBCE, presenting the main processes involving the work of the Editorial Team.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

The RBCE follows the editorial practices that encourage the recommendations of ethics in research, such as the Guide to good practices for strengthening ethics in scientific publication (SCIELO). RBCE has the following sections:

a) Original articles: articles communicating original empirical and/or theoretical research results on relevant and unpublished topics, presenting, preferably, the following fundamental sections – or variations, according to the exposition of the object and research results: introduction; methodological design; results and discussion; conclusions; references. Submissions in this section can be made at any time, in a continuous demand system.

b) Review articles: state-of-the-art summary or review article, that is, articles with the objective of synthesizing and/or evaluating already published scientific works, establishing a temporal, thematic, disciplinary and/or geographic cut for analysis of the consulted literature. This section is exclusively for induced demand, that is, the Editorial Board will invite authors to submit their articles. Articles improperly directed to this section will be archived.

c) Essays: theoretical-conceptual reflection produced from the author's experience to support a certain position that aims to deepen or problematize relevant discussions for the area, presenting new contributions without necessarily being based on review or empirical production. This section is exclusively for induced demand, that is, the Editorial Board will invite authors to submit their articles. Articles improperly directed to this section will be archived.

d) Dossier: articles and essays submitted from induced demand and public call, which RBCE proposes to mobilize the scientific community of the area, from the scheduling of debates around emerging themes in the national scenario. This section is exclusively for induced demand, that is, the Editorial Board will invite authors to submit their articles. Articles improperly directed to this section will be archived.

e) Panel: articles and essays submitted from induced demand, proposed by consolidated research groups in dialogue with groups linked to foreign institutions, which is dedicated to the scientific agenda of debates around emerging themes in the international scenario. This section is exclusively for induced demand, that is, the Editorial Board will invite authors to submit their articles. Articles improperly directed to this section will be archived.

f) Interview: interviews induced by RBCE by invitation dedicated to provoking dialogue between leading researchers on important topics or development trends in the area. This section is exclusively for induced demand, that is, the Editorial Board will invite authors to submit their articles. Articles improperly directed to this section will be archived.

g) Editorial: introductory text of the journal expressing opinions, comments and/or positions written by members of the editorial team about the development of the area and the RBCE. This section is exclusively for induced demand, that is, the Editorial Board will invite authors to submit their articles. Articles improperly directed to this section will be archived.

With the intent of strengthening and expanding the frontiers of research in Physical Education/Sports Sciences in Brazil and abroad, RBCE's editorial policy seeks to stimulate the publication of innovative articles that mirror the great diversity and theoretical, methodological, disciplinary, interdisciplinary and geographic variety of the national and international research in this field.

The following files comprise the submission:

1. Authors’ term of agreement;
2. Cover Sheet;
3. Article;
4. Ethics Committee statement, if applicable;
5. Individual files for figures, and videos.

1. Authors’ term of the agreement: It is a letter that must be signed by all authors, authorizing the publication of the article and stating that it is unpublished and that it was not/ is not being considered for publication by another journal. RBCE advises that only those who have actually participated in the central stages of the research should be listed as authors; for example, it is not enough to have revised the text or simply collected the data. All those listed as authors at the time of submission of the article to RBCE automatically declare responsibility following the models below (items 1.1 and 1.2). These items should be grouped into a letter (copy both items and paste into a single PDF file), which should be uploaded into the system at the time of submission.

1.1. Declaration of Responsibility: “I certify that I participated sufficiently in the work to publicly accept responsibility for its content. I certify that the article is an original work and that neither this article, in part or in full, nor other work with substantially similar content of my own, has been published or is being considered for publication in another journal, whether in print or electronic form. I certify that, if requested, I will provide or cooperate fully in obtaining and providing the data on which the article is based for the editors’ examination.”

1.2. Copyright Transfer: “I declare that, if the article is accepted by the Brazilian Journal of Sports Sciences (RBCE), I agree that its copyrights shall become the exclusive property of the Brazilian College of Sports Sciences (CBCE), being forbidden any reproduction, total or partial, in any other part or means of disclosure, printed or electronic, without prior and necessary authorization; if said authorization is granted, the due acknowledgments to the CBCE and the credits to RBCE shall be stated.”

1.3. Supplementary Information: In manuscripts with 4 (four) or more authors, it is necessary to specify, in the Authors' term of the agreement the individual responsibilities of all authors in its preparation following the model below: "Author X was responsible for…; Author Y was responsible for…; Author Z was responsible for…, etc." It should also be paid attention to the completion of the form available in step 04 in the submission system, Provide CRediT Contribution, which allows you to assign 14 different roles or functions performed by the co-authors  of the articles. For more information, it is suggested to access the page available in this link.

2. Cover Sheet: This document should only contain:
