Physis publishes articles in the following categories:
Original unsolicited articles (up to 7,000 words, including notes and references): unpublished papers resulting from research or theoretical discussion. Merely descriptive articles that do not present a theoretical-conceptual analysis of the data will not be accepted. Essay-type articles that bring relevant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the area will be accepted. Publication is decided by the editor-in-chief together with the associate editors. based on anonymous assessment of reviewers - double-blind peer review - and according to space availability.
Review articles (up to 8,000 words) into the following types:
Systematic review and meta-analysis whose purpose is to answer a specific and clearly formulated question, and whose methods ensure a comprehensive and unbiased synthesis of the available literature. Statistical methods (meta-analysis) may or may not be used to analyze and summarize the results of the studies included. The manuscript must present the entire search process of the original studies, the selection criteria used and the procedures adopted in the selection, analysis and synthesis of the results. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses reports must follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist, available at <https://prisma-statement.org/>, and must be accompanied by a flowchart that summarizes the flow of information through the different phases. It is also suggested that reviews have their protocol registered and published in a review registration database, such as PROSPERO (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/>) or Open Science Framework - OSF (https://osf.io/).
Scope review whose purpose is to answer broader research questions and help identify and clarify concepts and definitions within a field, allowing mapping or discussion of characteristics and providing an indication of the volume of literature and studies available, as well as an overview of their focus. It tends to focus on the nature, number and characteristics of the studies and not necessarily on the synthesis of the findings. All methodological paths followed must be clearly laid out, suggesting that the methodology rules provided by the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis (<https://doi.org/10.46658/JBIMES-20-01>) be examined.
Narrative review whose proposal is to present critical analyzes and discussion of topics of interest in the field of public health, in a broader approach. It should clearly present the review’s objectives, the guiding questions and the process of identifying the texts included in the discussion, but it does not require a rigid execution protocol, nor the exhaustion of information sources. Studies selection and information interpretation may be subject to the subjectivity of the authors. In any case, the text must clearly present the arguments listed in the review and the critical analysis of the theme based on the proposed objectives.
Reviews (up to 4,000 words, including notes and references): Physis welcomes unsolicited reviews and invites authors to send them as well. The Editorial Board will decide on the publication, considering the theme, quality of manuscript and space availability. Reviews will only be accepted with a single author.
Interviews (up to 4,000 words, including notes and references): this section welcomes testimonies of people whose life stories or professional achievements are relevant to the journal's scope.
Letters to the editor (up to 1,800 words, including notes and references) which may consist of: comments on articles published in the journal; comments on relevant topics in Collective Health; prior communication about ongoing research.
Original articles by invitation composing a Dossier (up to 7,000 words for each article, including notes and references): Unpublished texts compiled by a guest editor with recognized experience on a Collective Health theme composing a dossier. The Editorial Board and the guest editor must deliberate on the publication of articles received based on opinions (double-blind peer review), and each author can only appear in a single article per issue. A maximum of 3 dossiers may be published per year.
Debates: Texts proposed by the editors or collaborators on a Collective Health theme, obeying the following configuration: an opening text that presents a discussion on the proposed theme (up to 6,000 words, including notes and references); up to 3 texts by invited panelists (up to 1,800 words each, including notes and references) and a reply from the first author (up to 1,800 words, including notes and references). (The journal's editors will be in charge of evaluating the texts, requesting modifications, when applicable, and deciding on their publication). A maximum of 2 debates per year will be published.
Guidelines for presentation of articles and manuscripts:
1. The submission process is online only, through ScholarOne Manuscripts system at http://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/physis-scielo. To submit originals, authors must register in the system, and once logged in, access the "Author Center" and start the submission process. All authors of articles approved for publication must necessarily associate their ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID, https://orcid.org/) with their ScholarOne profile and inform the number in the Declaration of Responsibility (see model below).
2. Although Physis is sponsored by a public institution, the amount currently allocated to the journal is not sufficient to maintain it. Thus, from January 1, 2020, a publication fee will be charged to ensure the continuity of the journal. The amount of this fee is R$ 600.00 (six hundred reais) per approved article, ie, in submission the author will not pay the fee, only if the article is accepted for publication. The value for publication of texts in the other sections of Physis will be R$ 200.00 (two hundred reais). Authors will be provided with receipt of payment of the fee. After approval of the article, the authors will be informed, by email, on how to proceed with the payment of the fee. Duly justified requests for non-payment of the publication fee should be sent to the journal’s editors, who will review them.
3. Texts must be typewritten in Word or RTF, using font Arial or Times New Roman size 12, according to the number of words established for each section (comprising text, notes and references); abstracts are considered separately. Articles should not bring any information about authorship. Information about authors must be provided in specific fields of submission form and in the declaration of authorship (item 11, below).
4. Papers presenting the results of research involving human beings must contain a clear statement of compliance with ethical principles, according to the Helsinki Declaration and the Brazilian legislation issued by the Research Ethics National Committee, Ministry of Health. Authors should indicate whether the research work has been sponsored, is based on a Master's or Doctorate thesis, and must as well disclosure any potential conflict of interest. Information on financial support should appear on the item "Acknowledgements", in the end of the manuscript or as endnote.
5. Physis encourages the deposit of manuscripts on preprint platforms. In case the deposit occurs, it is necessary that the authors notify the editors using the "Cover Letter" field, inserting the link (URL) and the DOI number of the manuscript accepted by the preprint platform. With regard to articles that have already been disclosed as preprints, the evaluation will take place in a simple blind manner, considering that it will be possible to consult the names of the authors of the text.
6. Physis welcomes articles written in Portuguese (preferably), English and Spanish. The Editorial Board may make changes in the texts, following the standards of the journal, however preserving style and content. Eventually, translated articles already published in another language, which by their relevance may merit greater disclosure in Portuguese, will be accepted. Authors are responsible for all concepts and information presented in the manuscripts, which may not necessarily reflect the views of the Editors and Editorial Board.
7. The abstract and keywords in Portuguese should be included in the indicated steps of the submission process. Abstract and key words in English must be included in the body of the article, after the references (in the sections of original articles and theme only). Abstracts must contain up to 200 words, and highlight the main objective, the basic methods adopted, the most relevant results and main conclusions of the article. Should be included 3-5 keywords in Portuguese and English. The full title of the article must also be translated. The Editors may revise or remake the translations.
8. Images, figures or drawings must be in tiff or jpeg format, with a minimum resolution of 200 dpi, with caption and font Arial or Times New Roman 10. Tables must be produced in Word. All illustrations must be inserted in the body of the article, but those produced in non-Word format should be sent in separate files as well, and will be inserted in the system as "image" or "figure", with their subtitles and numbering.
9. Endnotes must be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, after the references, with size 10 font. As succinctly as possible, endnotes must be exclusively explanatory. There is no limitation to the number of endnotes.
10. References should be cited and organized following ABNT style (NBR 6023: 2018). In the text, cite the author's last name and year of publication, followed by page number in citations. All cited references should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. Authors are responsible for the exactness of the references and their correct citation. In the case of using some reference management software (eg EndNote), the author(s) must convert the references to text.
11. Given the growth in the number of co-authors in many articles referred to Physis, the maximum number of authors is limited to four, and only with exceptional justification a larger number will be accepted. Moreover, the effective contribution of each author will be rigorously evaluated. The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject articles whose authors do not provide satisfactory explanations about this item, and/or request the removal of participants without substantial contribution. The individual responsibilities of all authors in the preparation of the article should be indicated in the "Statement of responsibility" (see model below), according to the criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which determines that the recognition of authorship must be based on a substantial contribution related to: (1) Conception and design or analysis and interpretation of data; (2) Writing of the article or relevant critical review of the intellectual content; (3) Final approval of the version to be published; (4) Be responsible for all aspects of the work in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of any part of the work. This statement must also be signed by all authors, scanned and sent as a supplementary document during the submission process. An item of "Acknowledgements" may be included in the end of the manuscript or as endnote to quote institutions that somehow enabled the research and / or people who collaborated with the study but did not meet the criteria for co-authoring. The addition of authors after submission will not be accepted, and the removal of any of the names indicated as author may only be made if directly determined by the editor due to non-compliance with the criteria for attribution of authorship.
12. Works published on Physis are registered under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Brazil license (CC-BY 3.0 BR). The declaration of responsibility (see model below) must be signed by all authors, digitized and entered in the system as "supplemental file not for review", so that the evaluators do not identify the author(s) of article. Any other comments or remarks sent to editors should be entered in the "Cover letter" field.
13. In compliance with SciELO's guidelines, identification of author's affiliation should be restricted to the names of institutional entities, city, state and country. E-mail may be informed. The names and email addresses will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication and are not available for other purposes or to third parties.
14. Papers which do not comply with these guidelines will not be published, even if they have been approved on merit by the reviewers. The Editors reserve the right to ask authors to suit the articles to the standards above, or even withhold their publication. Any other observation should come in the field "Cover letter".
15. If an article is already accepted for publication, it may be also published in English or Spanish as well, if this is the author's interest. However, the translation should be done by a qualified company (or one recommended by the editors of Physis), and translation costs shall be borne by the author. The Portuguese and / or Spanish or English versions of each article may only be published in the same volume and issue of the Journal and will be identified with the same DOI.
16. Authors are responsible for all concepts and information presented in the papers and reviews.
17. The Editorial Board will decide on how to proceed for particular cases.
