About the journal

Basic information

The Journal ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE - OH (Revista Brasileira de Horticultura Ornamental) is an official publication of the Brazilian Society for Floriculture and Ornamental Plants (Sociedade Brasileira de Floricultura e Plantas Ornamentais) - SBFPO.

Aims and Interess areas

This Journal aim to publish technical and scientific researches in floriculture, ornamental plants, landscaping and landscapes from members of this Society and others.

History

The "Brazilian Journal of Ornamental Horticulture" was created by the Brazilian Society of Ornamental Horticulture in 1995 with the purpose of disseminating the scientific and technical works developed by the members, as well as other researchers, establishing a strong connection between research and productive sector. The first Editor-in-chief was Dr. Taís Tostes Graziano (1195 - 2003); in the sequence was led by Dr. Antônio Fernando Tombolato (2004-2010), who in 2005, in an innovative action, adopted the online submission and processing of the works and in parallel the journal was published on CD (2005-2014). In 2011, Dr. Gláucia Moraes Dias took over the Editor-in-chief, and in 2014 the journal changed its name to "ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE" in order to increase its insertion and make a scientific publication of worldwide scope. Since its inception, the publication has been uninterrupted. Initially, the publication was made in two annual numbers (1995- 2014), going from the four-monthly period from 2015 to 2016 and quarterly from 2017. The articles could initially be published in Portuguese, Spanish or English, and since 2017, only articles in English are published. The changes over the years reflect not only a need to adapt to the technical and scientific requirements of publications of this kind, but also the seriousness shown by the work of a group prepared to solidify this magazine, whose specificity is unique in our country. Therefore, we hope Ornamental Horticulture (OH) will continue to contribute to the development of Ornamental Horticulture and Landscaping, transforming itself whenever necessary, while maintaining the same scientific seriousness that has characterized it since its inception.

Frequency

ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE - OH is published in four annual issues, being one of which published as a special issue. The special issue has a theme defined each year, as a way to stimulate and broaden the dissemination of research developed based on this theme defined by the Editorial Board. For the Special Issue, all articles must be submitted using the Submission system and will undergo the peer review process, similarly to articles ordinarily submitted to OH.

Other information

All articles must be submitted by the Submission System and will go through the peer review process including the articles that will compose the special issue.

The manuscripts can be submitted in Portuguese, but publication must be in English language (U.S.). All the manuscripts submitted to ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE (Revista Brasileira de Horticultura Ornamental) - OH must not have been submitted or published at the same time, partial or totally, to other journal.

It is allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to parts or the full texts to use them for any other lawful purpose. The reproduction of articles published in this journal is authorized, under the condition that the source is acknowledged.

The abbreviated title of the journal is ORNAM. HORTIC., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic legends.

Instructions to authors

Scope and policy

Scope:

This Journal aim to publish technical and scientific researches in floriculture, ornamental plants, landscaping and landscapes. Include in landscaping are urban green areas and urban afforestation.

Types of Articles:

In terms of content, works may be presented in the form of: Scientific article, Technical Article, Review Article and Articles describing varieties and/or cultivars. Also, for each number, it is published Editorial, being possible to publish Obituary and Book Review.

Editorial Policies

ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE is coordinated by the Editor-in-Chief, who is directly assisted by the Associate and Assistant editors. Also, for each thematic area, there are “Area Editors”, that coordinate the proceeding of articles in their areas of knowledge. The entire process of proceeding and publication is online through a submission system and the evaluation is done by qualified professionals in double blind review system. The journal has guidelines to the authors, which are fundamental for the standardization and quality of publications.

Peer review process

The received manuscript is first analyzed by the Editor-in-chief, and checked by its scope (areas of publication) and if is according to the Guidelines.

After that, it is designated to the Area Editor that, after being checked, it is indicated to at least 2 (two) ad docs selected from among those registered in the submission system of the journal. Using a form, the ad docs verify the text, write suggestions that are forwarded to the authors through the Area Editor or Editor-in-chief. Also, they may suggest the approval or rejection of the manuscript. If approved, the analysis process can be repeated several times until the text is approved. For each stage a maximum period of 30 (thirty) days is established so that the final publication time is as short as possible.

The journal uses the “double blind review” process to evaluate the papers. All the manuscripts have stealthy and impartial character, and the authors as well as the ad hoc Committee do not get personal information by itself.

The text only can be published after the approval of the Ad Docs, Area Editor, Editor-in-chief and the authors. After approval, the text is directed to Editing, and it is reviewed by the Layout Editor and Associate Editor, verifying the conformity to the journal’s guidelines.

After been editing, the text returns to the authors for final approval and only after the formal statement of the corresponding author, the paper is published.

Readers

The journal articles are intended for professionals (teachers, researchers), technicians, students and others interested in the thematic areas of article publication.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Types of articles

In terms of content, works may be presented in the form of:

  • Scientific article
An article reporting an original study, related to research results, submitted to the Editorial Committee. The format must follow the journal’s standards for Article Preparation.
    Technical Article
An article containing technical information, usually not based on research. It may present instructions on the use of techniques for a certain purpose and case studies. The format is free, but should be similar to the structure used for scientific articles, containing a Title, Abstract in English and Portuguese, Keywords in English and Portuguese, and References.

An announcement reporting the registration or release of new varieties and/or cultivars. It terms of format, it should include the following: Abstract and Keywords in English and Portuguese, Introduction (optional), Origin, Morphological description, Adaptability (climate tolerance, regional tolerance, pest tolerance), Growing conditions (soil, growth rate, sunshine/shade tolerance), Performance (productivity data and comparison with commercial cultivars), Propagation, Uses, Availability (if protected, registered and addresses of laboratories and/or nursery suppliers), and References.

Article preparation

a. Articles should begin with the title of the work. Full name and postal address of the authors’ place of work, should be inserted as metadata in the word processing program.

b. Structure

  • The structure of scientific articles is comprised of Title, Abstract, and Keywords in both English and Portuguese. Must contain: 1. Introduction; 2. Material and Methods; 3. Results and Discussion (may be separated); 4. Conclusion(s); Author Contribution, Acknowledgments; References.
  • Articles written in English must contain Title, Abstract, and Keywords in both English and Portuguese.

Notes

  • Title: must be concise and present the article general idea. We recommend not using scientific nomenclature in the title. Exceptions are made for species that do not have an established common name.
  • Authors: the authors’ names should be presented after the title, continuously and centered. They should be written in full, with only the initials capitalized. After each name, use a number to signal their address in a footnote. In the footnote, the authors must be identified by numbers, indicating: Institution//Department//City-State//Country. Following the name of a corresponding author, “Corresponding author” must be written, along with his/her e-mail address.
  • English Abstract: Must present, in a single paragraph, the following parts: introduction, objective, methodology, results, and conclusion. Articles published in English must also present the abstract in Portuguese.

  • Results and Discussion: May be presented together or separately.
  • Conclusion(s): May appear in text or bullets. In this case, use hyphens.
  • Author contribution: Cite the author using the initials and inform the contribution of each one.
  • Acknowledgments: Mention the source of the work’s funding, or particular acknowledgments, if applicable.
  • References: see Item g.

c. Figures e Tables

  • Figures and Tables should be used only to illustrate specific points or to record data, and should be numbered consecutively, but separately. The location of tables and figures in the text should be given in parentheses, for example (Table X).
