About the journal

Basic information

The Brazilian seed program has started in the 60s with the increasing production of wheat seeds. However, soon after its beginning some barriers were detected on its development; and to overcome those barriers, the government has prepared a project financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), called AGIPLAN (Governmental Action for Implantation of the National Plan of Seeds). The plan has had a strong subproject on personnel capacitation at different academic levels, including Master and Doctoral degrees. The project lasted until 1976, and has granted graduation scholarships to over 100 professionals at both Master and Doctoral degree levels, who soon began producing technical-scientific results; however, without a specific Journal to publicize their work. Thus, starting from 1979, the Brazilian Journal of Seeds (RBS - from its acronym in Portuguese - Revista Brasileira de Sementes) was founded by the Brazilian Association of Seed Technology (ABRATES – Associação Brasileira de Tecnologia de Sementes) to meet this strong and important demand.

Journal of Seed Science (JSS) is an official publication of the Associação Brasileira de Tecnologia de Sementes (ABRATES) and is intended to disseminate original scientific works on Science, Seed Technology, and related areas.

JSS is published in digital format, where the continuous flow publication system is adopted, which consists of publishing articles as soon as they have been evaluated and approved by the reviewers. This model has as its main characteristic the agility in the publication of articles. JSS Editorial Committee is composed of Associate Editors and a board of Scientific Advisors, formed by scientists working in Seed Science and Technology. Articles are directed to an Associate Editor who forwards them to one or two reviewers. Always remaining serious and committed to science and research in the field of seeds.

The abbreviated title of the journal is J. Seed Sci., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.

Instructions to authors

1. SCOPE AND POLICY

The Journal of Seed Science (JSS) is an open access magazine which circulates only online version since 2017.

It aims publish original articles in thematic areas relevant to seed science and technology and that bring a significant contribution to the knowledge of the area.

Original scientific studies and communications not yet published or submitted to another journal are accepted for publication can be submitted. The scientific note is a category of scientific manuscript which describes a technique, an equipment or observations and surveys of limited results and not definitive on a certain subject, whose publication is justified by its uniqueness and contribution to the area.

The editorial board may invite leading authors of recognized reputation to compose specific review articles about relevant and current themes.

The articles are published in order of approval and relevance. Immediately after submission, an evaluation of the manuscript by Ithenticate software for identification of plagiarism will be made. The manuscripts may be organized following this order: Short title (in English), Title (in English), Authors, Abstract (up to 200 words), Index terms (maximum of five, which are not in the title), Resumo (up to 200 words), Termos para indexação, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results and Discussion (can be presented in a single section or in separate sections), Conclusions, Acknowledgements (optional) and References.

The manuscripts may be typed in Word text editor (DOC or RTF), in numbered pages and lines (up to 30 lines per page), with double spacing and 2 cm margins (A4 paper). The Calibri font may be used, fourteen for the title and twelve for the text, and the tables and figures may be annexed at the end of the paper. The figures may be editable in Windows’ compatible programs, in PNG, TIFF or JPEG format, with 300 DPI resolution.

The manuscript may not be longer than 20 (twenty) pages, including figures, tables and references. Review articles will only be published by invitation.

The full name(s) of the author(s) and the ORCID codes may be mentioned immediately below the title. The corresponding author may be identified by an asterisk, and an e-mail may be provided. The notes may be placed on the foot of the page, which has the respective superscripted number of each author indicating his/her institutional affiliation and address, mentioning department or section, institution, post office box, zip code, municipality and country, in addition to the corresponding author e-mail.

Authors quotations in the text: they are made by the surname with only the first letter as a capital, followed by the year of publication. In case of two authors, both surnames may be included, separated by “and”; if there are more than two authors, only the first may be cited, followed by “et al.”. In case of quotations of two or more publications of the same author(s), published in the same year, they may be identified by small letters (a, b, c etc.), placed immediately after the publication year.

References: sixty percent (60%) of the references may have been listed on the database ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus or SciELO during the last ten years. Quotations from theses, dissertations, monographs, proceedings or annals of congress, abstracts and magazines are not accepted.
